Saw they're still selling their west county property - maybe a needed step before construction begins? This site in particular isn't a big deal, but I wish demo permits were only ever issues alongside building permits.
The site is now fenced, and grading and digging for the underground garage is underway. I'm not particularly concerned about the lack of a building permit yet.
Mayor Slay tweeted this out earlier today:
I think this is a good sign that this project is going forward despite the building permit not yet being issued.Delighted to have joined with Tri Star this morning for the ground breaking of its new Mercedes dealership the city. #fgs

^ Guessing he wrote exactly what he wanted to. Announcing new Mercedes dealership in the Cheltenham neighborhood probably doesn't garner the same media attention. That said, the PR almost couldn't be more wrong.
Based on the website it looks to be a small one-man PR firm.Alex Ihnen wrote:^ Guessing he wrote exactly what he wanted to. Announcing new Mercedes dealership in the Cheltenham neighborhood probably doesn't garner the same media attention. That said, the PR almost couldn't be more wrong.
Who wants to send him a kindly worded email along with a map of St. Louis?
Tri-Star Imports: Breaks Ground on New Facility in Downtown Cheltenham
Now at least people will know where it is.wabash wrote:Tri-Star Imports: Breaks Ground on New Facility in Downtown Dogtown East.
I guess you can't blame him when not wanting to tell people they're breaking ground for a luxury car dealership in/close to Dogtown.
Pedestrian: "Hey, where'd you get that nice new Mercedes?"
Benz Owner: "Over in Downtown Dogtown East, in the Greater Zoo area."

I would actually be satisfied if my friend from Festus would start calling ONLY things east of Skinker downtown. Currently he says anything east of Brentwood Blvd is downtown. It's very annoying.moorlander wrote:Didn't you know everything "east of skinker" IS downtown!

Construction update: Excavation for the garage is well underway. The garage will be a level below Hampton and accessed from Oakview. From Hampton, the roof of the garage will look more like a parking lot.

I still can't figure why Tri-Star didn't just buy the Hardees and go all the way up to Oakland. I guess if they're spending the money to build underground parking, Hardees must have wanted stupid money in order to leave.Presbyterian wrote:Construction update: Excavation for the garage is well underway. That area is going to look completely different specially when the hospital is gone and the zoo begins to have definite design on how they'll expand. I think im going to like this new little glass building for Mercedes-Benz

So far, so good! Nothing like a Mercedes-Benz dealership to class up a corner of Cheltenham...er...Dogtown...or whatever we want to call that area once this dealership is complete, the zoo expands, etc.
Honda of Frontenac is storing like 60 new cars on the old lumber yard lot in the heart of Dogtown. Maybe they'll build a full dealership and Hampton Ave will become the city's new auto row?threeonefour wrote:So far, so good! I'm glad they're not gonna park a bunch of cars on the front sidewalk, like all those places on Kingshighway do.
^ Framer, Maplewood stepped up its game and actually encouraged the car lot to go next to the metrolink station. Front facing car lot with probably the worst type of land use you can possibly have next to a transit station. OK, maybe a bit strong but I don't think their was an ounce of effort on part of the city to encourage something better. Then again, the idea progress is to trade in a car lot for a drug store on one corner and a quick trip next to the high school on the other corner as the gateway to their downtown.
