Are the developers allowed to take down the "Ludwig Lofts" sign? I thought the historic tax credits dictated restrictions against altering the historic facade and we all know that sign has been there a long time.

I love the building next to it. It's not the most architecturally intriguing, but it's just a neat looking building, especially when cleaned up. I even like the pinkish look.

I'd like to see the detailing of the ludwig building brought out a little more.

^ Agreed, the building to the right utilizes classic symmetry and exudes simple elegance. The street-level facade is kind of wack, however.

Wiggity Wack.

Seriously, don't you guys think the facade looks half-assed with that busted pediment? It is unfathomable that they wouldn't fix it, unless it was removed for/by "historic" forces (tornado, gunfire, George Washington, something having to do with the World's Fair, the Noid, Vervus Jones etc) and thus is an integral part of the bulding's historicity.

The building to the right is great - though they should strip the panels off the facade. And yes, the "busted" pediment looks rough, but I wonder what was once there? A big sign perhaps? It doesn't necessarily look like it was ever complete - it look like it would have covered a good portion of the center window . . .

I just looked closely. It is brick, but there is significant terra-cotta paneling in addition to the ornamentation. The facade does look like it is painted red, but it doesn't look new at all. Up close, the paint looks worn in some places and has lots of debris (bird sh*t, drips of other paint, pollution etc) on it. The pediment absolutely was complete originally, no doubt in my mind.

The pediment was never complete...it held the original large ludwig aeolian sign...if you look closely, if the pediment were complete, it would block windows...

Ahh, ok, I'll buy the sign answer. But I still think it looks like sh*t. Put up a new sign there or something. It is very distracting as is.

Who ever posted the first picture... he either photoshopped it, purposely over exposed it, or has a bad monitor.

Here is what the building looks like.

Well it seemed like you caused a stir making everyone believe it was Uber red. Give some warning! I too thought i was going to look at a blood red building.

the original picture edited only for size.

Don't make an issue out of something so trivial.

There will be a sign going back into that void. Dunno what it will look like yet...they definitely will have to put a lot of thought into it, cuz a sign that big could really make or break the facade of this building. It would be nice it they could design the sign to complete the pediment in some fashion - or at least the outline of the pediment so it doesn't completely block the windows.

do we have any pics of this building before the pediment was partially removed?

What's the story behind the unfinished pediment?

The building to right looks very nice. What building is that? any tenants lined up? residential or commercial?

If I am not mistaken, the building to the "right" is part of Ludwig.

An older picture from Built St. Louis, but still post-sign removal. The building was definitely painted the current color:

You are not mistaken. Meaning, of course, that it is part of the same project, not the same building.

You are most DEFINITELY MISTAKEN!!! The building was stripped down to it's original materials. Previously the facade was painted to look like stone! Please come downtown and see for yourself. Loftworks is going to replace the original sign where the partial pediments is. The sign will be up in a few months. Wait until you see the former Ludwig showroom in all it's original plaster glory...it will make a great bridal showroom.

^Yeah, you can tell from that picture that it was painted grey. The paint is peeling like crazy.

BTW, can you describe the original sign? Oh, yeah, and if anyone has a picture that would work too. :)

Thanks for the clarification - didn't realize the picture above was after modifications were made. Can't wait to see the finished product!

There are workmen polishing the black granite on the first floor facade. It is starting to look really nice.
