Pete Rothschild has probably walked past the former church at 500 N. Kingshighway a thousand times in the past twenty years. I don’t know at what point the idea came to him that it would be a great place to listen to “New Riders of the Purple Sage.” In any case, Pete has now purchased the building (originally built in 1907 and part of the Holy Corners National Register Historic District) and plans to convert it into a restaurant, banquet center, and venue for “niche” small concerts (oldies like NRPS and emerging groups). This plan allows the historic features of the property to be preserved while adaptively reusing the property for a purpose that will complement ongoing development in the Central West End. The total development cost is currently estimated at $6.5 million, and Lucas Meeting and Events LLC, the company that formerly operated the Lucas School House event facility in Soulard, is expected to operate the facility.

This morning, the City’s TIF Commission set a public hearing for the plan.

Sorry if I put this in the wrong section of the forum. Anyway, I hope this happens. It's a beautiful building.

Wanna bet the nearby residential owners nix any music venue in about 10 seconds flat?

^Probably, but this being on the East side of Kingshighway, they might have a better chance.

This is the property that was already proposed as a concert venue and nixed, right? Perhaps, perhaps Mr. Rothschild has some goodwill in the CWE and will not face as much opposition and it sounds as though it may not primarily be a concern venue . . . of course Fado was canned in one of his properties on Euclid.

^No. The earlier proposal was directly across Kingshighway, abutting the private streets to the West. This is the "Holy Corners" area; you need a scorecard to keep track of all the churches.

Rothschild Development gets Brownfield tax credits

The tax credits, issued through the Brownfield Redevelopment Program, will be used to remediate asbestos and lead paint in the redevelopment of the property, at 500 N. Kingshighway, into a restaurant and entertainment facility. Rothschild projects the redevelopment will create 62 new jobs, according to the DED.

My questions, how many venues can be supported? It seems like their is a proposal or similiar venue in every neighborhood at this point. Would this compete with Khiel, Pageant, Grand Center or all the above? I think downtown is a priority while supporting Grand Center and eastern end of the Loop as a strong follow up. CWE has a lot going for it without a music venue. I don't know or understand enough to validate my statement.

I believe the anticipated scale of the Rothschild project here to be much smaller than the other ones you mentioned. They'll have a stage, yes, and they'll hope to draw a crowd in, but I don't think they'd plan on competing for similar sized acts. I don't think they'd look to compete with the Fox for major theater, or the Sheldon / Powell for the symphony, or the Pageant for Kings of Leon. With the apparent focus on food & drinks, I bet this would be a great place for jazz, like what Finale had been in Clayton.

My guess is it will be something slightly larger, but similar to, the Firehouse (does that still exist?) by SLU or something like that. A "class C" venue for smaller bands and such. Your "indies" that pull up in a bus towing a trailer but can maybe draw a couple hundred people.

Just ran into rep for Cathedral Square Brewery. Hopes to open up soon on corner of Vandy & Lindell. Samples I had were very good.

Said they have been perfecting their beers for the past 18 months and are getting anxious to open up. When I asked where exactly they were located he said "Cafe Ventana and our buildings' backs face each other."

I think they might be in the old Playboy Club building.

Actually that's exactly where they are located. Once you said that it rang a bell.

Trying to buy an old church in the CWE. This could be an awesome brewery! And it would finally put this building to good use. :)

The West End World reports that plans for Cathedral Square Brewery to take over the former church on the corner of McPherson and Kingshighway are progressing well:
Padda and Grimes obtained the required number of neighborhood signatures for the licenses they applied for. St. Louis Excise Commissioner Bob Kraiberg said he has received the signatures and a hearing will likely be set within the next couple of weeks.
The alderman (Lyda Krewson) is asking that several conditions be put on the license approval, including one stipulating that at least 50% of the revenue must be from food, so I guess the restaurant/banquet space component is going to be pretty key for them.

Fantastic. If the place is run well, perhaps the restriction can be lessened in the future.

Still nothing on this I guess? They're still brewing new brews, but it's all done by a contact brewery in Wisconsin I believe.

^The West End Word article suggested they do some brewing in Weston, Missouri. Rezoning and construction permits were pulled for $2.5 million in July 2012 according to Geo St. Louis, but it also still lists the previous owner and doesn't list a recent sale.

Still no transfer to Cathedral Square and no progress that I've seen. I'm wondering whether Red Brick Management is letting the building fall to the LRA, as they haven't paid taxes since 2010, so they owe $70,000.

What a wonderful re-purpose for this historic church.  I don't believe there's another Hall of Fame for Gospel music in the country.

Great to see this. It’s a beautiful church that really needed to be saved before it was too late.
