Metro is trialing and will likely implement a reduction of Metrolink service to have only one car:

https://cmt-stl.org/metro-transit-proposes-one-car-metrolink-trains/

Metro representatives indicated their recommended path forward would consist of a pilot where one-car consists would be deployed during peak ridership periods to ensure the data Metro has gathered is supported by operational experience. This pilot would take place in Winter 2026, and, if deemed acceptable, would lead to service changes in Spring 2027 to support the new consist model.

Seems like they could have saved tens of millions of dollars with their disaster of a gate system and just stationed a single security guard on each train.

Maybe early morning and late night would be fine, every other part of the day this would be horrific.

TBH, when they were doing this single vehicle service during Covid... I preferred it. I felt safer.

There were no car-jumpers... those people who ride the trains and hop between carriages to avoid being spotted, who are obviously up to no good... also, just the general safety in numbers aspect. When you're riding alone in a basically empty carriage... as I often found myself doing... Having more people crammed in around you makes it less likely you'll be cornered by panhandlers, solicitors or those once in a while one-offs where people approach you with weird energy/force you against your will to engage into unconsented conversation.

One thing I learned riding these trains, sitting alone in a vacant part of the cars makes you a big ol bullseye target for all sorts of unwelcome engagement. Straight up, people will mess with you for the sake of messing with you, to get a reaction. A lot of head games being played... and I'm all bruh... I just want to f*ckin get from A to B without any issue.

Well it's 2026, they spent $60M on fare gates and a new payment system, and ridership is higher than it was in 2020-2021. The rider experience will be absolutely terrible from about 8 AM to 6 PM.

They could have purchased pass-through cars when they were getting new Metrolink trains, but they chose not to.

And supposedly the fare gates were going to stop all this nonsense. Of course, we knew it wouldn't (and so did the consultants who told them so), but this is just tacitly admitting it was a giant waste of money.

What in the world? They already trialed this a few years ago and as far as I could tell it didn't work and they started up with 2 cars again. Its also going to be a huge impediment for bicyclists taking their bikes on metrolink.

Can never trust metro to make things bettee

There is a survey you can take about this idea in the link above - make your voice heard

This is a dumb idea and once again makes the system worse in service of people who likely won't ever ride metrolink

What I can't stand about CMT is that they pretend to be advocates for both transit and passengers:

We don’t own or operate the transit system, but we work to champion it, challenge it, encourage it and advocate for it.
..yet I've never once seen them challenge a Metro decision or present passenger concerns directly to Metro as a passenger advocate. They're just like the public relations arm of Metro, acting as a one-way broadcast of whatever Metro says or does. I don't understand their point.

I joined as a member one year, just to see what would happen. Literally.... nothing, zip, zero, zilch... the whole year. Until I got a renewal notice. It's a joke and is a non-thing. Honestly, they need to be audited.

I was shocked they wrote a letter to Bistate opposing this change and have made several social media posts opposing it. I literally thought they were only a fake PR arm so I never knew they might push back on anything.
