Highschooler here. This was more popular like 3 or 4 years ago, but if someone does that below their waist and you get caught looking at their hand, then they get to clock you in the back of the head or smack you on the neck. I'm certain that is what the kid was doing and had no mal-intent behind it whatsoever. He is definitely the age and has the presence of someone who would play that game with their buddies and not a white nationalist.

i forgot about the circle game. kind-of weird to show it to a Google car but, yeah, he's a kid. i figured most parents would have discussed the implications with their kids after everything that's happened over the last five years (not that kids don't have minds of their own). but kids these days are extremely internet-savvy, and after seeing photos of entire classes giving the Nazi salute i guess i just assume they know what they're doing.

On 13th between MLK and Cole, the whole east side of the street has some apparently vestigial signs: "police parking only" and "police horse trailers only." What was there, and how long ago was this? The signs look not too worn.

^ I definitely don't know...but maybe a staging area for recent protests? They often times bring horses out for those.
Maybe a longer shot, but didn't Police HQ use some of the lots for parking that were taken for the MLS project? Seems odd they would take space this far from HQ, so I doubt that would have anything to do with it, but who knows.

They take the horse troops downtown often enough for crowd control anyway. For events like parades and festivals. Maybe even for game days. That's about as close to the middle of downtown as you could get without actually being in it. Maybe that's just where they've always parked 'em? Not sure. ^ gravois is absolutely awful. another giant pedestrian-murdering car sewer. imagine if that were actually a walkable intersection anchored by one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the US.

^ church, cathedral, oratory. same difference.
not even necessarily a public plaza. just an environment that isn't miserable at best and deadly at worst for those outside of a car.

^^ Eh, not every church needs a public plaza. That "we need green space/parking" argument has been used by dozens of churches in this town to demolish significant buildings.
And truthfully I had no trouble crossing the street here. The entire intersection had high-visibility crosswalks and all the curb ramps had been rebuilt, there were new bike lanes. That's not to say it's perfect or to defend MoDot's priorities here. It absolutely needs to lose a lane in each direction, bulb outs and refuges need to be added, the bike lanes should be parking protected. There's work to be done. But in crossing the street several times to get different angles of the church...I definitely didn't feel like I was going to be "murdered" by any cars. Not even close to the scariest or most dangerous place I've ever shot a photograph. Just my opinion though.

^ not the same intersection but i used to walk to Schnucks pretty frequently when we lived in Dutchtown. despite the crosswalks, crossing Gravois always felt dangerous due to the width and speeds. you're just waiting for somebody to run the light or gun it when the light changes. not saying it's the most deadly road anywhere or that it's not crossable, but it's too wide and fast to be comfortable for pedestrians. it's also lined with vacant lots and used car dealerships, which doesn't make it any more inviting. it needs to be reduced to 3 auto lanes—including the turn lane—with protected bike lanes, wider sidewalks, and a central bollard-protected pedestrian island at all crossings. looking at Gravois on Google Maps is sad; it was plowed right through the south side street grid, and everything along its edges has been predictably eroded because its a highway.

^ yes, sorry. it is a beautiful shot. gorgeous lighting and color. that church is a treasure, and it has one of the tallest steeples in the US!
