OK so we are coming for sure.....what should I not miss? What's new in the Lou? I'm familiar with stl so don't dump me the typical "go to the landing" or "to to the loop"....give me the new stuff.

You name two of them in your post above - I have heard great things about Red Moon and Lucas Park Grill - really neat spaces and both have received above average to excellent reviews on their food. I have seen some photos of the inside of Mosaic as well - it looks very nice. IMO, the bevy of new restaurants are the most exciting thing happening entertainment wise. Of course, Velvet and Rue 13 are the places you will most likely want to wind up if you dig the electronic music scene.
Also, there are a couple of new nightspots in the CWE if you can make it out that far - Drunken Fish sushi bar at Maryland/Euclid and SubZero vodka bar across Maryland on Euclid as well. Both are very sharp spaces, I know that Drunken Fish has local resident DJs spinning prog/house/breaks/downtempo on the weekends as well. Might be good options for Saturday...
Have fun!

Beer City?s can?t miss fun St. Louis weekend-
Don?t know what you are into, but here are some ideas on places, food, and bars- Lucky for you, about 2 months ago out together a list for some friends out of town- all the links still work and I added a few places since then. I have left off things that you said you all ready know about ( The loop and The Landing) and did not include far flung suburbs like St. Chuck and Alton Il (which both have an awesome old downtown districts)
You may want to see what?s up in the Loop anyway, I don?t know when you were there last, but there have been a lot of additions in the past 2 years especially east of Skinker
I also did not include alot stuff on Soulard or Benton Park (really it just gets to be too much for one post) but I do highly recommend Venice Caf? in Benton Park and McGurk?s in Soulard (there are so many bars in Soulard though it is hard to go wrong)
Here is what the BBC had to say about Venice
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A454240 - very cool, very weird place
http://stlouis.citysearch.com/profile/11341598/ - more Venice
McGurk?s ? One of the best Irish pubs around, better than even a lot in Ireland
http://www.mcgurks.com/
I think some others will probably cover downtown. But by all means do not miss-
City Museum, Delmar and 16 th, right off Washington ?
http://www.citymuseum.org/
Nothing quite like it anywhere, check it out day or night, great if you have kids during the day, more of an adult playground during the night, complete with 2 bars.
The Following are by neighborhood-
Grand Center-
Grand Center is the arts district in Midtown, with a variety of things to do, not a great bar scene but there are a few-
http://www.48plus2.com/grand.htm
The Moolah theater, former Shriners Mosque at Lindell and Vandeventer in grand center- http://www.stlouiscinema.com/moolah/aboutus.cfm
Large temple converted into lofts, a huge couch and table movie theater, bowling ally and lounge, just opened.
The museums of Grand Center
http://www.grandcenter.org/museum/index.html
I have been to the Pulitzer (designed by Tado Ando, and it is pretty cool, minimalist design) have not been to the Contemporary yet (they are next door to each other)
South Grand ?
If you follow Grand Avn. South, from highway 44 south to Gravois is pretty cool, loads of ethnic restaurants and grocers, mixed with bars, and other retail. If you head east on Hawthorne, you can check out some great mansions in Compton heights, just follow the streets around, they are cool, while down there you can check out Tanner B?s a personal favorite on Shenandoah.
If you like Vietnamese food hit Pho Grand, cheap, fast, good, but there are a lot of restaurants down there worth hanging out at.
If you want a taste of an authentic St. Louis corner tavern, try The Blackthorn, at the corner of Wyoming and Spring,
Also while there take a drive through Tower Grove Park. A real 19 th century carriage park (park designed to ride a carriage in) Cool old pavilions and monuments right off grand, stretches all the way to Kingshighway. Missouri Botanical Garden is right in the area also, if you like garden stuff.
The Hill-
Drive up and down Shaw on the hill (between Hampton and Kingshighway) cool street, have lunch at Adriana?s on Shaw, or a cup of joe at Shaw coffee right down the street, Viviano?s Italian grocer is down there also, cool place to buy rare food. Just drive around the Hill, there is all kind of little shops and tons of places to eat.
Central West End-
There is plenty of stuff on line about the West End, but here are few hidden things-
Brennan?s 4659 Maryland, - Just around the corner from Drunken Fish and Sub-Zero Vodka bar. Looks just like a wine shop on the street, but if you go downstairs (just ask the dude working) there is a cool little whisky bar, seating for about 12 people total. Great place for conversation w/ a date, if you have a date, if you don?t have a date, pull up in front of Sub-Zero in a 5 series BMW, and you will have a date.
There is also the Chase Park Plaza on Lindell, which has several bars of varying formality in it.
http://www.chaseparkplaza.com/
West End dining options-
http://www.cweba.com/dining.shtml
Check out Nik?s cool very chill wine bar and hookah lounge-
http://saucemagazine.com/niks/
Bar Italia, restaurant and lounge, (also on Maryland) Down the street on Euclid you will find the less formal Dressels, and around the corner on McPherson is Llyewlyn?s both are Welsh pubs, and personal favorites.
Cool neighborhood- If you head west on Lindell from West End, you cross over Kingshighway, on your left will be Forest Park, on you right (you have to watch out for it) will be a little street called ?Lake Ave? turn North (the only way you can go) and you will enter 2 of the most beautiful, and well preserved private mansion streets around, Westmoreland, and Portland place. These are private (a sign warns you) but no one has ever stopped me from driving through (portland place is cooler than Westmorland)
Forest Park ?
The Zoo, The Science Center, The Art Museum, The History Museum, The Jewel Box, The Grand Basin (newly restored, cool view) Steinberg Ice Skating Rink, The Boat House- Too much to list just go to the visitors center on Grand Drive (in the park not Grand Ave.) they have a huge map with info on everything
http://stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/parks/forestpark/
Dogtown ?
Dogtown is just south of Forest Park, nice little neighborhood. Go to the intersection of Clayton and Tamm, just south of Oakland, there are neighborhood bars and restaurants all around ranging from Mexican to Italian, there are also some bars.
Suburbs- all the suburbs metioned here are close in -
Maplewood-
Maplewood is a streetcar suburb just located just south of Richmond Heights and Clayton, they are developing a nice little commercial district along Manchester rd. between Southwest Ave. and Sutton. The Schlafly brewery is out there, which does a really good tour of their new plant ?The Bottleworks?
http://www.schlafly.com/
Clayton-
St. Louis?s second downtown ? some nice restaurants but they are pretty upscale- If you want to hang someplace cool check out Jimmy?s On The Park and Sasha?s wine bar next door. They are tucked away in the Hi-Point/DeMun neighborhood where St. Louis and Clayton blur.
http://jimmyscafe.com/
As long as you are there drive around the neighborhood and check out Concordia Lutheran Seminary, across the street, really cool place (just west of Forest Park actually)
Wash U. has a cool campus, but, you have to get out of your car to see it, check out the quad on the west end of campus.
I am sure others will add some stuff too?.
Have fun

Crap-
Forgot to add-
Lafayette Square-
Another do not miss- Just south of Downtown, bounded by Chouteau on the North, Jefferson on the West, 44 on the south and Truman Pky. On the East ? This is one of the best preserved 19 the century neighborhoods in the Midwest, just drive or better yet walk around the square, bounded by Lafayette, Mississippi, and Park. Cool park, kick ass architecture, (check out the new lofts being built, one inside an old Church facing the square, another in the old city hospital on Lafayette, they just may be open for view on Sat and Sunday)
http://www.lafayettesquare.org/
Hit Bailey?s Chocolate Bar- good date place
http://www.beeradvocate.com/beerfly/user_reviews/10227/
Next door is ?33? wine bar- a bit pretentious, across the street is Squires, good food, live bands, down the street around the corner is 1111, located at 1111 Mississippi (hence the name) there are some other cool joints, just nose around

thanks BC....glad to get another opinion on STL. We're mid 20's, no kids, pretty much drink and eat is our weekend activities. We probably hit STL once a year....it's a quick trip on a 3 day weekend and we love to travel.
nobody else? Come on....this is your chance to give me the lowdown on the lou that will make this KC boy jealous.
KC -
Would love to give some more suggestions, although I would have to think hard to cover something that beer city hasn't mentioned!
You say that you are familiar with STL, so maybe you can give us a FEW places that you have already visited, eaten at, gone out to, etc in town so we don't waste our breathe suggesting things that you have already done? Which ones you liked and disliked? What kind of places do you dig in KC that STL may have a counterpart to (I'm pretty familiar with KC as well)? What do you plan on doing during the daytimes? Shopping? Walking around?
Also, do you want to stay downtown, or are you open to places throughout the city and urban suburbs?
A couple things that I thought of would be Pin-up bowl in the U City loop - made Condenasts (or travel + leisure) mags list of US hotspots a couple of months ago. For cheap eats you could jet down to Grand South Grand for some of the finest Vietnamese establishments in the Midwest.
As far as things that would make a KC boy jealous - one suggestion is just ride Metrolink all weekend!!
If you can give us some more clues, I, for one, would be happy to give some more suggestions...

we're staying downtown and yes we will hit the metrolink and be jealous and pissed off at the same time we don't have it.
Ummm, what we've done in the past. We went to snow last year and really liked velvet and a few other places but hell if I can remember the names. I've done the landing too many times and like most of you, isn't really my thing. We aren't much into live music but that BB's soups place between Soulard and busch stadium was a fun time. We will likely stay around downtown but anywhere along the metrolink would be good, I'm not a big fan of driving when I don't need to and luckily in stl, it's halfway possible. The loop was a cool place but I doubt we'll hit that this time, probably do something around the CWE. If you know KC pretty well, we like places like Velvet Dog, Empire Room, Vivace, Kabal, and sometimes we'll hit a low down dive bar like a Kellys.
We're heading in Sat and leaving Monday and with as cold as it's going to be (here and there) not sure we'll be doing much building/city wandering around that I usually love to do. I think the city museum thing I'll try and check out, seems very unique. If we were to do some walking around, give me the hot spots of construction to hit, new condos, retail, etc. I plan on checking out city grocers just to see if they will come to KC as well
eating wise we haven't been as lucky...first off you guys need more places to eat when the bars close. A buddy and I went over for the Royals/Cards game and when the bars closed we were shocked there were no street vendors.....because we NEEDED food you know.
One of my favorite places I've eaten in StL was some little dive on the hill and Charlie Gitto's (I think that's the name) downtown. any new good sushi places downtown? Thai food? A good Mexican restaurant we haven't been able to find in STL so maybe a suggestion there.
thanks for the help so far, we always keep ourselves entertained.

Based on this I would suggest a couple of things:
Daywise, definite on the City Museum - have not heard one negative thing about from people ages 5-50. Perhaps the new Contemporary Art Museum might be up your alley in Midtown. Might be cool to look around the newly renovated Renaissance Hotel downtown- "An American Place" restaurant is supposedly a stunning dining area. Lots of people I know have just stopped by to poke their head in and look.
Hot construction is mainly up and down Washington but neighboring streets (Locust, Olive) have some things going on. Walk by and stare in horror at the Century demolition on Olive, or head over to see how the new ballpark is progressing. CWE should have the 4545 high rise starting up, and there are some cool lofts on Forest Park Pkwy at Euclid that are either finished or close.
Downtown eateries - a couple mentioned above - Red Moon and Lucas Park Grille I think you already had planned on visiting and have been highly recommended by those "in the know"- Kitchen K is a pretty cool place as well. Wasabi is a fairly new sushi restaurant right at roughly Washington and Tucker. The sushi chef there is also rated to serve that potentially fatal poison blowfish
if you want to walk on the wild side. There is a Thai joint called Sen, check www.saucecafe.com for its address/website (same goes for all of these restaurants - great site).
Nightlife - if you are looking for something like the places you mentioned in KC - the ones like that downtown you will see on Sunday (Velvet, Rue 13).
Outside of downtown in that vein, in CWE I would seriously check out Drunken Fish ( www.drunken-fish.com ) and SubZero ( www.subzerovodkabar.com ) as mentioned above- seems to have a lot of the buzz in that area. Also, Cafe Eau in the Chase is sweet for a little bit more mature, diverse, and sophisticated crowd, ie early to mid-30's.
South Grand has the upstairs lounge - www.upstairslounge.com that plays house, etc..
Actually the place that came to mind is Miso - a sushi restaurant in Clayton that has a really nice vibe in the basement www.misolounge.com. Really good sushi too, IMO. My wife and I frequent there nearly every time we go for sushi.
Some cool lo-key places would be Dressel's or Tom's in CWE (both on Euclid), Kilkenny's in Clayton, or Jacque's Sports bar downtown next to Savvis center in the Sheraton(?).
Hope these suggestions help, and have a great time here!

When will you be here? Let's get together!
Don't miss Mangia Italiano on South Grand, a live blues joint in Soulard, a stroll through the CWE and Lafayette Square, lunch in the Loop, junk shopping on Cherokee Street and dinner on the Hill.

Sorry JivecitySTL, this thread was split from it's original post, which did explain they were coming to St. Louis for S.N.O.W. Festival 2005 which is held on January 16th, 2005.
- 36
I was wondering what happened to the thread, I got all confused.
Guys I would love to meet up and have you take me on a personal tour (thanks for the offer) but the woman isn't too keen on it....for some reason meeting up with city internet dorks doesn't jive with her (even though I explain that's exactly what I am
) If it was warmer out I'd be down for bumming around the city and might even be able to talk her into it but might not work out this time....getting her out in the extreme cold will be hard enough for the short walks we are taking. At least it will be warmer than than here. I'll do the self tour this time, usually break away from KC once when it gets warm and we can meet up. I'll haul the camera if it works in 5* weather.
We have free rooms at one of the new renaissance, I can't remember if it's the suites or the grand.
Oh one more thing, good sports bar to watch MU and the Rams play on Sat night...I'd like to see both games. Somewhere downtown, best sports bar. I'm thinking it might be morgan st. brewery but thought I'd check.
You guys going to SNOW on Sunday? Maybe we can randomly meet. Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't know, here's STL's weather for the weekend! BRRR.

Morgan St is okay - I try to avoid the Landing though. Jacque's Sports bar across from the Savvis in the Sheraton (I think) is very nice, big, and clean as far as sport's bars go - and it is directly in front of the Metrolink station. There are a few others scattered about - you can try any of the hotels - Pitchers at Marriot is fun sometimes. Frankly, I would stick to Jacque's or Morgan St..

good idea on the jacques...went there before a Blues game last year, it was really nice. We thought about Pitchers in the Marriott but figured it was only busy during cards games.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Jack Patricks is a fun place. It is smaller and intimate and pretty festive.
They are located directly across the street from City Grocers.

Dooleys is also a fun place:

Hard Rock's bar always has the games on.
Maggie O'Briens is fun.
2000 Market Street - near Union Station
Max and Erma's is a festive pub/eatery.
316 Market - near the arch
Maurizio's Sports Cafe' in the CBD is good
1107 Olive
Kellie O'Tooles by CBD
1401 Pine
Just a few I know. There are many others.

sweet...anybody know the SSID and if it works inside buildings? Or maybe just point me to a site so I quit bugging you guys.

I don't know if it works indoors or not, but if you are wanting to get in out of the cold, Saint Louis Bread Company located at 116 North 6th Street downtown has WIFI and is one of the largest stores in the country to be built by Panera Bread Company.

Here is your trip report....couldn't quite pick up the free downtown wifi from the room, I'd see it but it would quickly go away. Please don't take too much out of the first paragraph about the sports bars, just venting and have seen it happen everywhere.
Made it to St. Louis not much before 7 on Saturday so had to rush to find a sports bar. Decided Jacque's would be good in the newly renovated Sheraton's by Savvis. Big mistake. The front bar was full but the back wasn't so sit along side one other group, order a beer and ask the waitress about the MU game and what tv it was going to be on. Brings hot beer back in hot glass and says she's checking. Comes back and finally says when the Rams game comes on all the tvs are going to that. So I promptly ask for our bill. Manager comes over and tries to explain it, asks what channel the MU game was going to be on...i didn't know and he says "we don't get that package" so I let him know that if they would like to bill themselves as a sports bar, showing more than one sport might be good. Pay the bill, head to Union Station hoping Hooters or something has it on. No luck. Head down to Lacades to Morgan Street. Ask waitress if the MU game is on anywhere, says she will put us at a table where we can change the channel and not bother anybody else. Cool i think. Try to change the channel, can't. Bartender comes up and asks me what I need and asked if the MU game was on....nope he says, not on. Bar was empty btw, nobody watching this tv. So anyways, we order food, great food BTW, drink a few, watch the Rams game while checking MU/KSU score on cell phone. Head back to hotel since we had a very rough Friday night in KC. Get newspaper, YUP, MU game was on Fox sports midwest. A channel every single one of those sports bars got. Did NOBODY in STL care about MU? I thought STL was an MU city? I understand the Rams were in the playoffs but nobody would even try and change a tv that nobody else was watching. Very frustrating but not isolated to any one city.
Ignore all the b*tching, just had to get that off my chest. Sunday arrives, we didn't really plan to do much and way too cold to walk around downtown so we drive around looking at everything going on. The Lou really has the construction going on. In the OPO district, only that middle building will be destroyed, correct? Are there plans for the other 2? I read a STL biz. journal article that made it sound like the taller building just had a proposal...very cool news. Drove around some more, saw the new Busch stadium u/c. How exciting for you Card fans....even saw some of the red brick already going up. the loft buildup is very impressive and documented well in the real estate section of the alt. weekly (RFT??). Really like what has happened to Washington St. Ate lunch at Lucas Park Grill. Awesome place with great food. Love the mix of a small market and a great hangout place with great food. Stopped by the City Grocers just to check out selection and buy some beer. We noticed pretty reasonable prices on some stuff like fresh produce, beer, etc. but then prices almost double on stuff like canned food, etc. To be expected with the much higher overhead of an urban grocer. Happily picked up a 6pack of KC Blvd. Pale Ale and a Sunday P-D....where I read the police are maybe underreporting crimes? Watched some football from the hotel and then met some friends out at dinner in west county @ Bristol's.....which we have one in our south burbs but our friends had tons of free gift cert. there so we used them up. After that headed back downtown to S.N.O.W. what a great event. We get there early and it fills up soon after us. Very cool wandering around from place to place....expected a couple more bars and a few less restaurants/retail but loved checking them out. So weird not to see Tangerine there this year. rue13 seems very cool especially when I read they have naked sushi on Friday nights. StL definately has KC one upped on the bar scene. The washington Ave. area is unmatched for club district in KC. Tried to go to the city museum that night but driving around didn't see many people in there so decided to skip it. Home late, no I don't know how late.
Monday (today) not feeling too bad, head to the hill for Lunch at Rigazzi's....didn't think I liked this place the first time but now I can't quit going back....good cheap food is impossible to beat. Out to St. Louis Mills mall to satisfy the young lady....about a step up from the Great Mall of the Great Plains here....I actually expected it to blow about the Great Mall here but saw many of the same "$1 everything" type stores. After that took the long road west.
thanks for the cheap weekend STL....wish it would have been warmer so I could have explored more. Maybe a SNOW type thing twice a year!!! My limited pictures follow some with comments.

Love it.

Glad you had a good time. I wanted to go, but my friends were pretty tapped out from Friday and Saturday nights. The incident with the Mizzou game is kinda weird, but I think we were so wrapped up in the damn Rams game, that nobody really knew or cared about it.
As far as your first picture is concerned....To my knowledge, SBC was upgrading/replacing their heating and cooling units located on the roof of the smaller, easternmost building. There were a couple of large cranes located on the park for that. They left a couple of weeks ago; I don't know why those fences are still up.
