The Porch hung around for quite a while too. Probably longer than it was profitable to hang around. I'm not sure if the Sweet Devine counts as retail, but they are retailish at least. I can't even think of many other places that have even tried, there was that arts and crafts shop Paste I think?
Not to derail the thread, but awhile back I spoke briefly with King Realty about their empty lot on 9th & Soulard.  The guy said they wouldn't start on that until 1001 Russell was done, but there were plans in place.
I wish them luck, but there have been plans in place for 15 years and at least 3 developers.

^ I forgot about The Porch.  That wasn't vacant for too long, but yeah it wasn't replaced with "retail" unless a coffee shop is considered retail.  I wonder what the deal is with 9th & Soulard.  Maybe getting something approved is the issue?  It seems bizarre such an obvious corner would go vacant for so long (then again...we are in St. Louis).

^ Yep, happened mid-COVID.  Good to see the space getting filled relatively quickly.  Thanks for the update.

There have been a couple of different plans approve at least for 9th and Soulard. I think it's been a combination bad luck, bad timing, bad plans, and bad developers. The first group that took a crack at it started in the mid 00s and they were ready to break ground right before the real estate market collapsed. There plan wasn't super ambitious, but it would have been fine if the timing had been better. I'm glad to hear King Realty is on board now.

Awesome! I feel like we always see city food joints expanding out into the county. Nice to see the reverse in action here.

Nice!  I'm glad to see some movement in this building...sounds delish.  The article says it won't be as all-encompassing as the Maplewood location; I'm assuming that means no brunch?  I'd think a brunch at this location would clean up, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen at this location at some point, too.

Interior work is still moving along, but the paint on the outside of the building is already chipping off in several spots.  I hope this building can stand the test of time (might be an exaggeration since it's just paint lol).

Updates on this area. Boardwalk Waffles and Ice Cream will have both a retail location and their corporate office at 1001 Russell.

There is also a chicken takeout place going in next door to The Island a half block up the street, same owner as the Island.

Glad to see the retail slots filling in. My ex lived in this building and hated it.

I'm curios, why did she hate it?
