Cards still got their 90 wins +/- 1 SD in this year so the organization's seasonal goal was still accomplished. The real kicker is the Dodger's likely Wild Card spot: imagine being a scummy organization that utilizes literal human trafficking to gain talent on top of hundreds of millions of dollars in salary (paid to sexual abusers, too!) only to be relegated to a 50/50 play-in game despite winning over 100 games. Lmao.

Best case scenario is still the Dodgers tying for the division on the last day, having to burn Scherzer in Game 163, lose, and have to rely on their 3rd or 4th starter in the Wild Card. In any case, I'd still much rather face the Dodgers in a WC game where the odds are 50/50 at best and anything can happen vs over a longer series. If the Cards advance past the WC, their chance against the Giants are much better since they've played them well this season and their team isn't nearly as intimidating as the Dodgers.

Still need the team to win 90 games though, since it'll force Nate over at VEB to get this season's rally animal, the Squat, tattooed on himself.

At one point this season the Cards had reached a low of .09% probability of making wild card. Not quite as far fetched as dying of covid but still incredible!

I was at Draft Kings about couple weeks ago and put 20 on Cards to win World Series as a lark. I think they had won 5 or 6 in a row at that point. The odds were very, very long. Looks better now that at least they made playoffs but it would be a complete shocker if it actually happened.

...pretty much what someone who is trying to sell the team would say

There are like 20 people in the Cardinals ownership group- does one want to sell his/her 2-5% share for whatever reason? Probably? Maybe? Do the Dewitts want to get rid of their lions share? Probably not

The family's assets may get split up a bit when Jr. passes.

I don't know how he's doing in terms of his health, but he is 80-years-old.

I don't want the family to sell the club, but that could be a driver if the rumors have any substance at all.

^ & ^^ Have to agree.  Undoubtly at some point you will have a family member who rather sell then own.

Complete and utter speculation on my part but what would be the possibility of Cordish Group expressing interest in a ownership stake if not already?  Maybe not even Cards but a stake in some sport franchise (say a NBA expansion team in KC).  Believe a lot of their signature developments are also associated with a sport/entertainment venue and or at least in close proximity.   Plus, Real Estate is becoming a bigger part of any stadium unless a public subsidy is handed over.   No doubt BPV tied to Cardinals.  I wouldn't be surprised if you will see some version/conception of West Downtown Soccer Village at some point.  In my neck of the woods, the only way A's stay in Oakland  is if their Howard Street proposal and village gets signed off.   So on...

This isn't Cordish's type of investment.  They've built their entire empire on selling their services to team owners - but they also like to have their concepts receive major components of their financing via investments from outside sources (i.e., those same team owners and state & local tax incentives).  Also, if you are a fan of any sports team, Cordish is a group you absolutely would not want to buy your team.  Out of state owners who are interested only in maximizing ROI... not ideal if you're focused on long term, consistent success.

As for a Downtown West / Soccer Village concept, wouldn't surprise me if some eventual concept is pitched. Maybe years before we see anything of substance actually gain traction though.  Hopefully it wouldn't be from or run by Cordish.  I'd much rather have someone like Clayco, who is tied into more than just generic bars that are identical to every other "ballpark village" development running point.

AFAIK the DeWitts have always actually been fairly small minority owners of the team and are more or less just the figureheads and public faces of the ownership group. But Bill is getting up there in age; he might be thinking about stepping away from his current positions and seeing if the other owners are okay with letting BDW III take over fully as managing partner and chairman.

One thing that throws a wrench into that is that BDW Jr. is one of the most influential owners in MLB, and who knows how much that would play into anything happening.

They put up $60m of the $150m in 1995. So they had 40% and over the years they’ve bought out other shareholders, at least 13% in 2007 alone

^ Apparently they own no more than 50% as of 2020, per Goold.

You wish organizations would be straight up sometimes.   Biz Journals reporting as philosophical differences.  Give me a break, its about winning unless its something toxic to the players or organization or to the league or to society in general like the recently fired Raider's coach.

Would love it if Cardinals just came out and said "Shildt did a great job of getting us to the playoffs for straight three years that he managed the team but we need to get to the next level of a National League Championship or better" because I can't think of any other reason.

My understanding that it is philosophical differences when it comes to the hitting coach, Mike wanted a new one and the Cardinals wanted to stick with the current analytics focused hitting coach

Shildt-canned. Mike was way too old-school of a manager for a team trying to compete with the big dogs; it's well past time for a more analytically-inclined manager to take the helm. Hopefully they look outside of the organization this time to avoid the "Cardinal Way inbreeding" that tends to permeate the team.

Hopefully means no more intentional walks in the 2nd(!!) inning anymore.

Its baffling but they aren't in the line up because of their general understanding and acceptance of established science.

Baseball players would shamefully injecting themselves with all sorts of experimental steroids 20 years ago but now they won't take a basic vaccine that has been proven harmless and effective and is required to play in certain cities.  People are weird.

I generally keep tabs of the box score from game to game but it must have a pretty good weekend for any Cards fan who had a chance to be in person during any of the Yankee series.

I'm so glad that MLB is changing to a model in which every club will play every other club every year.

This is going to be fantastic for the game.

The Cardinals just saw the largest-ever crowd in the history of Busch Stadium III on Saturday for a regular season Yankees matchup. Being able to play those American League East and American League West clubs that we've historically rarely seen is going to be incredible. It will create intriguing matchups and narratives that we didn't have previously under MLB's old scheduling model.

It should NEVER have taken until 2019 for Albert Pujols to return to Busch Stadium III as a Los Angeles Angel after he left St. Louis in 2012. It's absolutely insane to me how much money MLB has left on the table due to its historical rigidity, and that it's taking until just now to correct some of these common sense issues.

That said, better late than never.

Last night's game was crazy. It's really starting to feel like one of those "storybook seasons".

^ Couldn’t agree more. Yadi and Waino tied the battery record today as well. Unfortunately they lost…still a hell of a milestone and Yadi had two homers!

Its nuts that the team will do 3.2M this year, they were hoping best case to do 3M

2,816,626 after 70 home games, and i think the final 11 will all be 43-48K
