The All Star lot would be an interesting choice too (SW of Busch Stadium)

Might have to build on top of some railroads but it would be possible. It would synergize with Busch when it comes to development and activity and still have easy metrolink access. Plus it's not like that lot is ripe for other development considering the giant elevated highway next door.

My location preferences ranked for a new arena:

1) Current Post Office as db pictured above.
2) A "Washington Ave" location. There's no good option though. The best I can see is something in a super block of 14th/MLK/Tucker/Lucas. Either there or 11th/MLK/9th/Lucas.
3) The Kosciusko option as an extension of gateway South. 7th/Marion/2nd/Lafayette. Not good though as it loses Metrolink connectivity.

Looking at current NHL arenas under construction or recently opened, these are the footprints.
  • Flames: 625 ft x 700ft
  • Islanders: 650ft x 600ft
  • Redwings: 600 ft x 550ft
  • Oilers: 750ft x 450ft
Recently opened NBA arenas:
  • Clippers: 800ft x 475ft (oval shaped)
  • Warriors: 625ft x 675ft (oval shaped)
  • Bucks: 675ft x 475ft
St. Louis:
  • Current Enterprise Center: 500ft x 450ft
  • Current Post Office: 600ft x 800 ft
Again you can see the smaller size of our arena and how the current Post Office location would work if in 5, 15 or 25 years the Blues decide they want a new place.

It would be pretty straightforward to take down Enterprise. There is very little shared utilities, not even the loading docks are shared. Most of Enterprise could be torn down and redeveloped with little to no affect on Stifel. Even the Blues offices are under Stifel and not Enterprise.
I think we're talking past each other. I don't mean to say it would be impossible, merely that it would be expensive and complicated. Demolishing large buildings always is, and doubly so when they share a common wall or any other kind of infrastructure with another building. (And I would be surprised if a wall is all the opera house has in common with the arena. Maybe it is, but I'd be a little surprised.) This might not be quite as bad as demolishing the Queeny Tower, but it would be more complicated than demolishing the old Arena, which was itself pretty darn complicated.

And I'm not quite sure why it's necessary. I understand that the team offices aren't what the people in them might like, so there's a need for new offices. I get it that the locker room facilities might need updating or expansion. That there could be a need for a practice gym adjacent or some team medical facilities, or some other back of house function. Okay. That makes sense. So I can understand the desire to expand or replace the facility, but there seems to be an assumption on this board that expansion isn't possible, and I haven't heard a call for replacement anywhere else.

Mind you, I don't work for the Blues, and I don't have any special knowledge of the facility. I've worked in there a couple of times, many many years ago, but just as a stagehand pushing boxes. (And the place makes that spectacularly pleasant. Hands down the best hall I've ever worked in to load.) And I don't really see anything else obvious that's wrong with it, so I favor expanding it as the cheaper and less disruptive option. Any option will require some demo, it's just a question of how much and how complicated.

My thinking is that demolishing and replacing a parking garage is a lot easier than demolishing and replacing an architecturally significant historic building that is presently in use, and demolishing and replacing a large arena. Building on the post office site more than doubles the amount of demo needed, and probably the complexity of it as well. Building north of the dome would require less demo and it would be cheaper than the post office site, but it would still be more demo and likely more expense than my proposal unless you want a vacant arena. (Which I really don't. I can't for the life of me think what we could do with it with no team in there. The Bilikens don't need it, and it would be competing with the Dome for conventions.)

So why are we all so set on building elsewhere? Because we don't think a garage across 14th would work? Why wouldn't it? Because we don't think it's possible to fit an expansion into an adjacent lot that's 250'x350'? Why not? Do we think the city wouldn't sell? They might not. But there's no guarantee the USPS would sell either. And it's darned unlikely either one would say no to a large enough wad of cash. I really feel like a garage across 14th solves a lot of problems and helps more development than just this one project. It makes the Municipal Courts more viable. It helps City Hall, potentially allowing them to do something with their parking lot.

So what is it the team really needs? Keep in mind, if this is a cheaper option it means they can spend more money on other things, like better finishes, more square footage, or maybe even salaries.

They tore down the old Kiel auditorium but left the Kiel theater side standing. Then the current arena was built and the theater sat unused for like 20 years because the then-ownership reneged on their deal to fix it up. So I doubt it there's any connection of power, gas, HVAC and other systems.

Here's an old article about Ed Golterman, the dude was absolutely obsessed with getting the Kiel back open.

This is by far the best option. Would be amazing for downtown's economy.

Knew a bunch of people that were in Vegas for the Blues game there. Couple takeaways - their stadium is on par with Enterprise, not significantly more impressive in any way. Pre game show was everything you expect from Vegas. One friend described it as over the top - which I guess they are aiming for in that town.

I’ve been to six NHL arenas, SJ, ANH, CHI, DEN, PIT, WAS. Gotta say we hold up pretty well. Shockingly so for the build date on Kiel Center.

SAP Center (SJ): 1993, $425M renovation approved

United Center (CHI): 1994, $7 billion redevelopment planned, including an arena renovation

Capital One Arena (WSH): 1997, $700 million renovation apporved

Honda Center (ANA): 1993, $1 billion renovation underway

Ball Arena (DEN): 1999, has a 25-year redevelopment approved, which will include ongoing arena upgrades.

PPG Paints Arena (PIT): 2010, underwent a $30 million renovation in 2023.

Enterprise Center: 1994, underwent $150 million renovation in 2017.

You see what other teams/cities are doing for their arenas, then you see what STL is doing. And I'm sure Pittsburgh will be doing a major renovation when their arena reaches 20+ years old.

And Vegas?  When was that built?

And while I appreciate your ability with the google-izer , I didn’t say it precluded any improvements, just that our arena definitely holds its own and punches over its weight in most cases.

There are a ton of subtle differences. While T-Mobile Arena is not super duper fancy I noticed the following:
  • There are like 8 different escalators to get from the main level to the upper bowl. Enterprise has 4.
  • In addition the stairways to get up/down are open and part of the main concourse. At Enterprise they're in the back.
  • Their concourses on both levels are much wider.
  • Pipes, wires and cables are hidden at T-Mobile. At Enterprise they're exposed.
  • At T-Mobile there are places to sit and congregate before the concert/game. At Enterprise there are like 15 tables with chairs in one bar on the 100 level.
Again, the problem is Enterprise's size. Pretty much all of those arenas (besides San Jose) you listed are 200,000 to 400,000 sq ft larger.

My biggest b**** about Enterprise is in between periods.  Concession lines, and to a lesser extent bathroom lines, clog up the concourse so much it's virtually impassable in some places.

I acknowledge the narrower concourses.  There are 2 club level bars (at least) and the beer garden that everyone can access before a game.  I think that is more of an issue of knowledge/information.  If we build up the area around the arena further the places to congregate will be adjacent local businesses which I would prefer.  I remember when Federko's was around and the sports radio stations would broadcast live form the stage up front.  Always full.

Again, not saying don't improve or don't build new eventually.  Enterprise was built well for 1994 and has morphed admirably through its lifetime.

You're thinking of Jacque's Sports Bar over in the Brown Shoe Warehouse building. If they ever get off their ass and actually put the Sheraton Hotel in there: hopefully they can get a bar back in that slot.

Federko's was like 30+ years ago at Forest Park Parkway and Big Bend opposite Wash U. I fondly remember that place because that's where I was to watch the Blues win over the Blackhawks in 1993 when Ed Belfour freaked out after the goal.

You're right and I was wrong. I completely forgot Jacques was Federkos for a short period. Looks like it was maybe a year or so.

Lots of coverage on the Tkachuk brothers and a story on their childhood which obviously featured St. Louis. Good little promotion of hockey in St. Louis

Would be great to bring one of those guys back to the Blues at one point of their careers

St. Louis has apparently made the top 10 to be the North American host city for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.

Andy Strickland said STL was "in consideration" to be the host and back on December 1, the NHL had narrowed the search from 25 cities to 16 (10 in NA and 6 in Europe). So logically, St. Louis must be in that list of 10.

Montreal, Philadelphia, and Toronto are previous hosts.

Calgary and Edmonton were chosen to be North America's host cities, St. Louis unfortunately didn't make the cut.
