Truly a tragedy and with no intent to be an armchair investigator but I did catch that they had set a few orange cones. Really a FEW orange cones?  NOT to excuse  reckless driving but I have come up on more than a few road projects where there is literally next to nothing of a warning that a lane is closed or some work is going on.

^Before that I noticed earlier this year that MODOT started using crash in place of accident on message boards. I was really happy to see that change.

Seems it'll take a miracle to get the traffic reporter on KMOX not to use accident 99% of the time. You'd think after saying it 100 times each morning it might dawn on him.

I wonder if along with the mandatory breathalyzers that new cars will be required to have, if their on board computers will at some point start recording impacts and logging the time and location.

^Some new cars already do log that sort of thing. It's not something available to the consumer, or even the mechanic. And maybe not even to the insurers yet. But Toyota's black box installations came out in the Prius acceleration debacle. (Mind you, I love my wife's Prius as much as my own 1990 Miata, if in a different way.) Anyway, that stuff is there, though pretty darn locked down. The manufacturer can access it to asses performance and find problems. Not sure how anyone else would get to it though. I expect you can read forums on jailbreaking your car. (Or maybe jailbraking, in this case.)

Speed governors. I'd think they would be attractive to the parent with a teen driver.

While it's not a hard governor, GM has something like that with their 'Teen Driver Technology': link

It gives a nag warning if the vehicle goes over a set speed, and generates a parent-reviewable summary of the child's driving activities
