In my experience from working in college sports, it's just the practice to inflate the announced attendance by whatever you can: vendors, ushers, volunteers, birds nesting in the rafters . . . I used to hear the discussion about what to announce over headsets. I don't know that there's any real rhyme or reason to it. The sports marketing rep would ask the head of the ushers what the gate was, discuss the thing with his partner, and then pass the announcer a larger figure. Probably everyone does it a little differently. And it probably means absolutely nothing to any official statistic. I'm sure teams do what they can to inflate those too, but league reps probably keep some track of the number that actually shows up on the turnstiles . . . when there are actual turnstiles. Not sure how Busch keeps a count, but there's probably something for official records that has nothing whatsoever to do with what you see on the scoreboard at the game.
I think most teams do either paid attendance or tickets distributed for announced attendance. You usually here on the tv or radio there are X number paid. So that is why it can vary so much from who is there. Especially if they sold a bunch of season tickets then the team is bad and those people decide not to show up.symphonicpoet wrote: ↑Jul 31, 2017In my experience from working in college sports, it's just the practice to inflate the announced attendance by whatever you can: vendors, ushers, volunteers, birds nesting in the rafters . . . Absolutely a contributor, but BPV opened in 2014. Anecdotally, just saying Soulard crowds seems down this year.Chalupas54 wrote: ↑Jul 30, 2017Ballpark Villagesoulardx wrote: ↑Jul 30, 2017I think there's something to this actually. Pre/post game crowds in Soulard seem to be down this year.STLrainbow wrote: ↑Jul 29, 2017Speaking of events/vitality levels, I think we need to accept the very real possibility that Cards attendance will be measurably lower in the coming years. (Went to my first Cards game of the year on Wednesday -- I'd say compared to most around the league it was still a decent crowd but the lowest I've ever experienced. Crowd was announced at 37,000 but actual had to be much less and there were several upper deck sections completely empty.)
If Cards don't turn around things on the field and consistently miss playoffs it's only going to get worse and we could be back into something reminiscent of the Joe Torre era... the question for local biz, etc. would be how much of an impact the loss of say 750,000- 1,000,000 game-day attendees would be if that happens.

I don't want to make too much of this year's attendance but this is kinda what I'm getting at... chinks in the Cards attendance armor seem to be rather self-apparent this year and results on the field this year & next will either nip the problem in the bud or exacerbate things. Hopefully we won't find out, but it would be interesting to see how actual attendance would fare through the end of the season if the Cubs pull away in August and it becomes clear we're out of contention. If we're in contention in a four-way race with Cubs, Brewers and Pirates we got a great home stand wrapping up the season.eee123 wrote: ↑Jul 31, 2017Either way, there are huge discrepancies from announced to actual attendance. Just look at Thursday's crowd, where not one section is more than half full.

KMOV: Armed assaults on the rise in the Downtown West Neighborhood
KMOV wrote: According to the SLMPD report, there were 12 aggravated assaults involving guns by July of 2016. Since July of 2017, there have already been 32 incidents reported, that is a 166% spike in armed assaults for this neighborhood. "I'm not surprised at all. I think anyone who moves in this neighborhood knows what's going on. It's disheartening, but it is what it is," said Patrick O'Neill, who lives in the Downtown West Neighborhood.
But I also think the popularity of the bars west of Busch (Start Bar, Wheel House, Flying Saucer and now Tin Roof) are also pulling some crowds from Soulard. Those places have been super busy every time I drive by.soulardx wrote: ↑Jul 31, 2017Absolutely a contributor, but BPV opened in 2014. Anecdotally, just saying Soulard crowds seems down this year.
Then again every time I've been to Soulard recently, its been every bit busy as I remember. Went to Epic Pizza and iTap last night. Had to circle for 10 minutes before giving up and parking a two blocks away in the lot behind Social House.

How so? It states a simple crime stat and then interviews a few people who work/live in the neighborhood. Some of which say they're concerned and others not.True_dope wrote: ↑Aug 06, 2017This article reads more like an hit piece then any actual news.San Luis Native wrote: ↑Aug 06, 2017KMOV: Armed assaults on the rise in the Downtown West Neighborhood

Elliot Davis shared on Facebook that he is still surprised that the Millennium Hotel is sitting there empty. He also said that, "this is another city corner wasting away to nothing".
Tell him that he can make the change... As long as... He pays for it...
In all seriousness was downtown for dinner last night for the first time in a while - Non game night at 8:30 pm - east of Tucker had a good street crowd, bars and restaurants had good crowds, streets felt active and comfortable

For why?
Just curious. I'd like to get more detail on his experiences and would like to retain him as a renter. We've had a lot of success renting our loft since we moved to South City 5 years ago and ideally we'd keep it that way.urban_dilettante wrote: ↑Aug 08, 2017robertn42 wrote: ↑Aug 08, 2017i didn't put 2 and 2 together at first but I just clicked on the link and was delighted to realize that Patrick is my renter. ^ oh, okay. gotcha. i thought maybe you were gonna threaten to kill his dog if the next DT West review wasn't more glowing.
Ha. Not exactly my style. I was pretty involved when I lived in the neighborhood and have a vested interest is seeing it continue to succeed and grow.urban_dilettante wrote: ↑Aug 08, 2017^ oh, okay. gotcha. i thought maybe you were gonna threaten to kill his dog if the next DT West review wasn't more glowing.![]()

Maybe this has already been shared, but "Sen Thai Inc" had a liquor license pending at 1000 Washington. ![]()

Now that the 705 Olive Building and the 900 Block of Olive Street is underway we have several fewer abandoned buildings to deal with. Now all we need is the Chemical Building and Jefferson Arms underway. They will hopefully kick the developer of the Railway Exchange into high gear.
Not sure if the liquor license has been shared specifically but yes, the move was covered over on the Downtown Retail thread. Construction has been progressing nicely. While our downtown restaurant count may be declining, these restaurants to remain as visible as possible.
Is it possible for a developer to tackle the first floors of Chemical? Even if they didn't take on the whole project, that corner space is prime for retail. Brighten the corner. Pour new concrete, add flower pots, bike racks...Then maybe the renovation on upper floors would become more attractive.
It'd be awesome to see an apparel or drug store in the Chemical corner. Then the beauty shop and adjacent space could be hole-in-the-wall eateries. (Thinking of Thai 202 in CWE). This plaza just really needs some vibes and place-making. The disconnection and emptiness is what makes it rather quiet. Give the residents of Arcade, Roberts, Laclede, Lofts...a reason to come out of their buildings.

It would be great but let's also keep in mind all of the vacant retail within a couple blocks of Chemical. There really just isn't the retail demand right now.dylank wrote: ↑Sep 06, 2017Is it possible for a developer to tackle the first floors of Chemical?
