Abstrakt is known for having subjecting workers to crappy hours and crappy pay (until you rise up a bit. then just even crappier hours) It's all ok though because they have a bar cart on Fridays and a "fun" company culture.

Also the majority of the company is a glorified call center, a huge chunk of their business is subcontracting cold calling to businesses from around the country.

Looks like the city will help GRG purchase the garage:

I'm curious, does the casino contribute any money to the Landing in any way besides general fund taxes? CID or anything?

Considering all the promises they made (and broke) for developing their portion of the riverfront a flow of money for infrastructure improvements like the GRG project seems like the least they could do.

Believe you have to give  a previous city administration, believe it was Mayor Slay, some credit as well for accepting a bad deal to get out of the original promise in first place.  Still can picture the mockup of future infill, development that sat in Terminal 2/Southwest baggage claim for a while.  Sure a picture of if is buried in the casino thread.

I think the city helping out on garage and getting rid of an old parking garage in the flood plain that flooded more times than not is a good thing at this point.   Unfortunately the Landing is now stuck with land banking of prime, infill spots above the flood plain and no one who is willing to lead the charge on removing the raised freeway separating the Landing from downtown/near northside, anyone, someone!!

This paragraph from the previous story about that land deal gave me pause.
If purchased, the land would be added to a growing corridor of open park-like spaces along the Mississippi River from Laclede’s Landing into the north riverfront as part of a plan to remove barriers and vacant buildings, helping the city reconnect to the waterway to which it owes its existence.
I haven't been down in a few months. Is the bike trail still cut off by a closed floodwall and the Ashley Energy street closure? Is the trail passable by the new Jamo lot concert venue?

Perhaps they should start on that plan to remove barriers at some point with unblocking the bike trail that's been blocked for the vast majority of the time since the upgrade coinciding with the Arch grounds revamp.

"Barriers" is a great encapsulation of the landing. I think Lumiere just installed some new closable gates just at their north entrance, adding to all the other barriers. There are barriers at most intersections down there, not all closed all the time.

PostSep 26, 2021#631

Went for a walk down there.

It's all barriers!

The concert venue has added a third bike trail closure in a short stretch. Does Lumiere own all these surrounding streets where they're adding new yellow movable barriers everywhere within a two-block radius?

Thanks for the photos eee123

Those pictures are probably are just another example of why the city doesn't need anymore investment in new parks or green space right now!  But more investments in making things better.  You could easily invest in functional barricades that prevent drag races, as GC once again found a few words to eloquent explain why, while making the paths useful for their intended or desired means such as bikes & pedestrians.

When it comes to the floodwall(s) that to me  is a city admin/various departments being lazy by keeping them closed instead of only closing them during an imminent threat which undoubtly might be a couple times a year.   Lack of leadership holding people accountable.

Highly recommend that everyone who wants to see this fixed call City Hall and tell them to please fix this mess.
  • Start with your own alderman.
  • Alderman Jack Coatar, 7th District, has much of the Landing in his ward, including where eee123 shot those pictures.
  • Alderman James Page, 5th District, has the trailhead of the Riverfront Trail (between Biddle and Mullanphy) in his ward.
  • A call to Mayor Tishuara Jones' office should follow contacting at least one alderman's office first.
Then again, assuming this is an established public safety issue recognized by the above parties, there's little to be done. Res ipsa loquitor.

For the trail itself, call the Great Rivers Greenway and get them to say what's up with the floodwalls.

Isn’t that specifically the parameter for the outdoor concert venue?

PostSep 28, 2021#638

From GRG

“the street south of this floodwall is temp. closed for Lot on the Landing concert series. Once over on Oct. 10, we'll once again request that the City of #STL reopen the gate for greenway users. And FYI, the gates at the Ashley Energy Plant at Biddle Street will also be open daily (6am-6pm) beginning next week; further reducing needs for detours!“

Damn.  Even though it's not my scene they've been an anchor for the neighborhood for a very long time.

I've been holding out hope because the lights have been left on the entire time they have been close. Like all of the house lights and neons.

Still a huge bummer for the Landing. Only a couple businesses left from the old days. Too bad they couldn't hold on a bit longer.

I think they even left a few TVs on.

They were waiting for the metal "trellis" to be fabricated.

I was down there is past weekend and the Mexican restaurant was busy and Morgan Street had bunch of outdoor tables taken. the 3 upcoming apartment buildings will make the place so much lively and that restaurant/bars will follow.

The Landing really just needs to regain a sense of positive momentum. Things have been moving in a positive direction (between the streetscape, garden, and Peper Lofts) but not nearly fast enough to get that vibe back. Big Daddy's closing is another blow.

I would hope we could get 3-4 businesses to open within a year of each other. That combined with the Advantes renovations wrapping up will get people chatting positively about the Landing again and give other potential retail/dining tenants the confidence to invest in the Landing.

The question is whether the Landing is viable anymore as an entertainment district, or if the development focus should be as a mixed-use residential neighborhood similar to Lafayette Square.

They should go with what works.  If they can fill apartments and office space, do that. It's going to be difficult at this point for the Landing to draw a critical mass of bars and restaurants with all the competing "districts" and "villages" in and around downtown...

I heard that one of the few remaining tenants in Raeder Place has closed their office (probably permanently) due to the stabbing right outside the building. There are now so few people on the Landing that stuff like this can happen. Really depressing how much harm crime does to our City (not to mention the couple this guy robbed or the guy he stabbed).

Landshire and Abstrakt Marketing Group are still there (AMG is in a few buildings down there)

Brand Addition recently moved their US HQ to 707 2nd street.

Landshire has been gone for years.  But Raeder did just land Continental Mapping.

As an active member of Laclede's Landing associations and committees, I'm not aware of any tenants closing up shop due to crime (that weren't already dark since COVID, at least).

Paincourt is under construction and Greeley and Hoffman are kicking off any day now.  The neighborhood has invested in and continues to expand it's camera network, there are a ton of events being planned, and there's even a lot happening with retail/restaurant/parking behind the scenes right now.  I know people were bummed about Big Daddy's, but the future is bright.
