is this a thing? i thought the city was still losing population. And here's the problem: if all those people move into the central corridor while the north and far south side continue to deteriorate, the crime will not go down.

The city is still losing population, mostly on the north side. People are moving into the city now more than any other time within the last 60 or so years, but mostly within the central corridor and some in south city, but I'm not sure if it's enough (yet) to offset the continued north side loss. But what I'm saying is the biggest deterrent to people living in the city is the crime, so if the crime could be significantly decreased even more people would be moving in, perhaps back into neighborhoods that have suffered huge population loss. I'd rather the crime decrease and then lots of people move in, but I'd be happy with population increase regardless!

That’s a sad start to the new year. These shootings seem targeted to me, especially the ones in Benton Park. Hopefully the “Cure Violence” plan Lewis Reed has been touting will help reduce this. Starting 2020 off with 5 people murdered and another 5 shot isn’t good.

^You are correct. This type of crime is targeted, not at all random and drug &/or gang related.
While gang-bangers firing off 100 rounds in a residential area is a huge problem and threat to safety, these killings do not involve model citizens.
There were 3 killed in the car. The person in the backseat had a high-powered assault-style weapon. The 4th guy that ran was eventually caught down the street and shot. They were definitely caught up in some drug &/or gang activity and the perps were looking to take them out.

I didn't know those three murders were in Benton Park... I was walking along Cherokee Street yesterday, and, as I crossed Jefferson into Benton Park, I saw a fired 9mm bullet just lying on the sidewalk. It was a sobering punch in the gut, which made me realize that my beloved St. Louis is not so perfect. I'm fortunate enough to not experience this prevalent gun violence near my home in North Hampton, but damn, five people murdered within one day is utterly embarrassing.

lol.  I'm guessing you could find hundreds of those if you looked around a bit, as New Year's Eve was a couple days ago.

It’s always unfortunate that crime occurs at all, but it is even more unfortunate that certain drug deals, beefs and/ or disputes, that have absolutely nothing to do with a particular neighborhood, come to a head there. Something like this could happen in Ladue if the parties either meet there or randomly encounter each other there.

Moral of the story: where a crime occurs is not always a reflection upon the neighborhood.

Ex) Rolling gun battle that ends in Downtown STL by Busch Stadium during the NLCS.

Would you rather....

Have a year like

2003 when we had 53,000 total crimes and 74 murders

Or

2019 when we had 24,000 total crimes and 194 murders.


Ideally I’ll take 24,000 and 74 but that’s not an option in this question

I’m far more concerned about what’s going on in Australia than what’s going on here. Nearly half billion animals gone wiped away from infernos yet its the same sh*t every year everyday here when it comes to crime. I can’t get angry anymore nor sad all I can do is try my part in being a better person. Clearly these people don’t value life. I’ll comeback when they are done fighting their own wars to nowhere.

The real reason St. Louis doesn't want to be on the show The First 48 is not the murders - all the cities on the show have them - Atlanta, Miami, New Orleans, Dallas. The REAL reason they won't agree to be on the show is that they almost never solve the crime unlike the other cities. 0 for 8 so far this year I believe. That's the real shame and embarrassment they don't want the public to see.

Kim Gardner's policies have created a phenomenon called the "self-cleaning streets". Some occasional justice would be nice though.

It’s Gardner’s fault that police dept detectives can’t solve a murder and bring a charge to the CAO? (That’s if the officer at the scene is even able to bring a charge because of his or her own pending charge brings their credibility into question)

Who would you say is responsible for the very poor solve rate, if anyone? Maybe it's just dumb luck and a statistical anomaly.

I remember reading somewhere awhile back that for years the show COPS would ask the city if they could film here...the city always said no. Even though most other cities (big and small) have been on the show repeatedly for decades, including our sibling Kansas City. Kind of silly, I don't think it makes a difference to a reputation of a city. I mean Wichita has been on there a million times, but I don't think anyone would say "Let's not go to Wichita, I've seen it on COPS so I think it's dangerous." Everyone in the country knows St. Louis has a lot of crime, so it's not as if STL would be preserving a "stellar" reputation by refusing crime shows to tape here. I personally do see it as the city being embarrassed to be on these shows, but you'd think if you were that embarrassed about the crime rate you would actually do something about it instead of attempting to hide it as best you can. Idk.
