State control of SLMPD needs to be put back in front of voters as a constitutional amendment in 2028

Well I would think publicizing a concern that was addressed and received no action would go a long way with getting home rule back.

Mayor Spencer will meet with President Green today to go over the mayors bill to spend the rams settlement on north city and downtown home ownership and infrastructure primarily
When will it be made public?dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Nov 19, 2025Mayor Spencer will meet with President Green today to go over the mayors bill to spend the rams settlement on north city and downtown home ownership and infrastructure primarily

Goal is to introduce it before the 12/12 BOA winter break

Mayor Spencer called on all of St. Louis' major companies to "have a footprint" downtown either in the form of offices, events, or buying building signage, at the Business Journal event at Ballpark Village.

Good for her. I'm hoping the replacement of Millennial Hotel will be the start of a return to the river movement for major HQs currently in the burbs. Not unlike Boston where company HQs are moving to the South Bay downtown from the distant suburbs, making that former moribund desert on the bay now the hottest area to live and work and dine in Boston. Our big companies should form a new high rise HQ district facing the Arch grounds and the River.Auggie wrote: ↑Nov 20, 2025https://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/new ... ntown.html

To say that Mayor Spencer has no influence on the SLMPD is ridiculous. If she tried to do something outrageous like cutting their budget or requiring officers doing traffic stops to not carry weapons, then she would be rightfully overruled. Encouraging more police presence or tactics in a specific area can still be done. The whole reason the state stepped in was because of the city far left progressives like Jones, Green and the like putting a greater emphasis on the criminals and not the victims or everyday residents.

Well so far the state involvement has produced poorer results than we had seen the last two years
Which is why we saw a 40% increase in homicides over Jones term, correct?southcitykid wrote: ↑Nov 22, 2025To say that Mayor Spencer has no influence on the SLMPD is ridiculous. My first downtown based job was in 2011 & on my first day my boss gave me a Downtown St.Louis branded gift card that can be spent anywhere downtown. We should bring those back; $25, $50, $100 and $250 values. Any company in the region can give it to their workers to support DT biz
This would be a low hanging fruit in Mayor Spencer’s call for more regional corporate business to support downtown with a presence and other things like hosting events and meeting downtown.

Interesting. I've been downtown since '99 and never heard of, nor seen these.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Nov 23, 2025My first downtown based job was in 2011 & on my first day my boss gave me a Downtown St.Louis branded gift card that can be spent anywhere downtown. I'd love to be able to give these to my employees as gifts.

I’m more publicly vocal but the wife does all the heavy lifting behind the scenes

When my office was downtown, it was convenient to use services there as well. Since my office moved, I have still tried to support the services I once used. That said, I got the email my office of Clarkson Eyecare was closing downtown at the end of the year. The are referring me to the West End office. My dental office remains.

i am confident that Thompson Coburn will do everything possible to stay downtown.

That Clarkson has been down there forever. Shame to see them go.
Glad to hear some optimism regarding TC!

Sucks about Clarkson. I used the downtown location. Their hours were kind of limited but I didn't expect to see them go. There was one experience there at my eye exam in Feb when a guy came in claiming he was robbed (if I had to guess it was during a drug deal) and then he was extremely belligerent on the phone with 911.
The Clarkson attendant did a great job of deescalating the situation but that shouldn't be something she had to do.
Anyway regardless of why they are closing I'll miss them there.
Downtown needs its services.

Losing Clarkson is a pretty big blow. Just one less chain retailer providing a necessary neighborhood service. Pretty bleak, still waiting for even a single big win downtown under this admin.

Let’s be fair she’s only been in office for 7 1/2 months or so once it’s been close to 2 years then we can start being criticalAuggie wrote:Losing Clarkson is a pretty big blow. Like I said. Clarkson had really limited hours downtown going back at least the last 2 years.
It's almost like we need a reverse of what Metropolis did back in the late 90s and early 2000s when there were more daytime businesses downtown but most restaurants and bars closed up at 5 pm.
Back then it was pub crawls to support the few that were open in the evening and encourage other businesses to open as well.

There’s a massive fire just right out of downtown near Chouteau’s landing I’m not sure which or what building it was I knew when I saw it there was no saving it.
