The General Services Administration’s move to Two Pershing Square early next year will be “one of the greatest things that has happened to downtown Kansas City in the last 75 years.”
Look at the KC leadership pushing for and amplifying the successes of their downtown. What has Clay and other Congressional reps done for downtown STL lately? Slay is passive while James, in KC, is aggressive.
Downtown St. Louis has had this kind of leadership synergy at one time. City officials and other leadership figures like Danforth, Clay etc. etc. touted downtown St. Louis regionally and nationally - and a lot happened as a result. A lot of money was poured into downtown.
Although things are not as bad as they had been, the current problem is that the synergy hasn't been sustained. It's not terrible, but local leadership and downtown boosters need to amp and ramp it up again, but it seems they are TIRED.
I asked before and I'll ask again............what is the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis doing? The organization was a lot more vocal and visible. Also, where are the REAL leaders that have enough balls to decry a move of thousands of public service jobs from downtown?
Downtown St. Louis has seen a lot of improvement over the last 15-20 years or so - and even with great projects currently underway - it is past time for downtown to have a strong second wind.
