Can we all just get along?

Stl Today - Webster Groves grapples with school boundary changes
The survey exposed thinly-veiled racism among some people who threatened to send their children to private schools or move away if they are rezoned to Givens, according to an anonymous survey of 1,600 residents released Wednesday.

“We are a younger couple who just had our first baby. Moving us to a different school that we did not choose feels like you are taking away the life we planned … My child is being used to make the district look better. I will leave this town if these changes are put into place,” reads one comment.

“White parents will revolt if we have a school with too many free and reduced lunch students, especially if their child has to attend.”

And, “By changing the districts so that Givens is almost primarily African American, the property values of homes in this area will decrease.”

Easy to say when it doesn't affect you. There's a reason people don't want to send their kids to these underpopulated schools. They are underfunded, understaffed and do not have the same community that these families were looking for. They bought their home with a clear plan for their future; this undercuts their plans and changes how their family will operate.

Quality of public education shouldn’t depend on what zip code you live. And we are talking about the ONE school district here, shouldn’t they all be funded and staffed the same since everyone is the district is paying the same.

Webster schools are neither underfunded nor understaffed.

I have a hard time feeling bad for anyone whose children have the privilege to attend Webster Groves schools. It's not like they're being suddenly forced to attend an unaccredited district, or move from their "safe neighborhoods". But, I can appreciate some of the more practical arguments, like distance, road crossings, etc. for some of the options.
