Welcome to St. Louis! What are you studying?
My PhD is in Computer Science. I guess you can't welcome me to STL yet, since I'm only moving in August

Welcome to the forums and we hope that you enjoy our communities: both physical and digital. If you like urban planning and haven't found it yet Compton and Dry's Pictorial St. Louis of 1875 is an utterly fantastic piece of history. I enjoy going through counting windows, comparing rooflines, and looking for hints of what was and what's still there.
Anyway, good luck!

^Haven't seen that before. That's a nice version. I'll file it away for future reference.
Hello everyone! I graduated from Mizzou this spring and moved to St. Louis for a job downtown. I’ve been aware of this forum for awhile and have checked it from time to time, but now that I live in St. Louis, I figured I would get more involved. St. Louis has been my favorite city ever since I was a kid, so I am thrilled to be here. Something about the architecture, the people, the history, and the river gives me energy that few other places do. It’s also clear that it has so much more potential. It seems like a really transformative period for St. Louis so I’m excited to see how the city changes over the next few years and I look forward to learning from all of you as well as sharing some of my ideas!

Welcome aboard CG! You're in good company among other Columbia transplants. (Or transplanted transplants? Since so many of us that stayed in BoCoMO for a time didn't start there. UMC is something of an attractive nuisance. They should build a fence around that thing to keep arty types like me from drowning there without business savvy supervision.)
Anyway . . . welcome! (From a fellow Mizzou grad. Assuming music counts.)

It's me again, TheWayoftheArch (Will). Version 2.0. Disappeared for ~10 years and now back in the mix - though unable to recover my old account. Missed this forum, good to see the passion lives.

^ I thought I recognized that user name somewhere! Though I've only been around here since mid-2018...I have perused some old threads.
Either way...welcome back!!!

Bumping this since a few new accounts have popped up recently. Poster, lurkers, and temp visitors alike, feel free to introduce yourself. Say as little or as much as you'd like. We're pretty chill around here. You could post 4 paragraphs of your life story and chances are, most of us would probably read and/or respond.

So, what brings you here?
When I got married at an embarrassingly young age, my wife and I had wanted to live downtown. Instead, we raised a couple little jerks in the county for some years. We're getting back to those old ideas these days.
What part of the STL are you from?
I grew up in Jefferson County near Hillsboro, MO. I only ever came downtown a few times a year to see the Cards play and listen to my parents talk about what a hell-hole it was down there.
How old are you?

What do you do, or study?
I'm a programmer
What do you want to learn about St. Louis?
The first lease we took out in June is at the Pointe 400 building at 400 S. 4th St. So, I'm specifically interested in the developments currently under way down on 4th behind the Broadway Oyster Bar. I will single-handedly drink that beer garden into a sustained business model if it gets up and running soon. Such a great location for me...
Other than that, we plan to learn all we can about St. Louis while we're here. In the first 6 months down here we've managed to do all the touristy stuff that you never do when you're "from here". Walking architecture tours, gaping at the mosaics in the Basilica, and otherwise wandering around...
If there's anything I can do to help out with anything feel free to ask. I have worked from home for a long, long time so I have a pretty flexible schedule during the day.

The walking architecture tours and gaping at the mosaics are always high on my recommendation list.
Welcome aboard and I hope you enjoy downtown. I grouse about the county sometimes, but we're all in it together. We could use more folks who can bridge the divides and speak to folks on all sides. I hope you enjoy what you see here on the forums.

Hi, I'm a 27 year old Urban Planner from Perth Western Australia. Very interested to get a bit more of an understanding of how the system works in St Louis. I'm hoping to visit some time in 2022.
Welcome.
St. Louis is indeed an interesting study in "how the system works", in that the region is so fragmented that multiple governing bodies must find a way to work together to get anything done. Needless to say, it really holds us back at times.

Trying to think what thread we've started that would be the most interesting from a "how the STL system works" standpoint hah! Anyone have any ideas?
^ Start on page one of the Merger/BT thread and read it until the end lol.

^Ohh! . . . Valid point. But if you're going to see how the system works sometimes an investigation of how it doesn't is extremely useful. Better Together definitely needs a solid Mayday: Urbanism Crash Investigation.

Thanks for your suggestions, I had started on that merger thread yesterday. I understand that St Louis county and St Louis City are seperate government entities as well as Clarence County. From what I understand there was a proposition to merge together but it was unsuccessful. I'm curious to know what level of involvement the state government has in town planning in MO and what decisions are made by the city administration vs what decisions are made by planning boards and elected officials.
Hey everyone, I moved up to STL from the Southeast for law school and am going to stick around after graduation. I've always wanted to be involved in/informed about the development scene in whatever city I settled in, and I've been a long-time lurker, so I decided to join.
