Was telling my brother about it. The darned kid got his doctorate in Indiana, so he figures it requires an Indiana reference. He was sadly disappointed. He has drunk the Hoosier kool-aid. :D

We need 100 more of these metal and neon signs all over the city. I'd go there.

I used to live right up the block on Tholozan. Something tells me this place won't be nearly as hoosier as the previous tenants. Love the sign. Will definitely check it out.

Southtown Pub wasn't hoosier, it was basically people born 1980-1990 who grew up in south city.....I watched almost all of the Cardinals playoff games there or Peppers from 2011-2016

^The $10 (?) buckets during local sporting events was phenomenal. Hope the Golden Hoosier brings back that promo. Essentially free beer 👏

You're right. I believe I'm thinking of the Black Derby Saloon.

A coffee shop is opening up next door at 3701 South Kingshighway. It's called Pipers Tea and Coffee. They currently have a location in Paducah Kentucky. Opening Summer 2021.

Correct, it was on the corner and I would always walk by it and see about 1-2 guys at the bar that looked like they were on their last dollar.

More about the Garcias' ambitions for the area.

"Their vision is to create a new district called the Crown District, which stretches from Magnolia to Eichelberger and will hopefully bring new life to blocks of historic buildings".

This family/business seems to get it right. I like what they've done in my neighborhood of Fox Park and more so on S. Kingshighway. If I had blonde hair I'd wear a Golden Hoosier shirt every day. That sign is a nice addition even if the Budweiser one was removed. Off topic, but those Budweiser metal and neon signs are steadily disappearing in my time here.

^Maybe Garcia has looked at the Joe Edwards model and said "We can do that!" Snap up underutilized properties with potential, stimulate demand, selectively sell for a profit, wash, rinse, repeat. I could stand to see the Sultan of the South Side join the Duke of Delmar. (Preferably somewhere around Grand and Delmar at the court of the Monarch of Midtown. Where they can preside over the trial of the Nuisance of the North.)

I had no idea how HUGE they've gotten, go to the website and see the roster of real estate agents....

It's really unfortunate Garcia wasn't around when the Southtown Famous-Barr store closed in 1991.  If they had been, I have a strong feeling that beautiful building with his expensive detailing would have been creatively reused/repurposed and that insipid strip mall would never have seen the light of day.

^I wish he'd been there to save the Granada. Yeah, we lost a lot. But he seems to have a good head for how to turn that around.

The Granada on Gravois? Or do you mean the Avalon on Kingshighway?

Granada was beautiful but once he storm got it, it was done for. Surprising since East St. Louis hasn't torn down their somewhat similar (but even more beautiful) example despite it being in horrible shape and in East St. Louis.

I hated to see the Avalon go. Demolition by neglect. Then just demolition.

^I meant the Granada on Gravois. And sure, I'm aware of the roof collapse. I'd gotten the impression that there was some substantial degree of neglect involved in that collapse. And some pretty far gone things have been brought back. I have some pictures from inside the Sun back in the day. The roof didn't collapse . . . but the ceiling sure as snot did. I can't imagine saving the Granada would have been terribly much more difficult. You'd have had to act quicker, but many things are possible with money and determination.

The Avalon was a shame, but the real loss right there was the Southside Famous for my money. And I spend too much time worrying about the Majestic, the Virginia, and the Palladium. And the German House too, for that matter.

BTW, the link to "the crown district" is the first I'd seen of this branding effort from Garcia.
