That is NOT the case. No agreement has been reached although talks are definitely in progress.

It's a stretch to say that he's responsible for it since discussions about relocating predate his tenure, although he clearly has to take the lead in getting it done if that's what you mean. However, the Shrine tends to do things very slowly and involve its Corporate Headquarters in every major project like this, so don't look for any formal announcements or a ground-breaking anytime soon. Think years more than months.

^ Intriguing, but I'm not completely convinced. I propose a scoop-off between tubesocks and ward17. Whomever can break news first on Shriner's move gets the award - all the $1 PBR's you can drink at Magee's.

Son-of-a-Shriner! So let's make it drinks at the Billy Goat!

(BTW - what's going on at the Magee's building? I'd heard that the Gills own it - hopefully this means will be left standing. IMO - it was great to have a bar there and I hope it will be a restaurant. They should do a killer lunch and a decent dinner with the thousands working at the doorstep. Just bring down the green panelling and put in some windows!)

BTW, is Duffy's on the south side of 40 (at Boyle and Chouteau?) still open?

Oh, ward17 is a poster. I missed that the first time.

I'm all for any challenge that involves adult beverages, but I don't think I'd post anything that's not already public knowledge, or well-known by both parties involved and not considered confidential. But I'll be more than happy to clear up any misconceptions that I see posted. After all, I registered only because I saw this thread.

Shriners Hospital surgeons are primarily Washington University docs that practice at both Shriners and Children's Hospitals. And since Shriners has limited diagnostic capabilities, it often uses Children's facilities for certain tests. Clearly, having them in closer proximity is advantageous. Unfortunately, any construction will not occur until after the Highway 40 project is complete (coincidentally, not by design) so things will get worse before they get better.

As for Shriners current campus, clearly it's in the crosshairs of many developers, and Frontenac would love to grow their tax base. While they've been supportive of Shriners at their currently location, they won't miss them at all.

So, in the long run, Washington University physicians, Shriners Hospital patients, Children's Hospital, Frontenac, St. Louis City, and St. Louis County will all benefit from this move when it occurs. But like I said, think years, not months before that happens.

Should be a signed agreement to purchase the land in the next couple weeks, then it's pretty much a done deal that Shriners is moving. Things will get rolling this summer, and there's likely to be at least a symbolic groundbreaking next year when some 10,000 Shriners flock to St. Louis for their annual powwow, followed first by a parking garage, then a whole new hospital.

My giant ego and sharp prognostication skills aside, this is great news for the Shriners and for the medical center. The Shrine hospitals benefit a lot of unfortunate kids, and Wash U physicians provide a great deal of that care, and now it's easier for both.

OK, no parking garage, but the new hospital is still coming. 6-8 stories on stilts with parking underneath, presumably for all the mini-cars the Shriners drive. Break ground (at least symbolically) during the Shriners' Imperial Session next July, building up and hospital open by say.....Late 2011?

^ So will they share some of the existing parking facilities? It doesn't seem as though there would be enough parking below the building and underground parking doesn't seem to make sense with all the land available. Though, I'd love to see it underground. How many sq ft and how big's the footprint?

Let's hope the parking level is enclosed somehow. I think those "buildings on stilts" look really tacky. I mean, it's not like we're expecting a storm-surge or anything.

^ True and eventhough this will likely be a fairly isolated building, it's nice to have some street life - sidewalks, landscaping, nice street-level entrances . . .

SW corner of Clayton and Newstead? I'm guessing, but I think someone told me that.

Houston's Shriners Hospital is located in the Texas Medical Center, shown below. Wonder if the Washington University Medical Center would ever get this massive?

^All of them. With the exception of the apartment complexes in the background, every last one. And a few aren't in the photo. Notice the massive parking lots. The photographer did a good job of getting a close-up with so much of the medical center able to be seen.

The TMC borders Hermann Park, seen at the bottom of the photo.
