The kevin Slaton show is the only thing more infuriating than the StLtoday.com forums. What a class act!

I used to listen to Slaton when I was stuck in traffic on 70. For as long as you could stand it, he had many of his facts right, some of the time, but then he would abuse his own co-hosts and give many callers a beat-down on the radio; and of course he would rant.

. . .

I'm no football coach, but if I were the new coach of the Rams, for training, I'd pack the team into old school-busses, (each day) and drive them down to the old Pruitt-Igoe site, and, with hand-brush-clearing-tools and lime, make the players themselves clear away a training field and mark off the grid; then conduct harsh training sessions in this austere place; and do it with no authorization from the City; and allow local people and kids to gather and to observe the team's practices; and let the cops show up; and the TV stations; and the sports-mouths; and practice in the rain, and the sun; and the heat; and on Saturday and Sunday. With the arch, downtown, and the whole urban panorama of St. Louis to surround this rustic training field, like a great dish, in magnificent proportions, and canopied with the sultry blue dome of a cloudless summer sky. Ooooh.

Get them out of Earth City.

I'm very excited about Coach Spags. I had been in favor of hiring Leslie Frazier, but part of the reason for that was because I didn't think the Rams would buck up to pay Spagnuolo. This is a great hire, and I'm already excited about next year.

Hopefully he can get his staff in place quickly and move on to focusing on the draft and picking up some free agents. Teams can turn things around so quickly in today's NFL that it's not totally unreasonable to expect a major improvement in 2009. And of course, with that big contract, he'll be under pressure to turn things around fast, but I think he's more than capable of doing it.

GO RAMS!

Gruden would've been my pick. After suffering through the Linehan fiasco I would've liked someone who's actually been an NFL head coach before. That said, Spagnuolo was easily the best of the finalists for the job, so hopefully he'll turn things around...preferably ASAP!

But have you seen Gruden's record since he won the Super Bowl? Not good.

I know- I figure there's always the chance that Gruden and other (former) head coaches might just need a change of venue. OTOH, even the most successful head coaches have got to start somewhere, and assistant coaches or coordinators with recent success in those positions can make the difference as a head coach. I mean, I'm pretty sure the Arizona Cardinals aren't the least bit sorry that they went with Ken Whisenhunt. 8)

I do think the Rams may have really picked the best out of the crop available. Spagnuolo has already generated a level of excitement that I haven't seen in, um, I forgot the last time I was genuinely excited about the Rams' chances for the future. :)

Looks like Spags has already hired his offensive and defensive coordinators, and a special teams coach is next.

Nevermind the fact that only one HC in the history of EVER has won titles with different teams, and it's been nearly 40 years since somebody did it (Weeb Eubank back in the day).

Spagnuolo is a solid choice. The funny thing is that the Rams defense actually has a VERY bright future. Lots of good, young talent there that just horrendously underachieved last season. Carriker, Long, Otogwe, Witherspoon - SOLID. It's the offense that I'd really be worried about. Holt is getting old fast, Jackson is a malcontent and running behind one of the worst O-lines in football. Pace is retiring soon, Barron is a bust, Incognito a basket case, and our LG is another overpriced failure - can't even remember his name. And oh yeah, Marc Bulger is a $17m albatross. Jettison him STL - as fast as you can!

I wouldn't call Baron a bust. He's still prone to a ridiculous amount of false start penalties, but he was fairly solid last year. Jacob Bell - the guard - played horribly in the first 3/4s of the season as he played through some injuries, but improved significantly at the end of the season. He's super athletic, so if he can bulk up in the offseason (his weight was down in the 280s last year), he might end up being decent. I wouldn't write him off just yet. Incognito can hit the road. I'd like to see us draft a good center. Cal has a really good one who would be a great fit for the Rams.

I think Holt can still get it done, but his role within the offense will have to change. Avery seems poised to be our #1 receiver - he needs to run his routes better - and hopefully Burton will emerge as the #2. Drew Bennett has got to go - he may be the worst free agent signing since the team came to St. Louis.

I didn't see this posted, but here is an article on the Rams site about the new changes coming to the dome this fall.

Here is a link to the article:

Notice the new premium seating on the floor mentioned in the article. And also notice removed advertising on the ends to make way for new bars and premium lounges.

And here is a link to pictures of the new Clarkson Jewelers Club:

And to the new Legends Suite

Anyone see the pre-season opener? Anyone else feeling optimistic yet? I didn't think I could say this after the last two seasons but I'm on-board. I'm buying into Spagnuolo and the new team attitude.

My main concern is Bulger's mistakes under pressure. Held on to the ball too long during the three plays he was sacked last night. He doesn't seem to know what to do when his first option isn't open or see defenders closing on him.

Trent Green was excellent for Fox in the booth. He was really staying in the moment and pointing out the significance of each drive for the Rams. It was a nice change to so many guys who get off topic and have no real analysis.

Looking forward to the season.

That was a fun game! Nice to start of the Spags era with a W.

You're totally right about Bulger, he needs to get rid of the ball. As I understand it, the West Coast Offense is based on making quick reads and getting rid of the ball quickly.

Dallas Stadium Video Screen:

There is no physical reason why the Edward Jones Dome would not accomodate a slightly smaller version of this that would hang below the grid, but would be no lower than the bottom of this video board. Although a punter hit the board in pre-season, the NFL OK'd the height as-is.

The only complication I could see would be the grid of lights that are lowered whenever there is an auto-show or home-show in the dome. That seems solvable.

The dome needs to consider adding this to become just the second stadium in the NFL to have such a board, (they could have been first) in order to muddle the argument that the Dome is not in the upper tier of stadiums in the NFL.

^I think I'd MUCH rather have that nice big opening in the roof. Look at how it lights up the place. Another thing to consider, in order to bring more light into the dome would be adding windows around the top like the Dallas stadium. Look at all of that natural light. I can assure you, that all of that natural light would create the 'bright' atmosphere everyone is looking for. Then it will lose the 'dungeon' label. That jumbotron is cool, but I have not seen the screens they added. They may be sufficient.

We already have new HD video boards, and the larger one is now the 2nd largest in the NFL. They are very nice and cool.

Next Step is to get more light in, (windows, moon roof, retractable roof, or rip it off and weatherize the rest of it).

Oh yeah, and paint the seats a color other than red. That really ticks me off!

I like the changes so far, and with a better team it will only get better in the dome.

That Dallas video board it horrible. I would hate to be at the stadium trying to watch a game with that thing dominating the atmosphere.

I was at the preseason game last night and sat in the South End Zone. The new wide LED video screen is so bright, I found myself watching the screen rather than the little dim guys on the field that I paid to see.

I could swear that the field lights were a lot brighter at Arrowhead stadium at the night pre-season game I attended there a few weekends ago. I think it would help the dome a lot if the Rams just installed much brighter lights to make the field seem more like daytime. I find that I am more awake in the morning if I just turn on all the lights in my West-facing kitchen, as if the sun were shining in. Its psychological.

Look at the contrast between the big LED screen and the field in this video:

I'm still calling for 5-11 or 6-10 for this season. But I have a feeling the Rams will be "in" more games and that is will be somewhat more exciting to watch them play this year.
