That's an old map. Illinois has a statewide smoking ban in bars and restaurants.

^ But that's what the map says. The states shaded white have a smoking ban. It's the states in gray that have no ban.

Insane. But then again, Missourah has always been content to be backwards.

Our tobacco tax is also significantly lower than most states, including North Carolina.

So we wouldn't be out that much in taxes. But then people might live longer and would need Medicaid. Oh, wait, we eliminated that. When Missouri becomes the only state left that hasn't outlawed smoking in restaurants, people from surrounding states will flock here to eat. Customers always leave restaurants where smoking is banned and go to smoking restaurants, right? That's what swayed the Kirkwood City Council.

I understand no smoking in airplanes, stadiums, and the office place, but

most restaurants have separate smoking sections. Is someone's smoke from the other side of the restaurant really bothering you so much that you have to lobby for a statewide ban. I guess I just don't get it.

I really hope you're being sarcastic. This is why it should be a national ban on smoking in all public places.

I think tongue was planted firmly in cheek on that one.

#1. Pretty obvious he was joking.

#2. Yes, I agree that the government should run every aspect of our lives.

Just imagine it: smoking holidays with people pouring into Missouri just for the chance to smoke! Kind of like how Las Vegas used to be with gambling and brothels. We don’t need a Chinese air cargo hub. Lambert could get back to its previous glory as people from all over would pour off the plane just for a chance to smoke while they drink and eat in bars and restaurants.

We could have trains and buses that run 24/7/365 from bar to bar and restaurant to restaurant just so they can smoke inside.

We could build our own Statue of Liberty with a cigarette in one hand and a giant Zippo lighter blazing in the sky. At the base we would have the following sonnet.

"Give me your edgy, your drinkers,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe smoke,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the oppressed people needing nicotine, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lighter inside the golden door because you don't have to go outside to smoke!"

How about a Fred "Dirt Cheap" Teutenberg/Lady Liberty hybrid?

The RFT did a pretty comprehensive survey of our elected officials:

And maybe we could have SMOKE chasers. You know, kind of like storm chasers on the Discovery Channel. They would come to Missouri in vans with infra-red imaging radars on top looking for smoke and personal smoking tragedies one at a time. And they'll always arrive just a little too late, but there will be good footage of them driving fast.

People smoke at happy hours. Do all of these people really want to drink $5 beers over one order of $7 appetizers for extended periods of time if they're unable to smoke if they want?

This will really hurt Kilkenneys and Miso after work and on weekends. Look for others to follow.

Who suffers? The wait staff.

Also, look for more alcohol to be carried out of the bars and into the streets as people crowd the sidewalks to smoke. This will undoubtably lead to increases of "bad behavior" and articles on how StL is losing its moral character.

Ah, the law of unintended consequences sweeps in again.

Awesome...hopefully if enough Muni's get this done (Wildwood and Kirkwood both considering it), the county and state will get the hint and enact a county-wide or state-wide ban to protect its citizens from second hand smoke.

St. Louis County may put smoking on ballot

By Paul Hampel

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

07/21/2009

ST. LOUIS COUNTY — A proposal to outlaw indoor smoking in all public places in St. Louis County may go before voters as early as November.

St. Louis County Councilwoman Barbara Fraser, D-University City, requested on Monday that the county counselor draw up legislation for a ban that would mirror one that Clayton enacted last week.

The smoking issue could go before a vote of the St. Louis County Council as early as tonight.

"I think a ban would be great for the county, and the timing is good," Fraser said. "For some time now, I have been hearing from many municipalities, and particularly from my constituents, that they want the county to take the bull by the horns on this issue."
