Andy Banker. Is that the same dude that does the Covid numbers at the top of the newscast for the last year and half? Same guy?
Wait, that's Chris Regnier. Nevermind.

2021 homicides are up to 190, we're having a moderately high December, but we didn't do better than our 188 and 186 totals from '15, '16', and 18' - that'll have to be our goal for next year.

Rough year for Dutchtown. At least appears on paper, right?
Hard to see the positive change of Cure Violence. Anyone local have an ear to the ground?

That 3 homicide family dispute last week pushed the total up.

At the end of January, things will calm down for my day job and I'll be off paternity... I'm going to do some outreach to the city for some clarification on the new reporting, and then I'll reach out the county next to see what they have available.

And 636 COVID deaths so far but good luck getting cops to keep masks on.pattimagee wrote: ↑Dec 28, 20212021 homicides are up to 190, we're having a moderately high December, but we didn't do better than our 188 and 186 totals from '15, '16', and 18' - that'll have to be our goal for next year.

Almost just as important as the actual number is the homicide case clearance rate, likely going to end the year ~60%.
I believe it was as low as 30% in past years.

I would assume the higher success of clearing the cases is a big plus, a partt of any violent crime coming down. Hopefully city can continue pushing safety, stability and affordable housing and jobsaddxb2 wrote: ↑Dec 30, 2021Almost just as important as the actual number is the homicide case clearance rate, likely going to end the year ~60%.

Out my way, Oakland has had one of worst years for homicides in a long long time. Surprised they were not listed as one of the cities in the article.

Homicides may be down but overall crime is surely not down. In fact, it’s the worst I’ve ever seen. This is a take many others have as well.

Curious - do you have any data specific to your neighborhood or the city that shows that? SLMPD switched data reporting so its hard to review, but Im curious where you are seeing this.downtown2007 wrote: ↑Dec 30, 2021Homicides may be down but overall crime is surely not down. ^ it’s all feelings, no facts or data. Crime as a whole is still on a downward trajectory. It is hard to compare this year to last year because of the new way SLMPD reports to the fbi. Last year if someone shot someone during a robbery it was classified as a shooting and this year it was classified as both a shooting and a robbery.

No data but what people are witnessing is more credible than the stats. Just last night a car slammed into store and 2 blocks away in a sewerage incident hours later 20 rounds were fired during a dispute. Neither incidents will hit the stats but represent the lawlessness we are experiencing.

Statistics are not necessarily credible, either.sc4mayor wrote: ↑Dec 30, 2021Anecdotes are not more credible than statistics. Ever.
Having said that, Americans would have a much more realistic perception of risk if CBS replaced their cop shows with a dozen primetime shows about peeling suburbanites out of their crushed automobiles.

They’re not. I’m not saying they’re necessarily wrong, but they certainly aren’t painting an accurate picture of what’s going on in our city crime wise.
No argument there. Both of my degrees require a background in statistics and I’ll be the first to say that they can be twisted to advocate a certain position. But I’d rather have stats then some anecdotes about personal experiences that largely mean nothing.MarkHaversham wrote: ↑Dec 30, 2021Statistics are not necessarily credible, either.sc4mayor wrote: ↑Dec 30, 2021Anecdotes are not more credible than statistics. If people are witnessing lawlessness and are generally concerned for their safety then I don’t think that means nothing. The so called positive crime stats aren’t keeping longtime residents from moving out of the city.
^ I witness lawlessness every damn day in this town because of the job I have and none of it is in the city btw. Funny how that’s what everyone focuses on though haha.

Funny how too many people dismiss it, deflect from the issue, shift blame, make meaningless comparisons, and try to cover it up with PR and stats. Therein lies the REAL problem.
