I think the Arcade would make the ideal location for a borders, right across from WU and on OPO square. I could also seeing them move into US (although I'd love for it to be in the CBD.

Yeah, you'd think they'd give St. Louis a try if they're willing to locate in downtown Detroit.

I don't know for sure, but I'm also inclined to think that Borders' headquarters in A2 may have had made a difference in their willingness to locate at Campus Maritus. Obviously I was exaggerating earlier, because I think they'll come to downtown St. Louis at some point in the next few years. I'm just very impatient!

I think the OPO square would be absolutely perfect for a bookstore. I highly doubt they'd open in US--too distant and virtually moribund.

But while we're talking about the Dillard's building, it too would make a fantastic spot for an uberbookstore. Huge first floor retail presence. Would be great.

I can't wait for this building to come on line--definitiely a "bridge" bulding, and good looking to boot.

Anybody have any idea how they are going to replace the gaping holes in the facade once the bridge comes down? It would be extremely expensive to replace the stone and terra cotta, and faux materials would be obvious, I think, only a couple of stories above the sidewalk. I seriously doubt that any of the original material was saved, but who knows, maybe Casilly or one of his buddies has it.

Totally off topic but remember when a B. Dalton or was it Waldenbooks was located at Olive and 8th in the Arcade building? I believe they then moved St.Louis Centre when that opened.

Yeah, I do remember that. Seemed St. Louis Centre sucked all the street retail into one place leaving vacancies all over DT.

I noticed yesterday that the original columns are a part of the below street level MetroLink station. Maybe they will make an entrance directly into the building from the station?

The bookstore in St. Louis Center survived nearly til the end and was very busy. I would think the demand for a large bookstore with a cafe would be a huge hit in downtown-- especially right at a Metro station.

Totally. I used to shop at the Waldenbooks in St. Louis Centre and at the B. Dalton in Union Station before they closed - and the B. Dalton at Hampton Village too, for that matter. We need something.

I will say that the new library in the Old Post Office is pretty cool. Lots of good books, DVDs and music.

When we drove by last week, my wife suggested to me that the Laurel is living up to its name- in other words- Pyramid is resting on its laurels.

I've been by two or three times in the last week, and I haven't seen any work in progress. For awhile, it seemed like there was steady progress on the first floor. Hopefully they'll at least have an information office open for the fall downtown loft tour.

There have been a lot of BSI trucks parked behind the Dillard's building and it looks like construction on the first floor is back in full swing. A lot of the windows are either new or the black paint has been scraped off, so you can see inside. Glass doors are being installed on some offices and there is a ramp installed inside from the corner of 7th & Washingon. Looks like this will be the new entrance.

Glad to hear that. I need to check it out sometime. The lack of a larger bookstore* in the city is one of my biggest gripes, and I still think the ground floor of the Stix/Dillard's/Laurel would be the best space for a Borders or B&N IMHO.

Now there's a plywood "box" covering the windows at the corner of 7th and Washington...

I noticed an ad in the St. Louis "Live" magazine that said there would be a "luxury loft tour" in mid-October (they mentioned the exact date but I can't remember it now...I'll check it out and post it later) for five downtown lofts:

Arcade

syndicate

Robert's Lofts

Ballpark Lofts

The Laurel

That would seem to indicate that a model unit will be finished by that time for the Laurel unless all they'll have is a show room at that point.

Anyone heard more on this?

You mean the skybridge that was supposed to be torn down after the end of the 2006 Rams season?

Imagine in the Arcade building, sitting in a reading chair set inside one of those beautiful bay windows overlooking the old post office, enjoying a coffee while previewing a new book or reading the paper.

My vote is for the arcade.

They haven't even broken ground yet and I think the lofts on this tour will all have display models, although I'm not sure about the Laurel yet.

The Laurel IS supposed to have the display open. Last word from a guy with Pyramid is that the display is well under way now, and so will have no problem making the october deadline. The display will be on the first floor though, right behind the sales center.

I wonder if Pyramid is having a Ad Agency or Design firm do their work now? It definitely looks better. I know that Arcade stuff was done by Toky and all that stuff looks great.

The only thing is...the bay windows of the Arcade will be retail space only. There will be none in the residentail units. The Alexa on the other hand will have bay windows...except the bay windows will be in the kitchen/dining areas & the unit I saw, will not have much room for a reading chair. Still looking for my perfect place. Have you found one yet?
