In Professor Farnsworth's voice - "Good News Everyone!"

Literally Good News is opening another brewery in Augusta - No idea if it is related to the Hoffman's venture or if they are just like what they see happening there

Hoffman buys Mount Pleasant.

I am now officially opposed to this project. I'm very concerned this will kill the charm of Augusta.

So my girlfriend and I were in Hermann just before Halloween and I can't figure out why that town isn't more of a fall destination besides just winery day trips. I know Kimmswick does the "witches night" or whatever (or did pre COVID, and I imagine will again this year). But Hermann has an almost movie small town feel with just enough bustle on a handful of streets on a perfect fall weekend.

^ Any time I would take Amtrak to St. Louis from the west the trains would be packed with people going to Hermann.  Most were overnighters too.  I imagine there are a lot more day trips from the St. Louis area though...it's not a far drive.

^True. I do think there are more and more people taking the train for overnight trips to Hermann from St. Louis, rather than just a day thing. The Eastbound train on Saturday leaves at like 4 PM so why rush your day when you can book a bnb or air bnb and make a longer trip out of it.

Hermann is a full-blown community in it's own right; it's not just a tourist area. It's certainly a charming town, but I think some of the local "flavor" can sometimes rub people the wrong way. I spent a couple of days there last year, and we witnessed a pickup truck driving down 1st Street proudly flying a ten-foot Confederate flag. The woman I was with felt a little unwelcome.

^Very true.  We can sometimes forget that outside of New England, California, and much of the Pacific Northwest when you visit touristy small towns they are often in very conservative areas.

When we were in Michigan last fall even though the tourist towns of Holland and Saugutuck were very inclusive places you still had people on their boats with "Trump 2020--F*ck Your Feelings" flags.

The boating community in Chicago is far more conservative than the general community

^We're definitely getting off topic of Missouri wineries but this article might shed some light on why boats (along with dune buggys) might be more prevalent among those with disposable income who lean right

https://www.mediaite.com/election-2020/ ... zy-people/

To bring it (sort of ) back to the subject matter and attracting tourism it would seem that certain demographics are more likely to spend their vacation money on boats and lake houses while others seek out more of an experience when they travel.

I visited LeChance Winery in Kimmswick on Saturday and was quite pleased with the wine and fare. I recommend it to anyone looking for a day trip now that the weather is improved

From St. Louis Business Journal:  A Florida company seeking to turn Augusta, Missouri, into a national wine destination is acquiring a local transportation company as part of the effort.

The Florida company has said its plans to invest $100 million to create a national destination, similar to the famed Napa Valley region in California...
Somehow I doubt that "Florida couple" is gonna turn August into Napa.

Apparently they’re also trying to emulate a Tennessee wine country area as well, which seems a little more on brand tbh haha.

Also that “Florida Couple” has a prominent office in downtown Clayton since they have several local ties. Napa is a stretch but I’m rooting for them...

They clear cut most of the trees at Baldicci and Montelle wineries. Big trees that used to provide shade in the hot Missouri summers. They claim they’re going to plant vines but right now the ambiance is that of a Vietnam battlefield after a napalm strike.

^Do grape vines like shade? I never really got that impression. Give it a few years. Vietnam is lush and green and beautiful and the only place to see the battlefield scars is at the war crimes museum. I do like my trees, but in this case it might be a necessary sacrifice. Maybe. We shall see. (Not really sure. I'm certainly no grape expert.)

This isn't a good look. Plus they cut down the trees over the deck and seating areas.

^Sure. Understood. But hillsides covered in sun baked vines will offer a different look. And wineries are in the business of growing . . . something. Cutting down the trees by the guest seating, however, is just dumb.

The trees at Montelle obscured the breathtaking views of the valley below. I have no issue with their removal and replacement with vines. There are other ways to create some shade

The view was fine after Montelle trimmed the trees a few years ago. They didn’t need to clear cut like McBride Homes building a new subdivision in Fenton.

They did if they want to plant vines there, which they do.

Another acquisition:
https://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/new ... 0#cxrecs_s
Hoffmann Family's purchase of the Emmaus Home Complex is the latest in a spree of acquisitions made by the company since the start of 2021 that target Augusta, about 50 miles west of St. Louis. The Florida company has said it plans to invest $100 million to create a national destination in Augusta, similar to the famed Napa Valley region in California or Blackberry Farm, a renowned wine destination in Walland, Tennessee.

In Augusta, Hoffmann's holdings include four wineries, six vineyards and several properties in the city’s downtown. Hoffmann has also inked an agreement to acquireWashington, Missouri-based transportation firm Mid-American Coaches, which operates the trolley that run between its wineries in Augusta.

I may have spoken too soon. This is an incredible re-use. Major kudos to the Hoffman family for taking this on.

Here is a link to the auctioneer's website that has 50 photos: https://www.trophypa.com/properties/mis ... -iauction/

This place is going to be a premiere wedding venue in the region.
