Great news!

Stltodau - Local producer aims to turn 'Holy Corners' church into gospel music hall of fame
A local film and TV producer is raising money to redevelop the historic Second Baptist Church in the Central West End into a gospel music hall of fame.

Monica Butler, founder of production company the Butler Group, says the 40,000-square-foot project will feature a state-of-the-art sound stage and film theater, hall of fame museum, education center, café, courtyard and event space. She plans to call it the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Cultural Arts, Entertainment and Gospel Research Center.

Seems like a great project for GreaterSTLInc to support.

You already know their proposal will include demo of the reliance auto building for surface parking

^If ever there were a building which could be cheaply and effectively converted into structured parking that would be it. Didn't someone already make a proposal to convert that building into a garage? (Well, a parking garage, seeing as it's already a garage.)

No way, that’s not happening. For one thing, the CWE historic district standards would never allow that. On top of that, I know the family that owns the Reliance Automotive building and they have a strong attachment to the building and will only consider proposals that uphold the highest and best use of the property.

Wow that sucks. Sounds like it was contained to the steeple though. Hopefully the the rest can be saved.

That is ***** terrible. What a failure that that building has been vacant for long enough that this was allowed to happen.

The flames were captured at 2:30am from the WUSM Cancer Center construction site, for perspective:

All in all, this one appears to have ended far, far better than it could have.  From what I've read, nearly all the damage was contained to the steeple.  Won't help the renovation costs, but even it looks to be sound.

Let's hope they had good insurance that helps cover some improvements they may have been planning.

I'm so sad about this.  I really hope the plan goes forward and the church is saved.

Seems like a bit of good news:
The developers view the fire as only a minor setback, said Lin Woods, president of Gospel Music Hall of Fame Missouri.

“We're a little bit upset, a little bit saddened by it, but it doesn't deter us from our goal,” Woods said. “We're pushing forward and making this a tourist destination.”

^Good! From what I was reading elsewhere it sounded like this was well contained. Glad to hear some positive news. That church is spectacular.

Wow that article was frustrating. Just a bunch of City officials and politicians saying that "it's complicated" to enforce a law that's been on the books for 8 years.

Well doing something is certainly more complicated than doing nothing.
