Having literally just moved to Chicago last weekend, this is an insanely bad take. The amount of new residential construction happening in the downtown core is just staggering. Even with remote work, it's back to being bustling. If you think that Chicago is just barely hanging on, then I can't imagine what you think about St. Louis' short and long term future.da_GOAT wrote: ↑Mar 17, 2022DeKalb is NOT getting a Facebook DC lol Chicago struggles immensely with all those "real jobs" and the only thing keeping it from emptying out like STL is boosterism, universities, and legacy.
Really? Cause I just moved from Chicago after 3 years and have seen indications of the opposite to be true. You once stated "Chicago is the best city" so I will lump your opinion into reason #1 and #3. Chicago is one of the least desirable American cities at the moment. Lastly its not only poor lacks leaving its older people who are tired of the bad weather and middle class residents who overpay for the same amenities that are cheaper to access in smaller cities.Laife Fulk wrote: ↑Mar 17, 2022Having literally just moved to Chicago last weekend, this is an insanely bad take. I have not seen Chicago look so bad since I was a kid visiting in the early 1980's. What it's transformed in to is so sad.da_GOAT wrote: ↑Mar 17, 2022Really? P.S. there is a lot I like about the city this is just an honest observation ...
^Agree! Convention Center has had a few volleyball tournaments. Love the feel on Wash ave.debaliviere wrote:I don't know if it's the weather or people returning to the office (perhaps both), but downtown has seemed a little livelier at lunchtime over the last week or two.
I think Rooster moving to Wash Ave. has definitely been a godsend for the area, too. People, especially from the conventions, have been filling it up, and those who don't want to wait for it have been going to other places nearby.JJ Taino wrote: ↑Mar 17, 2022^Agree! Forget what it's called, but it's a haunted house convention. They display animitronics and costumes. Really crazy stuffJJ Taino wrote:I went to BLTs yesterday and it was packed!
There was some type of Halloween or Gothic convention plus people from todays concert at Enterprise packed Sugarfire, BLTs, Roosters, Bailey’s Range and Hi-Pointe! Pi has missed the last four weeks of Wash Ave been packed.

I agree on the need for restrooms. I see people peeing everywhere all the time. I end up using hotels downtown, which obviously doesn't work for a certain subset of the population.bprop wrote: ↑Mar 21, 2022What's the purpose of the "visitor center" in Kiener? On a relatively crowded (and beautiful) day yesterday, with normal visitors plus a rally for Ukraine, there was a lot of activity on the plaza and Citygarden. This new building was shuttered but had a woman sitting inside, visible through the window. And it appears - in another missed opportunity - to have no public restrooms. With the Old Courthouse closed for renovations, I heard several comments, particularly from rallygoers, about not being able to find a restroom.
The water fountain (with bottle filler) nearby is nice, sure.eee123 wrote: ↑Mar 21, 2022As sad as it is to say, the visitor's center having a water fountain that functions in non-summer months is enough to make it extremely useful for me. The fact that all those Arch water fountains are turned off half the year (including many 75-80 degree days) is pretty frustrating.
On a recent trip to Paris, I absolutely loved their public restrooms everywhere, all of which had a drinking water spigot on the outside.

I’m not surprised things were nice on your walk from yuppie white neighborhood to slightly less yuppie white neighborhood.urban_dilettante wrote: ↑Mar 17, 2022huh... i was there in December. didn't spend much time downtown but walked several times between my hotel in Lake View and my friend's place in Budlong Woods. seemed pretty clean and vibrant to me.
He defintely rode the MetroLink out there. Oh wait...St. Charles doesn't have trains.MRNHS wrote: ↑Mar 23, 2022Downtown St. Charles, but still very scary stuff.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Mar 23, 20225 downtown businesses damaged by gun fire on Tuesday
