Also new is Nancy's Place, a new place owned by the owner of Novak's opened just west of Taylor on Manchester.

All this to go along with new bike patrols by police in the Grove and FPSE should help the area.

Is Nancy Novak going to hold another fundraiser from the community to open another bar and then try to charge those people a cover to come in and have dinner?

A fundraiser is usually for a charity or someone in need. A bank loan is what a business owner usually does to open a business. Why is this point hard to understand??? The point is don't ask your community to give you money to open a business and then charge them a cover to come in and spend more money on food and drink.

Why would anyone (other than an investor or family member) give money to someone to open a business? That seems dumb.

Kind of sounds like a personal issue. Did you give Nancy money and now you're peeved to have to pay a cover charge? Unless people ponied up some significant cash the business will still have to make money to survive.

It is mine and many others stance. I do not know Nancy personally. I know her place is a great asset to the grove and she has a nice outdoor dining spot. I just don't agree with cover charges to eat outdoors and to have asked the community for donations to turn a profit.

Doesn't seem that hard to figure out.

At lunchtime yesterday I counted 4 different workmen in the building. Two working on the bar, one on the front door and one on a ladder working on the ceiling.

Sweet. These places are going to be fantastic when the streetscape improvements are complete. Of course we will have to wait until Spring 2011 to enjoy them!!!!

Are they going to do anything about the third floor windows and trim? Isn't this a Rothschild building that they have left in terrible shape for way too long?

^ It is a Rothschild building, though I don't think they've allowed the building to get any worse than when it was an open mexican restaurant - which wasn't all that long ago. My guess is that they're going to fix up the entire building and not just the first two floors!

I called Feraro's today. They are indeed scouting this as a third location. Right now they're looking around for alternatives. So this site is not a sure thing, but I gave my vote of confidence, especially if they deliver to Shaw and the Central West End.

Are there plans to make streetscape improvements to Manchester soon?

I drove through The Grove this weekend, and while progress has been made, especially at the eastern end of the strip, there is still lots of work left to be done. The middle of the strip was was kind of creepy, and overall, the Grove seemed pretty dark.

Yes. The money (a couple million) is in place, street lamps have been chosen (granitoid - and cobra heads will be removed) and the engineering is complete. Look for the project to get started in the next couple months and be completed by next summer. There will be new curbs, sidewalks, lamps, trees, benches etc. from Taylor to Sarah and the road will be reduced to one traffic lane in each direction with a central turn lane. Widths vary along the length of the project, but in general each sidewalk will gain 3-4 feet of width.

I have lived in the center of the Grove for a little over 2 years. It has made strides in the way of improvements but still needs more investors. The Gills are about the only real money in the area.

I was told last summer that a grant had been approved to widen the sidewalks and update the light fixtures. The approved amount was $2 million but was hinging on the completion of the the highway 40 project coming in under budget.

^ This project is independent of the new I-64. There's now nearly $3.5M. The additional $1.5M is specifically for streetlights.

This is great news. Nothing beats money in the bank. Can't wait to see it finished.

Grover, can you post a pic of the new street lights?

Two questions for Grover:

--the new Grove/FPSE park sounds exciting judging by your Tweets last night. Care to elaborate, or is the blog post almost off the printing press?

--the 4300 Manchester building (former Potter's Workshop) has some retail now. What is it? Have you been?

^ The streetlights will be very, very similar to what's in this 1957 photo of Manchester at Tower Grove. They're the "granitoid" pink-ish ones you can see throughout Forest Park and the CWE. I have not seen the light fixture for the top. I think it's a good choice considering all the factors. The cobrahead lights will be removed.

Yep - a post is on it's way....

The retail in the old Potter's Workshop is the same person who has the retail connected to Sweetie Pie's facing Tower Grove. Here's a bad cell phone pic:

The interesting thing is that there's another modern/upscale clothing store I hadn't noticed before on Manchester - don't know the name, don't have a photo, but hope to check it out soon.
