A few new shots:

Amtrak in Kirkwood

Too bad the Japanese couldn't those bi-level coach cars certified and built in Illinois. I'm trying to visualize the new bi-levels with the new diesels.

At same time wondering how it will look if they go forward with the brightline series cars out of Cali as replacements. Would the roof line be the same or slightly higher. Bi-Level offered capacity but the brightline consist might look pretty good behind the new engines

^I'm not terribly familiar with the Brightline offerings. Just reading a little on wiki it sounds like they're using a similar Siemens locomotive for power on their Florida trains, and the rooflines match more or less exactly. I'll particularly miss the Budd built Amfleet cars, and even the Bombardier Horizon cars. Never thought I'd say that.

So I went out train spotting with Shadrach a couple of weeks ago. In theory, anyway. We got rather badly skunked in the actual moving trains department, but . . . at least there was a little yard action downtown.

We did, however spot some neat buildings. (To be detailed in another thread.)

PostJul 07, 2018#29

Oh . . . off topic slightly, while I've been a little remiss on spotting 1:1 action, I did visit a neat local layout that is open to the public on a monthly basis:

That's a legit St. Louis tourist attraction right? Even one that's not too terribly well known yet. Open on the first Sunday of the month from 11-4, so go check it out. And it's the standard local price: free. ;-) 5901 Hampton across from Midwest Money. (Which is on the layout in miniature. I think they're related.)

Indeed. Might even be mostly Lionel. They use the Lionel DCC at the very least. (And a lot of the locomotives are recognizable modern Lionel.) And some On30, I believe it was. (Which is basically O on HO track. That was presumably two rail, but I wasn't looking closely enough to be sure. Got distracted and it's at eye level where it would be less obvious anyway.) Very nice layout. Lots to see.

Yep. A couple of the shots look like the Bachman On30 Climax logging loco.

Bachman was making some very nice models in the late 90s when I was last buying, as a part of their Spectrum line. I have a couple myself, though not in On30. (I was always an HO and N guy, though now I have a bit of classic era Lionel three rail. Inherited my grandfather's Christmas loop and my dad loaned me some reinforcements.) Anyway . . . it's a great layout all around. My hat is off to those as built it. Lots of great custom work. (The KC Union Station is really quite stunning.)

Seems like a good time for an update:

This isn't an especially good picture, but I feel like these signals are on borrowed time.

Used to be CPLs on the left here. And the access road was the IT under catenary.

Things had been pretty quiet all afternoon . . . until they weren't. Nothing moving at Dupo. Nothing at Madison. TRRA is just parked in Granite City. Nothing at Lennox. And then, bam. I can haz TRAINZ!

What a great old building; hard to believe this one's still around.

^There used to be a bunch of other great old buildings nearby: a refrigerated warehouse once owned by AB, I believe, given the eagle motifs, and a large and lovely factory building once home to Graniteware. Man, we've lost so much. But yes, I was surprised at that one. Very much worth wasting some electrons trying to get a shot. :) Would love to know the story behind the ghost advertising. Deeply intriguing.

PostJun 13, 2021#37

Finally went on a proper train spotting expedition Friday. There were all down on the Chester Sub, between Dupo and Chester. It's a great drive and the French Colonia remnants alone are well worth the trip. But this thread is about trains, so . . .

There wasn't terribly much action, thanks to this fellow below tying up the northbound main.

A railroader friend tells me he believes it's an undercutter, which is a machine that scoops up ballast from below the track, cleans it, and replaces it. (I believe.) You can kind of see a gondola and conveyor. The thing was nearly a mile away from us at the time, so there's a LOT of telephoto compression going on making it hard to sort out what we're looking at.

We did see a few southbound freights moving.

But everything northbound was just parked on the main, either dead on hours or about to be. (I believe railroaders refer to that as being "hogged.") Some trains still had crews, but there were so many I can't believe it was going to last all that long.

(The above is just two examples. We saw at least four parked, and maybe as many as six. It was a little hard to make out.) Anyway, it was fun to finally get out.

^Looks to me like it'll come up the Chester Sub line and head west on the Jeff City Sub. I expect they do and they'll publish the information as we get closer, but anyplace along either sub should do. You just need to know when it's coming. There's decent odds it'll tie up here overnight. (Particularly since we're an advertised stop.) It'll pass Kirkwood Station and through Pacific and Washington on the way out. It'll probably pass through Chester and Dupo on the way in. If years past are any indication it'll probably tie up overnight near Ewing. But time will tell.

Hey SP, you know about Big Boy 4014 coming through STL on Aug 28th, right? https://www.up.com/heritage/steam/schedule/index.htm
Would be nice if you could post some photos from downtown STL and/or Kirkwood.

I'm going to try and see this train.

Shocked that it is going to be on display for a full six hours.

^^I do. I've got instructions to take my dad to see it. I figure Shadrach might want to see it too. Probably more than a few of us. :)

I went down and took a few pictures, but I was dragging a gaggle of people with who were mostly non-plussed by the half mile line. I have to assume Union Pacific is tickled pink that their publicity gimic is working out so spectacularly well for them. :)

I do officially hate that ladder, though. It's a real drag.
