Exciting times for newly publicly listed St. Louis companies:
  • Benson Hill (BHIL) - started trading September 30.
  • Nerdy (NRDY) - started trading Sept 21.
  • Core & Main (CNM) - started trading July 23.
Companies collectively valued at over $8.5 billion, collectively raising over $1 billion, in very different industries, with very different origins. This is a healthy sign for the St. Louis economy and its entrepreneurial culture and infrastructure.
Very exciting indeed. Reminder that Perimeter Solutions will be joining this list, going public via SPAC sometime this Fourth Quarter.

Don’t forget Gainsight
They're not a publicly traded company, but certainly sound like a success story.
Did something happen to their SPAC?
AFAIK, they've never had a SPAC. Instead, they were acquired last November by Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm in Austin, for $1.1B, a "unicorn" valuation.

Emerson Electric Is in Talks About Deal With Aspen Technology

“Emerson is discussing a deal to merge its software assets with Aspen Tech and gain majority control of the combined entity for its shareholders, the people said, asking not to be identified because talks are private.

Aspen Tech, which has a market value of about $8.4 billion, would keep its own public listing, they said. Its management is planning to stay on after the transaction and run the combined software entity, one of the people said.”

That $11B on Aspentech wasn't enough? Lal has big ideas, and is far more open minded and smart than his predecessor.

Purina $250M Factory Expansion Increases Tidy Cats Litter Production

Purina leaders recently gathered in southeast Missouri to celebrate the completion of a $250 million expansion at the company’s Bloomfield, Missouri, cat litter factory. The project adds two new buildings to the 1.1 million-square-foot campus in southeast Missouri and expands capacity and production capabilities for Purina’s high-performing Tidy Cats litter products, the number one cat litter brand in the United States based on sales. The expansion results in 75 new positions at the factory, which now employs more than 450 people.

Is that 1300 construction jobs, or permanent jobs?

Not very often one hears of a startup company buying out a more established company, in whole or in part.
Great name, too.

STL Biz Journal: St. Louis adtech startup expands with acquisition
St. Louis advertising technology startup Advocado has expanded with the acquisition of a division of global data analytics and consulting firm Kantar.

Advocado said Wednesday it has purchased Kantar BVS, which provides technology to help brands measure the reach and impact of their advertisements. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in 2017, Advocado has developed a cross-media data management technology platform used by brands, media companies and advertising agencies and designed to boost advertising performance. It is led by its co-founders, CEO Brian Handrigan and Chief Operating Officer Jeff Linihan.

Advocado acquired Kantar BVS from Kantar, a global data and consulting company based in London. Advocado had previously licensed Kantar BVS' technology and said that its decision to acquire it will help enhance its customers' ability to understand the performance of their advertisements.

“By combining our next-gen attribution algorithm with the BVS ad detection data, first-party web tracking tag and other sources, our customers will benefit from an accurate, independent assessment of performance across broadcast TV, radio and digital platforms like CTV (connected TV) & streaming audio," said Handrigan.

Interesting take on what we the some of future might hold for urban food production/agriculture production.   St. Louis with a central location, unused building stock, land rich and access to water/relatively cheap utilities might be well suited to see a variety of investment not thought about in the last couple of years let alone 5 or 10 years ago.

^As well as our transportation infrastructure allowing for rapid market delivery. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to see a run of indoor urban farms coming into being in multiple large, seasoned warehouse structures, perhaps maybe even new builds.

After reading the article, I figured. Either way, seems like a win for North County, which is great.

Interesting regional jump - Fenton to North County. Not sure how often you see that in St. Louis.

Fallis in the not hard data but it was interesting when I might an acquaintance via my son's school who happens to work/has an extensive career in the Venture Capitalist business out here in Cali bring up the fact that St. Louis was on radar for a lot of people.  No specific details but our conversation revolved around the institutional success of Wash U/Wash U Med/SLU, etc....

I guess this one is given as per Bizjournals article and the fact that state leadership is focus on culture wars above all else.

Also, take away incentives and Rivian's announcement of next factory in Georgia revolves around workforce as per CEO.    In regards to the Right to Work requirement, note that Rivian's current plant in Normal IL is non union in a non Right to Work state and the company plans to expand over time there as well.

https://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/new ... 6#cxrecs_s

"To meet these shortages, employers are hiring from outside of the local area and offering increased wages,” said Veronica Gielazauskas, assistant commissioner in the Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development.

https://www.enr.com/external_headlines/ ... 1021934J9T

Founder and CEO Robert Scaringe told Bloomberg Television in November that the ability to recruit good workers was the most important factor in the decision. Rivian's existing plant in Normal, Illinois , like most auto plants that have opened in recent decades, is not unionized.

Not St. Louis related - but 2021 could end up being a bad year for KC corporate HQs. Oracle is in talks to buy Cerner (Reuters Article). This would result in KC, MO losing 1 of its 2 Fortune 500 companies (Cerner) and 2 of its 4 Fortune 1000 companies (Cerner and Kansas City Southern).
