Myself as a pipe dream I'd love for 2nd Shift to move out of the industrial area.  The space they have has little charm too, you're in a warehouse with some barrels, cats and games.  I always said the same of Modern, but they're finally moving it seems.

My pipedream is 2nd Shift makes a beer I actually want to drink.

I've never had a problem with 2nd Shift. I don't mind a microbrewery seeming industrial. Modern's tasting room just seemed like an afterthought. 2nd Shift's wall of barrels and layout make it seem that there was some thought given to how the tasting room fits into the space.

Shadrach, what kind of beer do you like? I'm surprised there isn't anything you like from 2nd Shift. They've got a pretty good range of styles.

Does anyone know what was in the building before the grocery and dollar stores?

Anecdote: Went shortly after they opened, looked at the menu of IPAs, double IPAs, Sours and Hefes. I asked the bartender, ‘have any reds or browns.’ He literally scoffed and made a face like I let out a rancid fart then walked away not wanting to serve me.

If I wasn’t meeting a friend, I would have left. Maybe they changed. Maybe Rockwell has changed too. I’ve come to give up on craft brewers. I have no interest nor excitement. They all make the same stuff—IPAs and Hefes. Welcome back to the days when bars only offered ‘Bud or Bud Light’

Like you I also can’t find a beer at 2nd Shift or Rockwell I like. That’s why I stay in my rotation of Alpha, 4 Hands and Urban Chestnut.

Civil Life has a good brown, and Earthbound has/had a red that I think I recall enjoying (been a while).

There’s actually a thread for this but..,

Civil Life’s American Brown is a absolutely stellar! Hadn’t had the other, will need to try.

Miss Amalgamated’s Marzen. That was a fine beer as well.

Back to Miss Shell’s question —
I’m racking my brain because I lived in the area before it is what it is brut can’t remember what was.

I recall it being empty for a spell. I want to say it the entire building was a ‘Sav a lot’ (before the rebranding a decade ago), then it shrunk.

I think it was another grocery store prior to that. Or maybe a Skaggs.

Civil life doesn't make a bad beer, in my opinion.  Angel & Sword, Stout, Brown, ESB, Red...all good.  I'm not a fan of scotch ales, so I don't hold that against them.

I have found one beer at Rockwell that I can tolerate but don't ask me the name.  I go there for the beignets and the patio.  4Hands, Center Ice, Civil Life and Urban are my go-tos in that order.   And I love that I can rattle off 4 micro brewers that I love while noting 2 that I don't.  Amazing how far our beer scene has come.

I believe my father once mentioned it was another grocery store at some point, I will ask him next time I see him.

I believe it was a National before the Schnucks buyout/closure in the 1990s.

Thanks! Is there somewhere on the interwebs that list where the old Nationals were located before they went out of business? The only former location that I ever stepped foot in was one at Lemay Ferry and Forder, now an Ashley's Furniture. Based on the architecture, I'm assuming the Schnucks on Lindell was one.

I know the Sav-A-Lot was a National back before I lived in the city but I could swear it was another grocery store in between the time of the National buyouts (which would have been in the 90's) and when it became Sav-A-Lot. This would have been 2002-2007 when I lived on Shaw. Can't think what it might have been but I feel like I went in there once or twice.

It was a National, then a Shop and Save and finally Save-A-Lot  - Would love to see some mixed use infill on this site.

I would too, but not sure if the long term owners would sell or be willing to invest in St. Louis. That said, the owner (at least from what I can find dating back to the 90s at the very least) is Pacific Springs LLC out of California, has at least proposed redevelopment of one of their strip mall properties into a mixed use development: https://urbanize.city/la/post/eight-sto ... e-highland

Would they be willing to do that here? Zero clue. But this is now my new pipedream.

Agreed.  The site is prime for mixed use infill.

That entire Southwest Ave. corridor could use some infill.

I'd love to see the US Bank at Macklind, just across the street from the Save-A-Lot, turned into something else as well.

Will Amighetti's ever move into the old Hanneke building on the south side of Southwest? It was rumored that they would be opening a location there, but it has been slow, sloooooow going if it's still going to happen.

I know this will never happen, but the Save A Lot building would be a great location for TJ's...

The owner of Amighetti's owns the Hanneke building.  He is making the improvements himself hence slow progress.

Amusing thought but I doubt it could be that crazy. I think some posters here were reading entrails and casting bones in an effort to foresee the rising of the great blue box.
