A CFL field wouldn't fit in the Dome, but I'm sure it would in the new soccer stadium, so yeah, maybe if the merger or whatever falls apart and the XFL 3.0 doesn't happen, then maybe that's a possibility. That is if the CFL still exists in a couple years.

This is a good article (and check out the comments below it as well), which discusses all the rule differences between the leagues, and the obstacles, possibilities, and pros and cons of some type of XFL-CFL merger:

This grating douchebag has some good points if you can stand watching him:

Also there's this surprisingly good podcast on everything you never wanted to know about the history and viability of the Canadian Football League, plus a bit towards the end about why the XFL would be interested in acquiring or merging with the CFL:

^ Good Stuff.   If this is to happen, they have to abide by traditional United States football rules and regulations.

The CFL game is more offense (sorry, O-ffence, eh) oriented, and faster paced, with fewer delays. Players are smaller and more athletic overall because of the larger field, i.e. fewer 380lb. barely-mobile beasts. This creates more opportunities for top athletes overlooked by the NFL. I really think Americans would like it, maybe even prefer it, if they gave it half a chance.

I would like to see some kind of hybrid rules, though - keeping the best of the CFL traditional game, combined with the XFL innovations from last season - which will continue to evolve. Something modern and different than the NFL game, which doesn't try to directly compete with it. And something that will pull in the younger demographic who are tuning out of more traditional sports, who like the MLS and things like live, in-game sports gambling.

^What Urbanitas said. I want to see the Canadian game before I declare the US rules should replace the Canadian rules. I've no real love for the US game anyway. Let's try their game and see if we like it. :)

(Though, obviously, we'll have to see if we can squeeze it into the dome. Or . . . somewhere. The dome is due for a reconfig anyway. Enlarge the field at the expense of some of the seating if necessary. Probably not a bad idea anyway. There's no real call for 60,000 seats in there and there probably won't be again in the foreseeable future for anything other than a concert. Which puts chairs on the field anyway.)

Watch the last few minutes of this Grey Cup game. It was 33-23 with <2:00 left on the clock. Final score was 39-33. That's nearly impossible in the NFL.

^Thank you! At a glance that does look to share some characteristics with the XFL game. I looked at the highlight reel first, and, well . . . highlight reels will probably always seem faster and more exciting. But I think I see what you're getting at. Will try to give it a little more of a look tomorrow, but in general I think I could get behind this. (If we have a team, that is.)

TSN: Dave Naylor: Shared global vision underpins potential CFL-XFL collaboration

"For many, the raging debate about the Canadian Football League’s potential alignment with the XFL boils down to a choice of either staying Canadian or selling out to be part of another attempt at alternative professional football in America.

What’s been largely ignored in that conversation is the idea that XFL and CFL leadership share a similar vision of professional football going global.

^ Globalization is certainly feasible. The Japanese X League has existed for decades and while not a true 'professional' league, the quality of play is extremely high and very entertaining. The X Bowls are certainly fun to watch.

Absolutely. I can see an international league with 6 or more geographic conferences, all under a shared management, marketing, and player development umbrella, with a particular emphasis on under-21 and international players like soccer. Between international broadcast rights, sponsorships, and gambling, there is a lot of revenue potentially available to a single organization that a loose alliance of local owners would find it much harder to tap.

Maybe the best or two best teams from each conference then form a champions league with a short 2-3 week playoff season in one host country each year...

It may take a decade or so to develop, but it's something with which the NFL won't be able to compete, because the disparity in the level of play would be too great, and they are extremely paranoid about diluting their brand.

Now that partnership talks have ended, there's some speculation that at least one CFL team might move to the XFL in 2023:

I did not expect it to catch on, but when we watched those games at the Amseterdam it genuinely surprised me. There was some real enthusiasm there. "It's another Battlehawks First Down!" Well then, ker kaw it is!

Good times. If the Battlehawks come back, would love to see Hunsicker and crew back at the helm. They did a great job.
