Only because there was no listing for "Altar Boy Architects Inc".

Grover wrote:Doug - thanks again for your work on this issue. Really was a good letter in the West End Word. I hope that many of us remain committed to issues like the San Luis. There is zero reason we shouldn't 'survey' much of St. Louis, identify buildings that are not currently designated historic/contributing, advocate for new historic districts, etc. etc. etc. etc. There's a near infinite amount of proactive work we can do so that we will have the upperhand when similar issues surface.

That work has been taking place for years and as you type.

True. We just need more and more people to be part of that process. But once again I'll call attention to the disparity between protesting the demolition of the San Luis and the participation in the ongoing process to produce a new CWE development and zoning code. We need passion in developing a new code.

This is available a number of places, but you can read the judge's decision here: http://www.stlurbanworkshop.com/2009/07 ... iff-v.html

The rally was changed to today because of yesterdays bad weather.

From 5-8 please show support for our Preservation ordinances -- and see the building in such a horrible, depressing state. We cannot allow this process to continue!

There was a photo of the demolition progress in the Post today. It made me sick.

Thanks, Krewson. We'll remember.

A fair amount of people showed up last night. We had a wonderful 15 foot sign that said "Coming Soon: Nothing."

PostJul 31, 2009#432

From the Business Journal.

Sounds like they are trying to make this area like SLU. I wonder how many homes will be torn down to extend the campus North. What will happen with the Chancery?

Jay said under the Archdiocese’s plans, the 1.7-acre site will house

125 parking spaces as well as landscaped green space. “The real idea

is to fill out the notion of a campus for the Cathedral
.”

Landscaping with ornamental trees will line the lot along Lindell, and

the site will include lawn space, low walls and plantings “very

consistent with the rest of the Lindell exposure,” Jay said. “The

whole Lindell exposure will read as one campus, with signage

introducing it at the Taylor intersection.
Visually it will be a huge

improvement.”

The Cathedral and Rosati-Kain have had “woefully inadequate” off-the-

street parking for a long time, Jay said. “The Cathedral is a major

regional destination. It’s a real need.”

The Friends of the San Luis opposed the idea of converting the site at

a busy Central West End intersection into a parking lot.

“That in that neighborhood a building would come down to make way for

a parking lot strikes us as absurd,” Allen said.

I'm wondering why this group didn't utilize the Preservation Board appeal process. Now the court has set precedent that those that aren't directly affected, such as the preservationists, have no legal claim in such issues.

The appeals process does not halt demolition. The building would have came down during appeal and that's why we sought an injunction: to prevent demo while we appeal to the Preservation Board and Planning Commission.

It's sexy and would have been a great location for hot dates. I always imagined drinking a martini poolside or near the sidewalk.

Now during the demolition process you can hope it rains a lot and fills the vast hole, much like the Citywalk project does. Viola, pool!

I suspect he's referring to the current state of the interior. Remember, it's thechariot.

I hope people reach out to national publications. ie: New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, National Trust Magazine, Urban Land Institute Magazine, etc. This should be national news, in terms of pieces on preservation, architecture and planning. If St. Louisans don't understand how atrocious this is, maybe we need to have a national audience help guide us from making such terrible decisions.

Doug's article pointed to the Moonrise Hotel, while I don't want to knock it, it clearly ATTEMPTS to be something as potentially modern and hip as the San Luis could have been. Surely Joe Edward's would NOT have allowed that building to be torn down if it was in the Loop, I think that goes without saying.

Watching it's destruction on a daily basis is humiliating, not only for the Archdiocese and Lyda Krewson, but really for St. Lousians overall. We allowed this to happen.

SOMEONE young and progressive, please run against Lyda!!
