Also, not sure what "St. Vincent's" is.
Maybe they used to, but you should see it now.

Looks like Square made a pretty substantial acquisition.    Can only assume as they get bigger and stronger it is a plus for St. Louis in the long run.

The merger is expected to close in the first quarter of 2022

^Straight-up monster deal there. Big props to Square. Even heard the talking heads on CNBC giving Jack Dorsey big credit for his dual corporate leadership.

I assume this is what they're referring to:  https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/gov ... op-story-1

An encampment popped up on its own between St. Patrick's and Square, and even St. Patrick's isn't on board with it:
"This came up on its own, and what it's become is not what we want to provide," said Amanda Laumeyer, senior director of development at St. Patrick. "There's no services, it's not dignified, not clean. It's not safe. At 3 a.m. anyone can walk up to a tent and open it."

Laumeyer was concerned for the safety of St. Patrick staff and others in the building due to the proximity to the plaza, she said. Some homeless people carry sticks, poles or bats in order to defend themselves.

They were on board with it to appease the Mayor until conditions got so bad they had no choice but to move it. St Pats is quoted before that they are on board with encampments, which signals they’ve lost sight of their way and mission.

CNBC: Jack Dorsey’s Square changes corporate name to Block

This rebranding reflects how the company is expanding beyond services for product sellers (the original "Square"), with everything from personal banking, loans, crypto & stock trading, and its developing businesses in cryptocurrencies. Regarding that practice, they are "doubling down" on a crypto practice they're officially calling TBD. Another part of the company already doing Bitcoin work, until now called Square Crypto, will be rebranded Spiral.

The name change will take effect 12/10/2021.

A name change to the thread in order as reported by Wall Street Journal?  Any Square now Block employees have any insights and or thoughts on name?

 https://www.wsj.com/articles/square-cha ... _lead_pos4

Square Inc., the financial-services company co-founded and led by former Twitter Inc. chief Jack Dorsey, is changing its corporate name to Block Inc.

The change will be effective later this month, the company said Wednesday. Its ticker symbol will remain SQ.

^Actually, the announcement was made after 3PM CST, so the numbers you should reference to the rebranding is the after-hours only.

Today's selloff in SQ shares has pretty damn much everything to do with the 750-point collapse the broader markets experienced, all of which is due to the first Omicron-variant COVID case in California. People are scared, and Wall Street is rotating out of tech to non-tech.

Am I the only one that is reminded of HR Block? Another financial services company? Seems like a poor choice for a new name.

Somehow I think this has more to do with blockchains and cryptocurrency.

^ I believe that is the intent as well.

Who knows, maybe with Dorsey now a CEO of only one company it will bode well for St. Louis in general if he can continue to grow Block into a multi financial company with everything from payments, to fintech, to micro lending to blockchains & cryptocurrency.  Of course, what people's opinions are of cryptocurrency is one thing but going back to the old adage I heard recently is that those who sold the picks & shovels during the gold rush tended to do better then those seeking the gold at end of day.

It's literally just a renaming of the company. All the app names will stay the same. This just helps differentiate Square the app from Block, Inc., which includes Cash App, Tidal, and other business units. Makes sense as the company continues to grow, and there is no re-org as of yet.

Block.xyz is live if you want to check it out.

No sh*t. I’m just saying the first thing I hear when I hear “Block” is a much different and much more well known company.

They could have gotten a little more creative in my own opinion.

Not to assume too much, but I think they intend to reflect the multidimensional future of Square moving forward as it pivots to more business lines - and I assume the name Cube was already taken.

Truth be told, if I was walking down the street and this dude was walking towards me I'd jaywalk to get to the other side to avoid him.  And this comes from a guy who generally has this happen to him....  Jus' sayin'....

^Can't blame @OnTheEdge for not wanting to be near a stranger who looks like he has an obvious and significant smell. I absolutely don't think it's prejudiced to say one doesn't want to be near the smelly.

Disclosure: I have a beard, too. You have to make sure it's properly washed. The longer the facial hair, the more likely food gets stuck in it.

Acknowledging that this is way off topic. Cheers to Jack's successes. Here's hoping it also bides well for the future of STL.
