"Safari-like" experience coming to the STL Zoo's North County Campus:

"The 425-acre complex is four times the size of the Zoo campus in Forest Park. The property has a multitude of wildlife habitats, include 13 lakes and ponds, woodlands and rolling grasslands.

The zoo says its North Campus will have the first large-scale safari type experience that is located within a major metropolitan area. It will also house a conservation and animal science center."

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this. I couldn't find an existing dedicated thread.

Really excited for this. Did they ever figure out funding?

The was I understand it (could be wrong). Any county that agrees to pay the extra tax can get in free. So far only St. Louis County has. So at this time city residents are not included.

Saint Louis Zoo unveils name for North County campus
https://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/new ... 6#cxrecs_s
The Saint Louis Zoo has named its 425-acre north St. Louis County property Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park.

The name hits on three aspects Zoo officials say the new campus will illustrate: wildlife, conservation and public experience.

The North County campus will offer an interactive experience for guests including safaris and even camping. The Zoo has conducted public experience studies and surveys with tourists and area residents, and will continue to seek input as it finalizes the public experiences at the new campus. The Zoo also will work with necessary authorities to evaluate property zoning, traffic studies, perimeter fencing and a potential pilot pasture in the near future. The organization also is mapping the native animals and plants that live in and around the property, including the presence or absence of invasive species and diseases with a potential threat to Zoo animals, officials said.
............................
The new campus also will feature the Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center where conservationists will work to sustain populations of endangered species, conduct research and engage in conservation programs. The center is key to the Zoo’s work to advance wildlife conservation efforts, officials said.
............................
“Together, the public experience and the Kent Family Conservation and Animal Science Center will merge applied science with intriguing dynamic visitor interactions – both are cutting-edge and unique,” said Winthrop Reed III, chairman of the St. Louis Zoological Park Subdistrict Commission. “We believe this is the first facility of its kind in the world and will doubtless be a game-changer for endangered species as well as for north St. Louis County and the region.”

The Zoo also will study the native animals and plants that live in and around the North County property.

St. Louis Zoo lining up financing for North County safari park
https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/gov ... c3c52.html
The St. Louis Zoo will ask a state financing board Tuesday for approval of a $135 million borrowing package that will jump-start development of a new outdoor animal park on 425 acres in north St. Louis County.

The bonds issued by the Missouri Development Finance Board would be combined with more than $100 million in funds from the taxpayer-supported zoo and private money to develop WildCare Park.

Will the St. Louis Zoo have predators like lions or cheetahs at the WildCare Park?

My gosh, I hope they do.

Regardless, this place looks like it has the potential to be really special.

To answer my own question, no, it's not likely that St. Louis Zoo WildCare Park is going to house predators, at least initially.

Animals that might call WildCare Park home:
  • Giraffe
  • Grevy’s zebra
  • Greater kudu
  • Addax
  • Bongo
  • Roan antelope
  • Somali wild ass
  • Przewalski’s horse
  • Scimitar-horned oryx
  • Waterbuck
  • Nile lechwe
  • Banteng
  • Gazelle (various species)
  • White rhino
  • Eland
  • Sable antelope
  • Bactrian camel
  • Ostrich

^ Nice,

I have to admit streaming is awesome when you need to catch up your teenager on movie series that literally stretch decades with same actors, from Top Gun to Jurassic Park.   Just remember, you don't have to be faster then the predator.  Just faster then the person next to you and or hope a dirt bike is conveniently nearby when you on an island and or touring in an European City

With all the packs of stray dogs roaming North County, I wouldn't be surprised if some predators do find their way into the park.

Glad to see from the renderings that they intend to repurpose at least some of those mid-century buildings from the pipe-fitters campus.

It still bothers me that only County residents will be able to go to St. Louis Zoo WildCare Park for free.

I hope City residents get a major discount.

Did the city vote on it and turn it down? I can’t even remember if it got that far.

Not sure if they turned it down or not. Could be a case of city politicians not putting it on the ballot. Either way, the County is the only one paying so they’ll be the only ones getting free admission.

The zoo did not seek to put it on the ballot in the City:

Proposition Z, as the ballot initiative is known, will appear on the St. Louis County ballot on November 6. However, the zoo will not pursue a sales tax in the city at this time, in light of “other issues St. Louis city is currently addressing,” Bonner said. Among other issues, the city is having difficulties carting away garbage from city neighborhoods.
https://www.stlamerican.com/news/local_ ... 1e127.html

Then this past summer, officials in St. Louis City (where taxes for the police and fees for garbage collection have already increased recently) dissuaded the zoo from pursuing a sales tax there, at least for the time being.

I am definitely open to voting for Prop Z were it to come for a vote in the City.
