JaredOpsal, thanks for speaking up. To her credit, Marlene Davis did reply to my e-mail, saying something about the two way conversion of 16 th street as well.

My pleasure. I think many people love the idea of converting 16th to two-way, but there is no contingency in the bill to vacate 17th referring to that.

My hope is we can at least receive a pedestrian easement on the vacated 17th.

Yeah, that site plan is pretty horrible.

^ The site plan reference appears to encompass the current building but without a new tower as being discussed. I'm I correct in that?
..
Can certainly understand the concerns, but hopefully a balance can be struck, getting the rehab underway and a new 20 residential building on Wash would be another big plus for downtown. Especially when you consider a new residential tower is being built in Clayton and Centene/Clayco proposing more but nothing has broken ground over 10 stories in either CWE or Downtown since the recession.

I'm mostly worried that they're flashing this new tower proposal to lure a favorable vote then "waiting for market conditions to improve". I don't see how the 7 parking spaces or tiny dog park improve the project so unless they plan on doing something more with the space to connect somehow to the new tower I don't see why it is necessary.

I'm not sure the street closure is a done deal, but then again, what do I know? It's a good time to keep the pressure on.

I see KMOV covered this... good job!

http://www.kmov.com/story/32168536/stre ... ly-closing

The old Simply Fondue space staring everybody in the face is a self-evident reason why closing this off to pedestrians is a bad idea.

more development is coming in this area and cutting off streets is so shortsighted... have we not learned anything in St. Louis? KEEP THE GRID!! oh, and reopen 9th street between City Garden. It's not even shown as a street now in Google Maps...

Somebody needs to ask Marlene and the developer to demonstrate how closing 17th would "improve safety and security". I'm so ***** tired of empty words.

^ The argument is that it would allow direct, gated access from parking to the apartments.

Quick update:

BB 64 to vacate and close 17th Street was moved to the "Informal Calendar" today. This means there will not be a vote to perfect the bill today as it was previously scheduled to have.

Everyone's efforts are beginning to have an effect. Thanks to everyone who is sharing their opinion with their Alderman on this issue. Please, keep it up!

To Downtown residents, the DNA St Louis is circulating a petition opposing the 17th Street closure. If you are interested in circulating one in your building et al, the link below will send you to a copy that you can print. After obtaining signatures, you can text (314-669-4534) or email (jared@saintlouisdna.org) an image/scan of the signatures that you've collected by 8pm on Wednesday,June 15.

most people at City Hall have a 1970's thought-process.. perhaps close the entire street grid in a city where 98% of people drive!

So, uh, yeah.

You know that 20-story tower replacing a surface parking lot? Apparently it was just a ploy to lure a 'national retailer'. And it didn't work so it's off the table:

http://www.stltoday.com/business/local/ ... d4cce.html
Knight said that at the request of a national retailer, he had drawn up a plan for an apartment building on the east parking lot. He said he dropped the plan when the retailer, which he did not identify, decided not to occupy the first floor of the building considered for the site.
But closing 17th street between the CPI building and the surface parking lot? Yeah, that's still on:
The Monogram’s plan calls for closure of 17th Street next to the building to provide room for a dog park and more parking for residents. Some downtown residents oppose the street closure.
:(

It's just too predictable that the 20 story building was never actually going to happen

FYI, there will be a final vote next Friday. That will be the final stand for that stretch of 17th Street.
