7th and Russell? Man, they did not even give that one a chance. What a waste of build-out money. I don't even think that one has been open for a year yet.

I've heard the following locations in the burbs will be closing:



Clayton & Baxter, Chesterfield MO

Howdershell & Dunn Hazelwood MO

SR K & Weldon Springs, O'Fallen MO

Elm & SH 370, St Charles MO

Telegraph/Erb, St Louis MO

West Florissant @ Lucas & Hunt, Jennings, MO

While I'm glad Starbucks isn't closing the Loughborough Commons location (despite my love-hate relationship with that shopping center so close to my home), there are some locations on the list that surprise me.



Union Station is no surprise, but the closure of the Euclid/Laclede location is a real disappointment. That location is at least a hundred times better than the tiny dump on Maryland Avenue. I can't say I'm too broken up about the Soulard location, since I have other SBUX locations closer to home, it's already near a BreadCo store, and there are other (better) coffeehouses in the area anyway.



Out in the 'burbs, I'm sorry to see the Oakville (Telegraph/Erb roads) location go. I work in SoCo, and I really like that particular location. It's always been rather busy, although I think it was a stupid move to not build a freestanding store on Telegraph with a drive-through since everything out there is so car-oriented anyway. Too bad SBUX probably won't take another chance on Oakville, even though it's got some of the best demographics in South County.



If SBUX was going to close a city location, I'd rather see them close the Kingshighway/Chippewa store, just because I will always hate that shopping center. I don't like Loughborough Commons much, but it is at least convenient for me, and it didn't replace anything special. Southtown, OTOH, sits on the site of the old Famous-Barr store, which was one of my favorite Southside buildings that was mercilessly destroyed like so many others before it.

Most of these are brand new stand-alone stores!

When people can buy at gallon of gas instead of a cup of coffee - guess what they are choosing. I recently heard that Starbucks is closing over 200 locations in Manhattan alone. Scary times for companies.

well great, so now the new Soulard strip mall will have one remaining business, Bread Co. The rest of the storefronts are still vacant. My girlfriend was told by the Tan Co. a few months ago that they would be opening there, but nothing has come of it. If there's anything worse than a strip mall in Soulard it's an empty strip mall in Soulard.

Strip mall in Soulard? Maybe it's because I haven't been there in awhile, but where is that located?

^It's not in the historic part of Soulard, it's across 7th Street from the Farmer's Market extending South to Russell.

The Euclid and Laclede store closing is such a shame. Could be the construction of the West End Lofts keeping it too hidden?? The space was great there. What a loss.

^ I guess it's just a difference of opinion, because I'm not much of a fan of the Maryland Avenue location. It's nice enough, and the employees exude typical Starbucks friendliness. However, as much as I like cozy spaces, this one is just way too cozy for my taste.



I guess I should give Einstein a try, as I haven't been there in ages. Coffee Cartel isn't really an option for me anymore.



I wish Starbucks would've given the new location a chance, but I'm not terribly surprised when they bit off so much more than they could chew.

So which one is in the old Bar Italia building? That's the one I've been to and it seemed to do pretty good business (though this was a while back)

Hopefully that means something nicer will move into the storefront in the Park East building. I was disappointed to see all that was there was an out-of-town bank and a Starbucks.

Those two factors combined didn't have anywhere near as great an impact on Starbucks bottom line as the increased competition. Everyone from McDonald's to your neighborhood grocery store are offering "gourmet" coffee and a comfortable place to sit down with wifi now.



Plus, the fact that there is now a drive-thru Starbucks every quarter mile along most major urban highways has probably hurt their cachet a bit.

I've been spending a lot of time in Vancouver on business, and it always cracks me up when I go past a particular intersection here that has two Starbucks stores diagonally opposite each other. And both are always packed full of people.

Northwest Plaza McD's

The downside is if the leaseholder restricts uses for the buildings. Keep an eye on the locations to make certain the buildings and landscaping are maintained and free of all litter. I'll be watching the Soulard location.
