The Pageant is a great venue. It may be new and not "gritty", but the sound is great, they bring to town great acts and there is not a bad sight line in the house.

My main complaint with the place is that you can't drink on the main floor in the majority of the shows. BOO.

Sorry for three consecutive posts.

The Bluebird has some of the best sound in the city.

I must have been at a bad show with a new guy running the sound, but when I saw Catch 22 there a couple months ago it was very, very sad. I couldn't understand anything the singer was saying, and not because he can't sing. The sound was terrible.

Giving it another try this weekend for Mustard Plug, I hope it's better.

Speaks volumes about the club, Joe Edwards and the Loop. Congrats!

It was terrible to lose Mississippi Nights, Kennedy's, Furst Rock etc... but
The Pageant has more than picked up the slack. Great venue, one of the best in fact!

Totally awesome! Maybe this distinction will result in St. Louis becoming a destination for major acts. So many biggies pass us over, often in favor of smaller cities.

I wonder what these divestments mean for Joe Edwards. His businesses could be bleeding money and he has debts to pay, he could be retiring, or he could be acquiring a big pile of money to do something big.

It could be any of the above, but he is somewhere in the neighborhood of his late 70's, pushing 80 I'd guess. That is a lot of work to own all of those properties & businesses. I hope he has a couple of big projects up his sleave before he slows down. I'd like to see the Loop get back to it's more "Bohemian", artsy roots. More unique local shops & less chains. More music venues, big neon signs & STL-centric themed decor. That being said, I know Wash U owns a chunk & chains in some spots are better than vacancies.

Joe's wife passed away recently- maybe he's just taking a step back and slowing down.  That's just a hunch though.

I feel this though it seems like the Loop is becoming more of an asian area in terms of the businesses and that's fine with me.

Hope this means the Pageant gets more bookings. I have only been to one show there since the Factory stole the soul in the suburbs. That was a real blow to traveling acts playing in STL vs Chesterfield.

^I've also noticed that the Factory seems to be getting a lot of the shows that used to hit the Pageant. Joe Edwards sold to his partner Pat Hagin. He was already co-owner. No idea if he has big plans for the venue or will keep things status quo. I think there is room for both, but it sucks that our most unique area ( The Loop) is losing shows to a suburban venue in Chesterfield.

^Totally agree. I refuse to go to a suburban strip mall to see bands that are 20 miles from my home.

The Factory and Maryland Heights Amphitheater/Music Park have been absolutely horrendous for the music scene in the core of the city

Those venues pull tons of activity out of the core

^Not to mention the lame impression it must leave on touring acts and their fans coming into from out of town. Associating St. Louis with cornfields and gargantuan mutant strip centers is rather embarrassing.

I think it's funny how people talk about how downtown and the city generally is "embarrassing" as if hellscape suburbia isn't a complete embarrassment as well.

I listened to the 314 podcast where the developer talked about the venue design, and his goal was to make it ideal for performers. So, it might be that acoustics, artist-comfort, access...etc. are beating the Pageant.

There is also nothing worse than getting a tour t-shirt that says lists the show as "Chesterfield, MO" instead of St. Louis

Oh I know it’s so embarrassing…Most of the time Hollywood Amphitheater concert stuff will say St. Louis but posters, shirts, announcements, social media posts for concerts stopping at the Factory on tour will say Chesterfield, MO

When BEAT came to The Factory a couple years ago, Tony Levin posted on his blog that it was one of the best venues he’s ever performed at from the artist’s perspective. He’s played in everything from the tiniest clubs to arenas.

I will absolutely never drive out there for a show. I don't care who is playing.

I give riverport a bit of a pass as it’s been around a long time and there isn’t really another outdoor venue like that as an option.

Sure, but it was pretty unfortunately development even then

Still hoping that an outdoor amphitheater can eventually be built on the east riverfront (or just north of lacledes landing)

My biggest issue with The Factory is that they throw money at bands that would have completely or mostly filled The Pageant, but can only fill half of The Factory.  It makes it a pretty depressing experience.

The Factory has really crippled both The Pageant and Stifel Theater.

The Sovereign is getting Kurt Vile and the Violators in November. Let's hope they draw well and more artists with a fan base KV's size come to STL vs. the burbs.
