Yes. It was a joke. But for all the guise of security, I would think they would invest a little more into a real fence lol. It's not like it's ever going to truly interact with the area around it.
Hey Im super excited for all the trees/shade they are adding along the sidewalkurban_dilettante wrote: ↑Mar 06, 2020no it's okay everybody it's urban look there's a woman pushing a stroller!
I understand why they wouldn't want any trees or shrubbery around their fence, but yeah I do hope they can at least put some trees and landscaping in the curb lawn, although the renderings don't even show one...
Yall really need to stop hating on this project. We are incredibly lucky to have such a large investment in our city, ESPECIALLY on the northside. Beautified green space is better than vacant lots that would take decades to fill.
These kinds of statements remind me of what a friend recently said, She herself struggled with being overweight and St Louis reminds her of 'The fat girl at the prom' when it comes to investments. So very grateful to be asked to dance that you ignore obvious flaws and red flags.thestlguy wrote: ↑Mar 10, 2020Yall really need to stop hating on this project. ^ While I agree and St. Louis should (and in my opinion can) demand better, losing these 3,000+ high paying jobs and the increased investments in startups and the Geospatial sector that's now taking place in nearby places like Cortex and the Globe Building downtown to the cornfields in Illinois isn't a much better alternative. If St. Louis can replicate the success with Geospatial that it's had with Agtech, I think most of us would prefer to see those investments happening in city and not at Scott AFB.
A federal spy installation is never going to win any urban design awards...and no matter what the city could or should of demanded of this particular project the federal government was never going to change their security requirements. Not a chance.

They have to keep bland and limit the landscaping. They don't want Elliott Davis showing up wanting to
know if the extra expense was worth it. After all you paid for it.

^That is true, though. We all admire those great government buildings from yesterday, and lament that "they don't build 'em like they used to". But then we b**** and moan when they want to spend a little extra money to make today's buildings look nice.

I still don't understand why this couldn't have been accomplished in the riverfront instead of wiping dozens of city blocks off the map. Couldn't we have just given them Fairground Park. I kid, I kid, kind of.sc4mayor wrote: ↑Mar 10, 2020^ While I agree and St. Louis should (and in my opinion can) demand better, losing these 3,000+ high paying jobs and the increased investments in startups and the Geospatial sector that's now taking place in nearby places like Cortex and the Globe Building downtown to the cornfields in Illinois isn't a much better alternative. they're already landscaping significant chunks of the site inside the fence, so I strongly doubt that anyone would complain about minimal landscaping along the sidewalk.
i just think the idea of someone taking the baybay out for leisurely stroll next to this wasteland is f*cking hilarious. i'm sure that whoever put that rendering together fell off their chair. this one beats the "woman pushing stroller across 15 lanes of traffic at Jefferson and Chouteau" rendering.
oh, gosh, sorry. i mean rainbows and unicorns and ice cream!

Yeah, that's just what they want you to think. Just a young family out for a stroll...every 5 minutes to the second. Just try to climb that fence next to them and see what happens...urban_dilettante wrote: ↑Mar 10, 2020i just think the idea of someone taking the baybay out for leisurely stroll next to this wasteland is f*cking hilarious. i'm sure that whoever put that rendering together fell off their chair. this one beats the "woman pushing stroller across 15 lanes of traffic at Jefferson and Chouteau" rendering.

Here's some pictures I took Friday of the NGA site. Construction trailers are on site.
Also, here's another pic of McKee's infamous 2-walled structure -- which looks exactly the same as when I photographed it several months ago. This is the same type of structure that blew down over a year ago.

I wonder if flying a drone around here would be an issue? I'm curious about how much excavation is being done on this site.
I’d guess flying over it is a no no. Staying outside the perimeter might be okay.
It does have the space listed as a flight restriction area on the FAA website.

I jumped threads on this topic of US Space Command HQ but anyone with access to biz journals story behind paywall concerning St. Louis in the running. The only thing that makes sense to me is that St. Louis proposed NGA site with a nifty tie into geospatial
Yes, I do agree the whole Space Command is a farce as the US Air Force has been in space for decades & can't see the logic in changing things. However, who would argue about the jobs even though I think Scotts AFB landing HQ would help secure its future for the long term. I also think politicians on both sides of the aisle are really good at adding government but terrible at removing so doubt things will change in foreseeable future whoever controls White House.

If it actually happens and it is in our area I think it will be out at Scott.dredger wrote: ↑Aug 11, 2020I jumped threads on this topic of US Space Command HQ but anyone with access to biz journals story behind paywall concerning St. Louis in the running. The BJ says the City itself has four or five sites they are pitching. St. Clair County is pitching separately. So if the city’s bid is successful it won’t be at Scott.
St. Louis has made it past the first cut. No word on what cities or sites were eliminated. I still think this whole thing stays out in Colorado...should it even happen.
460,000 square feet of office space would be required, 400,000 square feet of parking (yikes). I’m sure a security buffer would be required, but I’m not sure it would have to be as big as NGA. Williams said the city would likely have to provide the land at no cost to the Feds...so tying it into the NGA campus would be helpful, though I find it unlikely they’re pitching that site.
I would be fine with Scott, but I’d also take the 1,400 jobs for the city too.

Scott AFB seems like the most logical choice by far for the region & probably best for the region as a whole If it does happen, and agree a big if.
But it does makes a lot of sense to me if city was going to propose a spot they would go with NGA. NGA footprint has ample room, facilities and security being built from the ground up. Move FBI office into NGA footprint and you end up with pretty strong Federal campus built around national security..

^ Pretty much agree. The 400,000 square foot of parking leads me to think Scott as the better choice, land use wise. But as you mention...NGA, this and potentially the FBI would make for a nice secure campus and would consolidate all of that together so other parts of the city could avoid being used for secure federal installations.

I like the Scott site, but as a minor aside, I would like to point out that the city owns seven hundred eighty thousand square feet of vacant spaceship factory (all on one giant floor with absurdly high ceilings) adjacent to seven hundred forty thousand square feet of parking all inside a security perimeter up on the north side of the airport. They've been trying to turn it into a cargo facility, so they might not want to volunteer that, but . . . it sure as heck fits the bill tidily. You really couldn't ask for a better or more symbolic site.
^ Nice thought. Of course on a different tangent, the property noted also reminds me of how badly the city has failed to capitalize on Lambert's footprint in a region ready made for logistics. The fact that the site with ready made access to runways, freeways, and even a railhead nearby would even be available still boggles my mind.
