I bike a lot (as safe as I can) through the central corridor, so that's probably where I'd put my money on my untimely death at the hands of another, but something like this is probably the runner up.  A completely innocent bystander just driving along one of the region's most popular roadways on a Monday afternoon.  Could've been me taking an Uber to/from the airport.

An officer was shot in the neck last night on north Broadway. Non-life threatening injuries. This is the tenth cop to be shot in the City since June.

ramp metering is an effective way to manage congestion.

I can't find it on Google Maps, but I'd swear there was a ramp meter onto 40 near Forest Park somewhere or other. Did they get rid of the "turnstiles" with the redesign?

The entrance ramp to 64/40 westbound from McCausland did have a ramp meter that was installed in the 1990s. It was only in operation for a couple years if I recall correctly. As far as I know, it's the only ramp meter MODOT has ever utilized.

While ramp meters may achieve the same goals as turnstiles when it comes to congestion, I doubt they are as effective when it comes to shootings in highways.

what if they come with a metal detector.....ill let myself out now

on a related note, something else that doesn't stop bullets is apparently living on the 5th floor.   This sweet old couple in my building (park pacific) lived on the 5th floor and had a bullet bounce around their unit on Halloween night, so like any sensible people they moved right away.......to the 18th floor.

You don't think charging drivers to enter the system will keep criminals away?

^ honestly, probably not—especially if it's electronic. i don't think the human garbage shooting people on the highway are gonna be too concerned about getting a ticket in the mail. though maybe photographing vehicle + driver + license plate would be a deterrent. but OMG can't SURVEILLE (BUM-bum!) b/c it's only hundreds of people being murdered every year.

An UMSL criminologist on Donnybrook tonight pointed out that the per capita murder rate in the City is at an all time high.

Not a shock.
Can we not count the murders by non-city residents?

The "capita" part, the crime rate denominator, is at a 150 year low.  The city population has not been this low since before 1870.  1860: 190,524.  1870: 351,189.

Note the 1870 census number is a sham.

Do you think that someone who is going on a shooting spree on a highway will care to pay tolls in the absence of a physical barrier?
That is my point - charging drivers to enter the highway will only work if there is some type of barrier that does not let you enter the highway unless you pay. If we do it Europe/NY-style with electronic tolls it will be the same as nothing, given the total lack of enforcement of traffic laws in the city.

No, I think it's bs. I make this point as a retort to those who think turnstiles on Metrolink will do something about our region's crime problem.

Just a FYI - ramp metering isn’t tolling.  It’s literally just a green/red light at the highway entrance ramp that blinks between green and red every 5 seconds (or whatever it’s optimal during specific hour of the day) to let cars on to highway.

Would tolling stop rolling highway shootouts? No. Would turnstiles reduce crime on a transit system? Maybe on the margins

@quincunx Got it. I agree with you regarding Metrolink, but physical barriers on highway ramps are harder to circumvent and could maybe make a difference.
@db: I understand, my point still stands. I think that anything that does not involve physical barriers won't be much effective.
