I went down to the cast iron today and found that there are end pieces and a large centerpiece in addition to 3 columns and beams to hold them up. Some will need to be recreated if they are to be used again. From some of my conversations with people, they didn't even know that the cast iron was there until some lawn care people weed whacked some of the weeds away. They, of which there are 3, say that they have been in contact with some developers who have been looking at the Landing are wanting to do something unique. For now, yes, they are too heavy to remove without heavy machinery and a ruckus to get them out of there. They'll be there for a little while longer. Also discovered today, but more obvious, are 3 footings where these cast iron decorations would've sat. These are 1st and Lucas where the 2-floor building used to sit.

I wonder if GRG is willing to sell that lot, where the Garden would go, and take up the site just East of here, where the cast iron pile is. That way you can keep development of new buildings closer to the main streets of 1st and 2nd and green space closer to the River since no buildings could be built there without becoming flooded.

I believe the building has a fair amount of vacancy right now.
So... anyone know what happened to this?

Which makes the most logical sense.  Does anyone on here have the ear of GRG? I've tried emailing before and gotten nothing in response on this specific matter.  Sounds like they've got blinders on with this project.

That's interesting. Based on the review of these guys, this potentially gives us clues to why it closed.

Mr. Sonnenschein undoubtedly means well, but he needs to give up once and for all. Every location he's had has been the same mess. I'm afraid he's just not up to the task.

Not sure if their is anything new in bizjournals article on the landing.   I would assume Drury family is in the driver seat with the ownership of the prime infill lots along Lucas Ave that are above the flood zone.

Moments after officials cut the celebratory ribbon for the Lucas Avenue extension, a half-dozen vehicles waited for the pedestrians to disperse before zooming up the new artery from Laclede's Landing.
It was the first time any vehicular traffic has been able to exit or enter the southern end of the riverfront neighborhood, which has long been impacted by a lack of access to the rest of downtown St. Louis.
The opening of the Lucas Avenue extension on Monday follows months of construction — and years of planning — to improve the riverfront neighborhood's accessibility.
"I know it was frustrating at times, but we got it done," Alderman Jack Coatar said.
City officials last year struck a deal with Drury Development Co. to use some of the surface lot it owns to extend Lucas Avenue to Second Street by offering the St. Louis company tax abatement for its Witte Building redevelopment. About $400,000 was available from a mix of local and state funds to pay for the project. SBC Contracting Inc. was the general contractor for the infrastructure improvement.
"This opens the door for more investment," said Steven Conway, chief of staff for Mayor Lyda Krewson, referencing the more $20 million in investment that Laclede's Landing has seen since in the past few years.

The neighborhood's second-largest employer, Abstrakt Marketing, plans to grow its employee base from about 330 people to 1,000 employees in the coming years. It believes Laclede's Landing can once again be a destination, said CEO Scott Scully.
Up next for the neighborhood is work on the eastern half of Lucas Avenue to make it more accessible for drivers and pedestrians. That is expected to begin in about three weeks, Coatar said. The Seventh Ward Capital Fund is paying for that project. Security will also be improved with plans to add cameras, he said.
Also planned for the neighborhood is the Katherine Ward Burg Garden, a new half-acre park that's part of Great Rivers Greenway's master plan to improve the North Riverfront area. Construction is slated to begin at the end of this month and should be complete by spring 2020, said Great Rivers Greenway CEO Susan Trautman.

^Thanks,  That would be pretty impressive if Abstrakt can grow to 1000 employees on Landing and for downtown for that fact.  That is what it will take

Driver seat - yes, but they’re currently waiting at an airport parking lot with the car turned off. It’ll take a while before they decide to actual drive anywhere.

great analogy.

Maybe Abstrack Marketing needing office space sooner than later might spur something for Landing.  Not sure if it will be Drury but I'm also wondering if the car is turned off because it has two flat tires and only one spare in the trunk.

IMO the next year of construction in the Landing is already really exciting.
  • Stopped by the new Lucas Ave extension yesterday and it was already being heavily utilized by traffic and pedestrians. Such an obvious move, but still a problem that I thought would never be fixed. Good job city.
  • Paved E/W streets is a smart move and makes the Landing a bit more approachable. Those things are terrible right now.
  • The Burg Garden, while hotly contested here, will still be a vast improvement over the current state of affairs on the lot.
  • Not to mention the gated surface parking lot that has replaced the empty green lot across Lucas for the Pepper Lofts. Not ideal, but it is at least using the land better than the empty lawn covered in trash.
  • The Greely and Hoffman building revamps will soon be underway. I look forward to seeing their storefronts activated again.
Probably more but I have to go to work. It's nice to see things really start happening down there.

Lots of good stuff.  Not a huge fan of the Berg Garden, but GRG does good work and provided they can actually find the money to extend garden and landscaping work down to the NRF trail I think it'll be a nice fit.

Really hope all this activity has Drury thinking about their plans again...new construction would be a huge win for the Landing.

If anyone is around the Landing sometime and wouldn't mind snapping a few pics of the new street and other improvements, I'd love to see it.

A small tower with parking in that big empty lot sure would do it wouldn't it? So much promise right there.

I move to St. Louis later this month, and I plan to do some exploring the day I get there (because my wife and kiddo come up a week later). I plan to walk across Eads and snap some photos of the area. I haven't been to the revamped Arch grounds yet, despite several visits to the city since its completion.

Congrats!  And yeah once you get settled and can do some exploring, I look forward to seeing what you got.  I'm actually looking forward to getting back to STL and getting the camera out myself.  Been recycling some old pics on Insta lately and need to get some new material haha.  Good luck with the move!

The park wouldn't be an issue at all if they just moved it to the next lot east, right next to the trestle.

Much more prone to flooding, thus real development probably wouldn't happen there.  They're basically wasting a usable plot of land on a flat of (probably) underutilized cement that could withstand flooding and be cleaned up easily.  I think it'd be a nice amenity for future residents, especially if it included a dog park or the like.  But I think it's pretty shortsighted and lazy to just plop this down on a much more valuable lot, especially when the whole purpose of this park is for river views.  Why move it farther away?

Ugh, whatever.

Looks like the lights are now gone on the north side and the street has been widened.

Here's Google Street View from 2018.

That is literally, a one person wide sidewalk.  What was the value of widening the road by like, what, 3 feet? And less light on the streets? How does that make it safer for pedestrians as a whole in a walkable district? Sheesh.
