Seattle would have racial tension if it actually had black Americans living in it
Yeah, this has always bugged me too. All those uber-hip, ultra-"progressive" cities in the Northwest seem to think they know the secrets to racial harmony, without having to actually deal with it. Portland, especially, seems to think they're so "woke", yet they're one of the most white-dominated cities in the country.

" Portland does remain a predominantly white city, although the percentage has dropped over the last fifty years. In 1940, 98% of the population was white. In 2009, Portland still had the 5th highest percentage of white residents among the 40 largest metropolitan areas in the country, while a study in 2007 found that Portland's urban area has the highest percentage of white people in the United States."

Not a ton of substance to this article but it was nice to be mentioned.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s refreshing to read an outsider’s perspective of St. Louis that doesn’t dwell on the doom-and-gloom or isn’t a paraphrased press release written by the CVC. It’s also cool that our urban appeal is recognized along with other classic legacy cities that are St. Louis’s true peers, and not random comparisons with Indianapolis or Columbus, etc.
agreed; Twin Cities not as much, but Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Cincy for sure. All great and prefer them and STL immensely over the Nashvilles and Indys of the world

BPV Shooting made the AP wire, meaning it will likely be reported on during morning newscasts nationwide.

A bit random, but on a more positive note than why St. Louis was in the national spotlight recently, I just yesterday saw a gorgeous video of the Arch at dusk facing towards Illinois used as one of Adult Swim's video bumps. I always felt like St. Louis was more than a pretty enough sight to be used in one of their video bumps, and I'm glad it finally happened. Kind of wish they'd have shown the cityscape at night as opposed to the Illinois side, but the end result was still quite nice. I'll see if I can't dig up the actual bump.

Saw this article on old train stations turned into hotels (oddly enough tweeted out by Frontier Airlines).

A couple paragraphs and pics about Union Station.

With the Greitens Trial beginning next week, a lot of regional and national media will be in St. Louis. CNN, MSNBC, Fox, and CBS will also be sending correspondents. It's really cool IMO to see this play out in St. Louis, we might as well be the capital, lol.

One thing I noticed while browsing facebook comments, some people in KC are 'annoyed' that this is all happening in STL. One comment in particular, "KC must not even exist. Everything in MO revolves around St. Louis."

Then they really don't understand this case. Meanwhile people in STL are annoyed that city resources are being spent on this (myself not included).

Although it was kind of funny when a friend and I were driving down Tucker and we heard about the trial on NPR's new update at the top of the hour... while we were passing Civil Courts (with news vans out front).

It was very discourteous to the Good People of Kansas City that the Governor chose to commit his crimes in the City of St. Louis.

This is a little old at this point. Completely missed it. But I don't see it on here apologies if it's already been posted:

An odd little photo/video essay from the Washington Post on the Mississippi. St. Louis is only mentioned in passing, but there are some recognizable shots: Chain of Rocks, Merchants, Alton, the Clark Bridge. Generally a neat little educational story of the sort you might show class of younger kids. From March 14, 2018.

Found this article that mentions the startup community here.

By 2027, half the U.S. population will be freelance. If cities focus on that, attracting independent workers and startups suddenly seems a lot more important than, say, courting Amazon.

Al Roker will be recording with the Today Show from 6:00 - 8:00 a.m. tomorrow at the new entrance to the Arch museum.
I think they want people to make signs and whatnot but that sounds like a lot of work.

^Good tip about the comments. I've never seen such reasonable, articulate responses to a news article. The WP must filter out the riff raff.

Interesting opinion piece. I liked that he delved into some of the deeper issues with national expansion presented in the museum. But I think typical East Coast bias creeps in with his parting comment “hollow to the core”. It is something he would probably never say about the Washington Monument or Statue of Liberty where most of his readers live.

I hear a lot of foreign languages from visitors at the Arch - more than I hear East Coast accents. I wish the Museum had featured the international aspects of the Louisiana Purchase a bit more. The first New World slave revolt in Haiti tied up Napoleon’s troops leading him to abandon plans to move the troops to New Orleans. If that revolt had not happened, would we be speaking French? That may have been in the museum somewhere, but I don’t recall seeing it.

FWIW, the writer of the piece used to be the classical music critic for the Post Dispatch.
