The point stands wether I was mistaken on the FB DC or not. Its a good fit for a struggling high rise with no parking.

DeKalb is NOT getting a Facebook DC lol Chicago struggles immensely with all those "real jobs" and the only thing keeping it from emptying out like STL is boosterism, universities, and legacy.
Having literally just moved to Chicago last weekend, this is an insanely bad take.  The amount of new residential construction happening in the downtown core is just staggering.  Even with remote work, it's back to being bustling. If you think that Chicago is just barely hanging on, then I can't imagine what you think about St. Louis' short and long term future.

Chicago is having a similar issue to STL. Poor black families leaving and high income white singles/couples no kids moving in. It’s reason STL is having 2000 new apartment units open in 2022 and will exceed it in 2023 and it’s why Chicago is doing the same but on 10x scale

Really? Cause I just moved from Chicago after 3 years and have seen indications of the opposite to be true. You once stated "Chicago is the best city" so I will lump your opinion into reason #1 and #3. Chicago is one of the least desirable American cities at the moment. Lastly its not only poor lacks leaving its older people who are tired of the bad weather and middle class residents who overpay for the same amenities that are cheaper to access in smaller cities.
P.S. there is a lot I like about the city this is just an honest observation ...

STL has its quirks and as a Missouri kid I gotta soft spot for it but I say it has a bad vibe and disconnected downtown. Its literally a smaller,  slightly older, Chicago. I would consider living in STL before I would ever live in Chicago again; despite their food scene being better.

I have not seen Chicago look so bad since I was a kid visiting in the early 1980's. What it's transformed in to is so sad.

I don't know if it's the weather or people returning to the office (perhaps both), but downtown has seemed a little livelier at lunchtime over the last week or two.

I think Rooster moving to Wash Ave. has definitely been a godsend for the area, too. People, especially from the conventions, have been filling it up, and those who don't want to wait for it have been going to other places nearby.

What's the purpose of the "visitor center" in Kiener? On a relatively crowded (and beautiful) day yesterday, with normal visitors plus a rally for Ukraine, there was a lot of activity on the plaza and Citygarden. This new building was shuttered but had a woman sitting inside, visible through the window. And it appears - in another missed opportunity - to have no public restrooms. With the Old Courthouse closed for renovations, I heard several comments, particularly from rallygoers, about not being able to find a restroom.

Forget what it's called, but it's a haunted house convention. They display animitronics and costumes. Really crazy stuff

I agree on the need for restrooms. I see people peeing everywhere all the time. I end up using hotels downtown, which obviously doesn't work for a certain subset of the population.

As sad as it is to say, the visitor's center having a water fountain that functions in non-summer months is enough to make it extremely useful for me. The fact that all those Arch water fountains are turned off half the year (including many 75-80 degree days) is pretty frustrating.

On a recent trip to Paris, I absolutely loved their public restrooms everywhere, all of which had a drinking water spigot on the outside.

Granted it only helps 1/2 of potential urinators but seeing these deployed strategically around downtown would make a huge impact. Put one at every metrolink station too.

^There's this female standing urination adaptor thing I've seen marketed at pride events and the like. Maybe have a dispenser for those nearby? Of course this only helps if using them won't get you arrested for a sex crime, so I'd recommend some dividers at least.

The water fountain (with bottle filler) nearby is nice, sure.

But the building looks like a public toilet facility. I even couldn't believe it wasn't and tried a couple door handles, and saw a woman with a kid doing the same on the way back. One could say the same thing for the building in Citygarden.

The fact that they built this large, permanent structure - they being the Convention and Visitors Commission, for crying out loud - and completely, almost certainly deliberately left this feature off, boggles my mind. I can't imagine being a poor worker there and fielding the question all day, while there's almost certainly a restroom for the worker just a few feet away.

It's just so, so St. Louis.

We all know why they won't add restrooms.  Opportunity for bad press and responsibility for maintaining it.  Just another piece of infrastructure to maintain liability and accountability for.  It's sad.

I’m not surprised things were nice on your walk from yuppie white neighborhood to slightly less yuppie white neighborhood.

Unlike in Chicago, white St. Louisans haven’t walled themselves off from their black and brown neighbors with gentrification (yet). Even our swankiest most gentrified neighborhood is still about 25% black.

This a good thing btw.
