Let's hope so...
A ton more info is available in the St Louis Lambert thread.
I follow that thread andt to my knowledge there's nothing concrete in the works, right? My employer mentioned that there has been talk of a Frankfurt route for years now.

Locally, St. Luke's Hospital has agreed to purchase Des Peres Hospital from Tenet. Not quite a massive merger or anything, but good to see a local (and last independant hospital) expanding.

^This acquisition will put Energizer solidly back in the Fortune 1000 for the first time since the split with Edgewell (which has remained in the Fortune 1000 since the split).

Saw this article on Arconic wanting to move out of NYC to a more cost effective location. I think I know a city with plenty of building space for a Fortune 500 company.

Since the Monsanto-Bayer deal is getting closer to being done, what is the general feel amongst Monsanto employees? Is there panic, some minor/major concern? Is there a feel that Bayer will gut many jobs such as accounting, finance, marketing, etc.... ? I have been wondering if there are any guesses as to how many jobs could be lost. I wouldn't think there will be any gain in the long run, but you never know.

I don't know if I'd call it panic, and it's anecdotal, but I believe there is some real concern that redundancies will be found and eliminated among non-research positions. And maybe even among those, I'm not sure.

Other than perhaps an A-B effect where these people go on to create startups, I see very little chance this will prove positive for St. Louis.

They still seem to be hiring a lot of people. I get calls about jobs there all the time.

^ That may be the case but I have a really bad feeling about this buyout. There will always be "synergies". Hopefully Bayer sells off more units of redundancy in order to get the deal to go through. Then the hope would be that those units would remain here. If there are any Monsanto employees on the forum with some insight on the future of the STL operation, please chime in.

Shoe retailer Caleres is relocating a number of corporate positions from out of state to its Clayton headquarters.

The company recently closed the Minneapolis office of shoe brand Allen Edmonds, which affected 17 employees. Another 17 corporate central office support and marketing positions were also affected in Port Washington, Wis. All of those employees were offered the opportunity to relocate to St. Louis or take new roles within the company, said Malcolm Robinson, Caleres’ division president—men’s and international.

Not that 24 jobs is anything crazy but I thought it should be noted.

Cigna buying Express Scripts.

http://www.stltoday.com/business/local/ ... 07e4a.html

On the good side, there could be a lot of St. Louisans with spare cash. I think they are paying the equivalent of about $100 per share or more in cash and shares of the new merged company.

Damn. Too bad. It seems like ever since George Paz stepped down as CEO that the growth strategy stalled and that they've been in a holding pattern, basically waiting for this.

Can anyone chime in, with expertise in the industry, how this impacts the employees based here in St. Louis? I understand that these two corporations compliment each other, so that is a plus. However, with the combined HQ in Conn. that does not bode well for employees that work in areas where overlap or 'synergies' can be found. Obviously, when a corporation spends $67 billion, there will be a need to make cuts somewhere. I expect there to be job cuts in St. Louis, in the typical areas (Upper management, legal, accounting, finance marketing etc.), probably some forced to relocate to the combined HQ. We are not only going to lose some jobs, but we are also losing our largest Fortune 500 company and the prestige that comes along with having multiple Fortune 500 companies. We are losing Monsanto and now Express Scripts. Hopefully, Cigna decides to invest in the operation and eventually, this doesn't sting so bad.

Why wouldn't they move the HQ here? It's so much cheaper than Connecticut, and we have a wide variety of cities that employees can choose from to find the best fit for them.

^It has already been reported that the combined HQ will be in Conn.

Express Scripts will remain HQ'd here. We've heard that before.... ie....AB-INBEV- NYC.... :(

What really sucks about this is the fact that we got the news about Amazon adding 1500 jobs yesterday and USS bringing back 500, then this. Seems like we take steps forward, then steps back.
That's business for ya...

Hartford is a major hub for the insurance industry, including health insurance (Aetna is also there). And Hartford is a relatively inexpensive city, but still convenient to Boston and NYC.

WOW. Shocking. Completely unexpected, but not surprised. Really hoping that the damage is not severe. Another HQ loss for St Louis.

On a side note, would really like for Sheila Sweeney to aggressively go after another corporate fish in a smaller community nearby.

Obviously the loss of F500 companies is a drop in prestige but it would be great to see a hard analysis of what's been the actual economic impact on Saint Louis region... e.g impact on the jobs head count. Impact on corporate support for community initiatives and non-profits would be another interesting area.

GoneCorporate probably has much better color on the odds here, and has stated that he/she was long ESRX with the expectation of them being bought out, but I don't think it is a forgone conclusion that there isn't significant regulatory response to this tie up. There has been in the past few years. With healthcare expenses continuing to explode higher as a percentage of GDP are fewer, much larger companies controlling ever more parts of the healthcare process going to lead to lower costs? I know PBMs haven't been political favorites as of late, so that may have something to do with it.
