Always thought it was odd we don’t see that many updates from Chicago considering how many cool projects are happening there.

This one isn’t particularly urban, but Facebook is building a nearly $1 billion data center in the Chicago suburbs.  Two buildings will be completed by 2022 and another 3 after that.  Will employ about 100 people.
https://www.chicagotribune.com/business ... story.html

For those that don't have a subscription to the Trib, a couple details are that it will rely solely on renewable energy and use 80% less water than other centers.

That's incredible. A $1 billion investment that will only create 100 full time jobs.

Not sure about the details for this one, but number of people employed is a lower bound on the number of jobs created by a given project. Certainly there will be contractors, etc. who will be creating further jobs beyond those people who are directly employed.

Even still. If you use a 2.5 multiplier (which seems pretty generous) its only 250 jobs.

Data centers aren't exactly known for their job creation abilities...

Now...the proposed One Central development in Chicago will probably create thousands of jobs:

Er...not exactly a compliment.

Seriously, though, I've always wondered how sky bridges several hundred feet up withstand earthquakes. If the north tower sways six inches north, while the south tower sways six inches south, you've got problems.

Here's Chicago's currently under-construction Studio Gang project:  Vista Tower

Really, really cool engineering details in that article if you can see it.  It's a pretty spectacular building.

^Because Dubai has the world's largest collection of the world's ugliest skyscrapers. Just my opinion, of course.

^^ I won't speak for framer, but I wouldn't consider Dubai to be a city in the traditional sense.  It's mostly just a bunch of super tall skyscrapers plopped in the desert, surrounded by lakes and ponds.  It's not exactly an attractive city.  Metro St. Louis has a higher population density than Dubai.  Edit:  Should have said St. Louis County lol.

Dubai has no real reason to exist. In 30 years, it won't .

I think the Petronas Twin Towers solved that issue by basically having their skybridge not actually 'attached' to either building per se - it basically sits loosely in both buildings on shock absorbers and is actually designed to move with the buildings. I'd imagine a similar setup would be used here.

^The center of the bridge span is pinned so it can rotate and the whole bridge and diagonal supports can flex up and down when the towers move toward or away from each other. You can actually see the floor slope change on a windy day.

A good looking high-rise breaking ground in Chicago will be their first tower to start construction during the pandemic.  Kind of reminds me of a nicer looking (and taller) Centene building.

A 47-story North Michigan Avenue high-rise is set to break ground during the pandemic. Sterling Bay CEO says it took a ‘herculean effort.’

Chicago NIMBY's are lining up to stop another large high-rise that is about ready to move forward as well:

And finally...Chicago's bike share is getting a massive expansion too:

Not that is excuses what is happening in downtown St. Louis: but I found this interesting.

https://cwbchicago.com/2020/09/man-robb ... e-say.html
Man robbed at knifepoint near Wrigley Field, police say
September 17, 2020 CWBChicago Wrigleyville
An armed robber put a knife to a man’s neck and robbed him near Wrigley Field on Wednesday morning, according to a CPD report. No arrests have been made.
The victim, age 19, told police he was near Clark and Waveland when the man approached him, displayed the knife, and demanded his valuables around 10:10 a.m., police spokesperson Kellie Bartoli said.
After getting the victim’s money, wallet, and iPhone, the offender fled westbound on Waveland. Police searched the area but weren’t able to find the robber, Bartoli said.
The victim, who was not injured, said the robber is a Black male between 20- and 29-years-old who stands about 6’3” tall and weighs about 150 pounds. He reportedly has dreadlocks and wore a black jacket with dark pants that have a white stripe.
Area Three detectives are investigating.
Wednesday’s robbery is the latest in a streak of violent crimes near the Friendly Confines. On Sunday, a series of armed robberies, carjackings, and auto thefts were reported as part of a major crime spree. Early Monday, video captured sixteen gunshots being fired a couple hundred yards southeast of the stadium. No one was injured.

So, basically, Wrigleyville is just how it was in the mid-'90s. Got it.

I’ve been in Lakeview/Wrigleyville for over a year now. Feel less safe here than I ever felt in my 3 years in the grove. Also now feel less safe in the Loop than I did in Downtown STL a few years ago.

Can you elaborate? Anything to do with the protests? I remember seeing Chicago being pretty wild during the riots.

Nothing to do with riots. It’s probably the same crime wave we’re seeing in every city.

A few things have stood out to me though...
1. Fairly frequent (once a week) random and gruesome attacks.
2. Robbery. Middle of the day, broad daylight. Women and children seem to be the targets frequently.
3. Car violence. Road rage, harassment of pedestrians, reckless driving.

^ Yeah I definitely don’t think it has anything to do with riots or unrest, at least not anymore...no matter how desperately certain people and politicians are trying to make it seem that way. As others have pointed out...cities are emptied out with no sports, conventions, festivals, office workers, etc. No eyes on the street...coupled with millions of anxious, bored and jobless people and a government that seems more concerned with throwing gas on the fire than solving anything.

I read in the KC Star last night that a burnout/drifting “sideshow” on Southwest Blvd in Downtown KC ended in a shooting that left one dead and another injured. A similar event earlier this month in Swope Park also resulted in 6 injuries when shots rang out.

I read the Chicago and Philly papers too. Similar stories all across the country. I fear this is pretty much going to be the reality across much of the country until this pandemic passes.
