They have. I wish this ugly garage would simply disappear.

Maybe they could move it to the Gateway Mall.

They should have built the garage in the vacant hole that is north of the OPO. Besides, how crowded is the Renaissance Garage. Not very!

Walking down 9th street between the garage and the OPO is actually really beautiful thanks to the OPO and the old style street lights. I think once the retail space of the garage is completed and functioning that you might not even notice that there is a huge garage above it.

Your negativism is amazing! Do you ever have anything positive to say? Plus, your comment about the Renaissance Garage is totally untrue. I was a monthly parker there when it first opened and within a month there was a waiting list and I believe there still is. We're getting a Shnuck's downtown and your still brooding. Come back when you can say something positive.

He's right about building the garage on the empty parcel to the north, not sure about the Renaissance. Let's not rehash the Century debate again. All I've heard is the downtown Schnucks is a rumor.

I've heard from a developer (on a different project) that he's 95% sure they are going into the retail space in the garage. I also heard that if that happens, then City Grocers will no longer be going into the Syndicate (and hopefully will be occupied by a national retailer?).

BTW, speaking of the Renaissance garage, I noticed that there is a permit in the window of the vacant retail space adjacent to 10th Street Italian. Anyone know what's going in there?

They've been working on that for months; I've been wondering the same thing myself. Because of a total lack of buzz, I tend to think it is going to be an office associated with the immediately adjacent Renaissance garage.

I walked by today. Gateway Tower LLC, also known as the Renaissance Grand, apparently is listed on the form. So they must be doing something. I didn't see anyone inside though.

There was an article in the St. Louis Business Journal back in May about Schnucks occupying the retail space in the Century Garage and they didn't say it was going to maybe happen. Mark Schnuck heads the Desco Group that built that project. The article stated they'd hired some consultants to decide exactly what type of grocery store would work best in the building as it's considerable smaller than their normal store size. The article said they'd open in early 2008.

We don't want a normal sized store. That would imply a sea of parking.

For the record, I do think, or actually expect, that Schnucks will do that store. However, as stated ad nauseam on this forum, no one from Schnucks has ever said that they are.

And just because the Business Journal, or for that matter the P-D, says something in print, it doesn't mean that it's true, to wit:

The Business Journal, January 2006 wrote:The $300 million Bottle District planned for north of downtown will begin taking shape in March with a new name and changes to its original design.

Not necessarily. You can have the same amount of floorspace in a different design. Two floors of grocery store, accessable to pedestrians, a couple floors of a parking garage above it or below it. No need for a parking lot.

Yes we do.

Ummm.....there's a "sea" of parking above it. Perhaps you haven't noticed?

Bonwich is correct. Despite all the press in the P-D, STL Bus Journal and KMOV, there's nothing on the Schnucks website about the possible downtown store.

http://www.schnucks.com/pressreleases/

I sent an email to Schnucks a few weeks ago and they're still no-go.

Thanks so much for your message. Although there has been a lot of speculation within the media, the leaders of Schnuck Markets, Inc., have not announced plans for a downtown Schnucks store.

Our CEO, Scott Schnuck, maintains that we are always interested in opportunities to serve more St. Louis customers but there is no agreement to announce.

Thanks again for taking time to contact us.

Is the downtown St. Louis store "official" yet? The articles in the Post Dispatch and St. Louis Business Journal made it seem like the store had been announced, but your website doesn't show anything.

I'd hardly say the topic of Schnuck's not making an announcement has been discussed "ad nauseum" on this forum. It was mentioned. I first heard about them opening a store there from a reliable source back in April and mentioned in on here on May 6 as no one seemed to be talking about it.

Schnuck's may not have this on their web site yet, but I'll stand by my original comment that they're opening a store there. I guess time will tell if I'm right or not.

^ Chances are good they'll open a store under the Garage Majal, hell DESCO is Schnucks after all. If the rumors were for Dierbergs I'd be more doubtful.

Schnuck's happening is far more likely than the Bottle District. Schnuck's and DESCO are experienced. Can't say the same for the McGuire Sisters although they do have sinfully sweet voices.

I noticed Schnuck's web site has a comment at the top of their Chairman's/President's Message that says they will be making an announcement "soon" and to stop back frequently for updates. I don't know how long that message has been out there, but hopefully we'll here something about the new downtown Schnucks store soon.

Hopefully their sale of 80% of their retail space won't interfere with this development.

As the developer of all the strip malls and "plazas" schnucks inhabits they manage a significant amount of additional retail besides their stores. I would imagine the 20% they are keeping ownership of is the actual stores themselves, while divesting the smaller wing and satellite retail components. I couldn't imagine this affecting their grocery operations or practices at all.

It might end up having an effect. Schnuck's was able to pick the tenants to surround their stores as to create as much traffic as possible, as well as the right demographic. Now I'm not saying Macquarie won't do that but Schnuck's obviously loses a lot of control for kinds of businesses will surround their stores.

Maybe Macquarie can do a better job. Only time will tell.

I think the article I read mentioned that Schnuck's wanted to keep their hand in the grocery business, but I didn't take that to imply that they would keep all of them. Hopefully something on their web site will discuss this soon.

Just read in the Biz Journal that this will not affect grcery ops, but rather that DESCO is retooling their porfolio, bringing in 400 mil in cash so they can put mor emphasis on high dollar OPO like projects instead.

I'm really glad to hear that, Way! Thanks for the update! I still don't see any updates on their web site.
