^ this is across the street right by the metro station and in the same building as the museum.... I think the entrance for 605 Washington may actually be on N. 6th. Porano will be opening in the old Takaya spot across the street. Awesome news all around.
Now hopefully something will happen with 505 Washington!

Referencing Saint Louis Magazine, some of the 2015 restaurant opening targets are as follows:
- Taze Mediterranean (M/X): April
- Tiny Bar (next to Bridge on Locust): April
- Gyro Company (old Hamilton Jewelers building near OPO): April
- Porano Pasta & Gelato (M/X): Summer
- Sugar Fire BBQ (M/X by Blues Museum): September
And of course the Blues Museum hopes to open by the end of the year as well as the completion of the Arcade-Wright Building and the Arch park lid. Visitors to next year's Arch Madness will see a lot of exciting changes downtown.

^ thanks... and despite the troubles down in the Landing, a Burlesque theater and bar will be going in as well.
Like RW said, 605 Washington Avenue is actually a storefront on N 6th Street, just behind the entrance to the westbound Metrolink platform. Really a beautiful stretch of building:

^ Hopefully this will also help lease up street-level commercial space across the street on the 6th Street side of the 555 Washington Building.
Actually I think in the coming years we'll need to keep an eye on this little, alley-like stretch that dead-ends at the Dome... the surface lot to the north is where the CVB is entertaining a parking garage with first floor retail and I believe Drury could activate the ground floor space where they currently have car parking. Anyway, it's conceivable that this could become a bit of an "entertainment alley."

Biz Journal spoke with Amos Harris and he said that he contacted just about all the BBQ guys in town as he saw a joint as integral to the Blues Museum experience. And longer-term he hopes to get a distillery as well. So it sounds like there will be more space available even after the Museum and Sugarfire.

Btw, I think a retail spot in the area... maybe 555 Washington?... would be a great place for a downtown location of STL-Style. Just sayin!

I think we will see a resurgence of retail along Wash Ave. The activity at the MX and Mango moving will have a sizable impact. I wouldn't be upset if a few mainstays closed and freed up space for some new ideas.

It's too bad that the Bar Association leased the first floor corner space at 555 instead of a traditional office space elsewhere. I'm glad to have them downtown, but in that space, it's kind of a missed opportunity.roger wyoming II wrote:Biz Journal spoke with Amos Harris and he said that he contacted just about all the BBQ guys in town as he saw a joint as integral to the Blues Museum experience. Agreed. That location was home to retail space for decades, and if I'm not mistaken, wasn't it originally the home of The Famous Clothing Store before it merged with Barr's Dry Goods? The Bar Association is a plus, but it's definitely a missed opportunity.debaliviere wrote:It's too bad that the Bar Association leased the first floor corner space at 555 instead of a traditional office space elsewhere. ^ +2.
Something like this eclectic John Varvatos men's wear boutique that opened in a wonderful rehab of a Gilbert-owned Detroit building has Washington Ave all over it:

Varvatos is a Detroit native so I doubt it would have opened otherwise, but its great to see and a terrific example of what can happen when you hustle harder. (Varvotos's boutique is just one example of clothing retailers with regional ties coming to the Detroit's downtown/midtown area.)
Anyway, it would be great if we can get a bit of upscale boutiques and small shops back but as Amos Harris says its going to have to be clustered at least initially as it won't work spread out around downtown.

^I saw a great JV storefront like that in San Francisco last year. On a walk around my hotel at Union Square, I was really struck by the smart and stylish usage of retail in beautiful buildings. It was like being in a mall only on a fantastic bustling street: Macy's, H&M, Art of Shaving, John Varvatos, all on the same natty block. Obviously on a much smaller scale, it would be cool to see Washington Avenue recapture some of that grand garment district identity back again.

^ Several possibilities exist, but I wonder where the most attractive/logical site for a modest cluster of shopping could go.
Looks like the Mediterranean place that will go in at the old Gelateria Tavolini spot at 14th & Washington is making progress and I heard a comic book and game store will be moving in two doors down.
Interesting. I saw that Wizard's Wagon in the Loop hired the general manager of Star Clipper comics after it announced they were closing up shop, and is going to start carrying comics. Maybe they're moving or opening a DT location.roger wyoming II wrote:I heard a comic book and game store will be moving in two doors down.

Awesome! That place will be like Macy's on Black Friday when the FIRST Robotics Competition is in town.

That block is a reasonably successful retail strip... as successful as anywhere else downtown.

Medina, the Mediterranean place on Wash 13th, opened today and is the first of a number of new restaurants that will be opening in the next few months. Tiny Bar next to Bridge may be the next up.
Totally a promotional post but I had lunch at Hiro for the first time yesterday. I walked away incredibly impressed. The Korean Rice Bowl was off the charts. A slightly different vibe from my last experience in that space. Sugar Lounge circa 2009, 2am, slightly browned out, spilling drinks all over myself in an attempt to dance...
