I’ve been in Lakeview/Wrigleyville for over a year now. Feel less safe here than I ever felt in my 3 years in the grove. Also now feel less safe in the Loop than I did in Downtown STL a few years ago.
Can you elaborate? Anything to do with the protests? I remember seeing Chicago being pretty wild during the riots.
Nothing to do with riots. It’s probably the same crime wave we’re seeing in every city.

A few things have stood out to me though...
1. Fairly frequent (once a week) random and gruesome attacks.
2. Robbery. Middle of the day, broad daylight. Women and children seem to be the targets frequently.
3. Car violence. Road rage, harassment of pedestrians, reckless driving.

I moved back to STL in Jan 18' just because of the craziness in Chicago.  This ain't new.  Had to keep an eye in all mirrors when a stoplights just to make sure I wasn't a carjack victim.  Doesn't matter where you are in the city.

I think it's still a long way from how bad it was pre-gentrification. But what I have heard from many long-term residents of Chicago, in general, is that the main difference between then and now is the brazen and unpredictable nature of it, e.g. gunfire/carjackings/muggings on Michigan Ave., the Loop, Lincoln Park, etc. in the middle of the day. And specifically, they almost all mention an unprecedented level of what seem to be primarily hate crimes. Nobody thinks this started with the pandemic, the trend began several years ago.

Hate crimes have going up since 2017 nation wide, Up 60% in Chicago from 2018 to 2019

Anti Semitic hate crimes at a 18 year high, on par with hate crimes against gays and African Americans

Because few are traveling right now, I thought I would share some photos from my two Chicago trips I took last year. One was in October and the other was in December.

October 2019 (Trip Dates: October 11th-14th)...
This trip was a nice one. Was chilly in the evenings, but bearable during the day. I stayed with a friend at Loyola for this trip.

Up around Loyola...

New Michigan Avenue Apple Store (built on the Riverwalk)...

Chicago Theater on State Street...

ABC 7 Studio on State Street...

View from the edge of Navy Pier...

Jeanne Gang's Vista Tower in Lakeshore East...

Interesting supports on a new high skyscraper...

Looking up...

The Fulton Market District...

Diversey Driving Range...

The Robey Hotel (formerly the Northwest Tower). This is next to the Damen Blue Line station on the O'Hare branch...

View from the rooftop bar of Robey...

The neighborhood around the Robey. Milwaukee Avenue was busy this day...

Wrigleyville...

Lincoln Park...

Michigan Avenue at night, and some other shots...

Skyline from New City parking garage at North and Clybourn...

December 2019 (Trip Dates: December 6th-8th)...
I'll tell you all what, this trip was fun but between me feeling sick and drained, in addition to it being cold, it was depressing. Chicago is not a place that I will visit anymore from November-March. I did stay at the Congress Plaza Hotel during this trip.

Rail yards South of Grant Park...

Jeanne Gang's Vista Tower...

The Chicago River...

Tribune Tower (being converted into condos)...

Millennium Park Christmas Tree...

Richard J. Daley Plaza Christmas Market (Christkindlmarket)...

State Street @ Christmas (Block 37 Mall, Macy's Window display)...

Michigan Avenue at Christmas...

Skyline from the "New City" parking garage at North and Clybourn...

Congress Plaza Hotel, a hotel which is rooted in history...

View from the hotel room...

We loved living downtown (near the intersection of State and Roosevelt) and my old office was steps away from the Riverwalk.  But man, that winter wind off the lake was absolutely miserable and some days terrifying to be out in. Walking to work during the Polar Votex of 2019 when it was like -20 to -30 degrees really sucked.

Still, I keep an eye on the development progress up there and am glad to see the Tribune Tower addition, One Central, Lakeshore East: Vista, Cirus, Cascade, Parcel I, Parcel O, etc. all still making progress. Maybe someday when we finally pay off all our student loans we'll move back.

It's been a few years since I've been to Chicago; it's looking good.

That Apple Store is an amazing piece of engineering; the roof looks paper thin.

I always wince when I see the Trump Hotel on the river; nice looking building at a great site, but, you know, it's got his name on it.

^Well, when he defaults on his loans someone else will put their name on it. His name is worth less every day.

I'll buy it and put my name on it. Too nice of a building to just sit there.

Or everyone on UrbanSTL contributes money and we buy it to establish our dominance over Chicago.

The St. Louis International Hotel? Where the restaurant serves only gooey butter cake, toasted ravioli, and four star thin crust pizza? And maybe "Arange" Vess?

Where'd You Go to High School Tower

Agree with you Chris, the weather from Nov - Apr is usually awful and Chicago is much closer to MSP than STL.

I used to make frequent intraday trips to Joliet back in the 2000's. There were many times in the winter and spring when I would leave Chicago with snow on the ground and temps in the 30's and arrive in STL to temps in the 50's/60's.

A major new addition to the Chicago skyline has received all of it's approvals. At 102 floors and 1422', the Tribune East Tower will become the second tallest in the city.

^ Very cool.  Speaking of cool Chicago projects, Sterling Bay will soon begin construction on a new bridge over the Chicago River as part of their Lincoln Yards mega development.  Will extend Dominick Street between Webster and North avenues about a mile or so.  The new bridge will have pedestrian and bike lanes too...in addition to rebuilt sections of the Riverwalk.

FWIW it received all approval late last spring.  Construction won't start until Q4 2021 if not 2022 at the very earliest.  And lots can change between now and then that could derail this project.  Just look at 1000M (1000 S. Michigan), which was approved and even started construction before being halted last winter. I still think it's only a 75% chance this gets built.

DataZ - Truth in Accounting

"Each of the city’s taxpayers is liable for $119,110 when debt is tallied for the city, county, state and other local governments such as schools and the Chicago Transit Authority."

City Combined Taxpayer Burden Report (pdf)

Keep in mind that these numbers are pre-Covid, in a city that is heavily reliant on the tourist/convention/airport revenue to service all of their debt obligations. Tax revenue which has of course now all but disappeared, while CTA, school, etc. debts are skyrocketing due to the pandemic...

About
Mission Statement:
To educate and empower citizens with understandable, reliable, and transparent government financial information.
Founded in 2002, Truth in Accounting believes truthful accounting is the key for citizens, legislators, and the press to clearly understand the truth about government finances. To be knowledgeable participants in their governments' financial decisions, citizens need accurate and complete financial information. Our work has focused on encouraging public entities to produce financial reports that are comprehensive, clear, and transparent; and informing the public of the importance of truthful accounting.
We offer comprehensive analysis of government fiscal data…
We analyze government accounting data from each of the 50 states and 75 most populous cities in the country to produce annual assessments of government finances. We use our proprietary methodology to cut through politicization and accounting tricks to show the true fiscal condition of each state and city, including the health of pension plans.  We are also expanding our efforts to provide truthful and transparent financial information about the federal government's financial condition.

… And we want you to explore the fiscal data on your own, too.
We also provide financial, demographic and other data for you to examine yourself through Data-Z (formerly State Data Lab). This resource enables citizens, the press, legislators, think tanks, and financial analysts to understand their governments’ financial condition and correlate that with data about the larger economic picture.

The Helmut Jahn-designed 1000M could come back to life next year as apartments instead of condos.  Unit layouts are currently being redesigned in an effort to refinance the project.  Everything is preliminary and there is no guarantee the project will be able to relaunch.

Studio Gang's Vista Tower has been rebranded as the St. Regis Chicago:

Work also continues on the 60 story Salesforce Tower:

Couple of big proposals out of Chicago today.
https://www.chicagotribune.com/columns/ ... story.html

First one at 525 S. Wabash would have just under 800 residential units and 314 hotel rooms.  Would replace an existing parking structure.

Second one at 640 W. Washington would be 47 stories and have about 413 apartments.  Would replace a surface parking lot along the Kennedy Expressway:

A few observations with this...
  1. It's the PwC Pennant Building stacked on top of an apparently brick tower portion.
  2. It wouldn't be Chicago without a freeway full of traffic and side streets that are mostly empty.
  3. The Kennedy Expressway, if I remember correctly, has several high rises and skyscrapers along it. This is turning into Chicago's version of Dubai's Sheikh Zayed Road. It's impressive, I'll give them that.
In all serious though, this looks good.

Macy’s will close it’s Water Tower Place store in Downtown Chicago. Leaving another large vacancy on the Mag Mile after Gap closed its flagship.
