I do.

Also, Hanley is reopening this Friday afternoon and the portion of Eager between Hanley & Meridian Dr. is closing for construction of the Hanley/Eager jug-handle interchange. I'm curious to see how many commuters will change their driving patterns back to what they were prior to the construction. I can't imagine more than 65-75% of people going back to what they drove before, but thats just an uneducated guess.

^ You are making something out of a whole lot of nothing. For me, referring to the road as Highway 40 is no more than a local quirk, the same as folk in California referring to highways as " the (insert designation)" or folks in New Jersey referring to highways a "Route (insert designation)" regardless of whether the road is a state highway, US highway or interstate.

SIGNS of PROGRESS:

The exit signs that are up on I-64 through Forest Park look good! There's even some striping down!

One day I drive through the Galleria area and there's nothing but dirt east of Brentwood where the south service road is supposed to go! The next day there's CONCRETE!

Can't wait till it's all finished!

And yet, I'd trade it all for usable, organized, and extensive public transit. Why they didn't add a Metrolink line down the middle of 64 during this renovation is beyond me.

Go back and read through this thread, it is discussed ad nauseum I"m sure. If not, it's brought up several times in one of the many MetroLink threads. Also, check out old I-64 weekly chats on stltoday.com, this question is asked a couple of times each week too.

(Summarized for Brick)

No one will pay for it in the county.

People are afraid of the mixing of the general city population into the county.

StL metro does not consider the future needs of itself important enough to consider in advance.

No one will pay for it in the county.

(Summary over)

Did I leave anything out? Back to 40, 64, whatever.

Actually, it has to do with running transit down the center of a highway is not a good idea because it is not adjacent to easily walkable trip generators and the stations are located in a hostile environment. The other issue with I-64 specifically is that there is not enough right of way available without eminent domain and buyouts to construct light rail in the same ROW.

the only stop I see being real popular with ridership or the locals would be at Ballas. This could serve ast commuter rail as well as provide transportation to two very larger Hospitals in MoBap and St. John's.

Like Matt said above, the idea of rail along the highway is not ideal. Not exactly the most pedestrial friendly places.

One more: Demographics. Chesterfield doesn't need to connect to the subway. People in Frontenac don't need it. They have cars, and quite nice ones at that. Light rail especially helps those that don't have cars, nice ones or not. Very easy to say that there are more Metrolink riders who, when not on Metrolink, ride the bus than drive their Beemers.

Focus: Will the Highway be opened by Thanksgiving?

Might as well as through in the fact that the biggest concentration of jobs in the county is actually along Page Ave/Earth City. Someone had a good posts on one of these threads that showed the Daniel Boone Line going into this area.

I think so. Maybe a week after. Seems like everything is getting very close to finished. Especially between Kingshighway and Skinker where they've been planting grass and trees. Do you think they'd open it if the Clayton or Big Bend bridges weren't quite done?

PostOct 21, 2009#588

Looks like a pre-Thanksgiving opening is possible with some luck with the weather. I'll certainly be thankful!

Per Jerry Berger:

NOW, FOR THE GOOD NEWS: The reconstruction of Highway I-64 and US-40, between I-170 and Kingshighway Boulevard, is expected to be completed just before Thanksgiving, according to a reliable source with the project. The work had been slowed down by two weeks of rain. Initially, the opening was to take place on Dec. 31, but "We worked at a fast pace as a bow to businesses for holiday shopping," said our tipster.

^Woo hoo! As someone who commutes from south city to Creve Coeur this is welcome news. No more taking I-70 all the way through north county to get to work!

November 23rd should be opening day, straight from a Gateway Contractor employee's mouth. And Eager should be open tomorrow, from the same source. Both of these were said before the current deluge of rain, however..

Edit: By "tomorrow" I meant yesterday. I kept thinking yesterday was Wednesday. And the no direct access from SB Hanley to WB Eager was creating problems already...

According to weather predictions ( yeah, I know) there will be a stretch of DRY WEATHER that should allow them to get a lot done!

I drove the Eager Road underpass last night and it's WIDER than I expected it to be!

And I couldn't be MORE EXCITED about the opening of I-64! Why...I'M going to DANCE A JIG down the entire stretch of it on the day the public will have access to it before it officially opens for traffic!

Does anyone wonder why City road projects tend to take in the years when the Eager "jughandle," which included a brand new underpass and certainly some significant excavation, took only 90 days?

City bridge replacements aren't really comparable to Hanley and Eager. Different issues for construction.

The latest word on the streets is that only medians, lights and striping need to be done but they can't get it all done in 3 weeks. They were supposed to have a news conf last Friday to announce the opening date but the contractors backed down b/c they didnt know what the rain was going to do to their timing, and that there is a meeting this Thursday to determine if they will announce the date on Friday. Gateway is now saying that it will be the 2nd week of December.

Take it for what it's worth.

Hanley and Dale and Hanley and the Daniel Boone Expressway are some of the oldest intersections in the County. I have to believe that there were some significant culverts, conduits, sewers and water lines right there, many of which were at least 50-60 years old.

Don't mean to spam the good folks on this forum, but here are links to a couple posts I've done looking at the "New I-64". The first is basically I-270 to I-170 and the second is the I-170 and Hanley Road area. Next will be Big Bend to Kingshighway and a post looking at pedestrian accessibility to Forest Park including, but not limited to, I-64. Again, please feel free not to click if that is your preference (of course you won't be cool unless you do).

What'd you do / use to make the maps anyway? I'd like to make some similar for my website.
