A lot of self full-filling prophecies in this thread. “I don’t go downtown much but one time I did it wasn’t busy”…..
Who are you referring to?

If me, I've been working downtown for 25 years, spending dare I say more waking hours and money there than many residents.

My comment applies to about 95% of people who complain about downtown

And have walked over 5,000 miles in downtown since last April

I had 4 different sets of guests from out of town (all family from my side or wife's) visit over last 2 weeks.  1st group in went downtown alone, met did the arch and lunch plus bpv and then met them at 4hands.  They loved it and the farmers market at Tower Grove.

2nd group spent all their time in CWE, enjoying the restaurants and shopping on Maryland.

3rd group split time, but used metro (Cortex) to get to and from Cards game.  Loved it.

4th Group was everywhere, from downtown to Hamilton's (Lafayette Square) to Rockwell brewery.  Loved it.

yes, Downtown has its challenges, but as pointed out, they are not unique to St. Louis in post pandemic world.  Now if someone can tell me why everyone in the world seems to drive like a distracted meth head in a stolen Nascar post lockdown I would like some insight.

And we do have tourists, as noted above, that have positive experiences in downtown.

It is bc the direction from the CAO and police dept to not police traffic violations.  The streets are the wild west with no enforcement of laws.

Glad to hear it! It's good to get an outside perspective. Whenever I have folks in town we generally get pretty darn positive reviews. And when I'm downtown myself lately it's seemed more hopping each time I've gone.

Any word on what this scaffolding as about? It’s been up several weeks and I’ve not seen any work being done.

I had heard some time ago the whole building was going to get some updates.  Not sure specifically what the scaffolding is, though my immediate guess is painting the windows...

From what I understand, that building used LIHTC to fund its rehab originally and those tax credits required like a 15 year period of providing Low Income Housing.  That 15 year period is over and it is now being rehabbed and brought into a market rate building. I assume this is part of that, though not sure what specifically.  Dapper Gents will be leaving that building in the next month or two.

Maybe they are just trying to give Washington Ave. a Midtown Manhattan vibe.  :)

Although I live not far from DT, and use the One Life gym at BPV, I don’t really come down all that often. But it’s popping today, even with the rain, and get giddy about the prospects of continued growth of this area. Of course there are issues and they need to be addressed but what a refreshing sight to see so many people and activity.

^That's not a terrible idea. It's . . . pretty modest. But it's a start. It'll be good to see how it works.

After the shooting, 5 On Your Side spoke with Dana Kelly, the owner of Reign Restaurant. She said she wants something to be done about the crime downtown.

“Get more security on all the parking lots downtown,” Kelly said. “To me, it would make sense that there are more city police officers down here.”
i know she can't monitor every person that comes to her club, but there's still something disingenuous about this. her business has been the epicenter of repeated violent incidents. not sure what parking lots have to do with it.

She is real good at deflection and should give politics a try.

The signs of neglect are unmistakable and worsening in the commercial hub of St. Louis. Try as business leaders might to generate enthusiasm for downtown’s revival, their efforts are being undermined by a sprawling, unsightly homeless encampment full of protest signs and trash just two blocks away from what should be a thriving restaurant district on Washington Avenue. Concrete barriers serve as constant reminders that the streets aren’t safe. The 1.4 million-square-foot AT&T tower sits empty.

Articles like the one above are easily the worst thing about St. Louis - and I'm talking about the article itself, not what it discusses.

I recently bought a loft on Wash Ave. Downtown needs a lot of work lots of it. Its growing but it should be growing at a faster pace. Problem is that a lot of companies invest (Square invest it over $70M) DT but leadership do not help them keep the DT area safe and clean! Last night I saw a whole bunch of homeless again harassing people and asking for money but the Mayor won’t do anything about it. I’m from Chicago so I got a tough skin but a lot outsiders from the burbs and other cities will get a bad taste of the city if this doesn’t get fixed.

I couldn't disagree more.  St. Louis has some serious problems and while its annoying that articles like this are written every day, the best way to see these stories disappear is to just fix the issues.
