What the...you mean it's open Southbound? Best news I've heard all day.

Yes, it is open southbound. I used it over the weekend.

I'm really happy with the way this turned out - love the design. The lighting, plantings/planter boxes and pavers all look great. It's like something out of Dwell Magazine.

All of the trees look great as well. About the only thing left is the bricks on the planters.

After finally getting Grand Ave. back as a north/south route, we get another one taken away from us as MODOT replaces the Jefferson Ave. bridge over I-64.

http://www.modot.org/stlouis/major_proj ... cement.htm

I know this sort of stuff needs to be done, but it stinks that project couldn't have been at the same time as the Jefferson Ave replacement over the railroad lines a few years ago. And now we go back to having more traffic shunted back to Compton and 18th.

The bridge will also be widened to accommodate traffic for a future construction project that will make Jefferson Avenue a full interchange.

If that means a full interchange because the whole 20th/Chestnut cr*p/hole gets taken out: then "hell yeah!".

This makes me all the more excited that the law school is moving downtown, where I live.

The re-construction of the Jefferson Bridge along with all the others was originally planned and designed during the I-64 re-construction days so I wouldn't jump to conclusions with big name retailers or the such. This reconstruction was originally scheduled to have been completed over a year ago.

Though, MoDOT has designed the new Jefferson Bridge to be expanded into a full interchange/work in conjunction with new 22nd Street Interchange in the future, so they are thinking ahead to whatever does happen...

True. But it still grinds my gears this couldn't have been done during the I-64 rebuild or during the Jefferson railroad overpass project.

I guess it came down to a lack of money and the city/MODOT not working together.

The I-64 reconstruction project ended way before Jefferson-from my recollection it ended/started between Kingshighway and Taylor. It was not feasible for MoDOT to extend the large reconstruction project further into Downtown, nonetheless close an important artery through the City.

I know that; I was just talking about the timing.

And MODOT doesn't seem to have a problem closing an important artery. I remember when the closing of a highway used to be a big deal: now it's a common occurrence. Then again that's the new normal due to America's crumbling infrastructure.

I’ll take it. Looks to be a great improvement for downtown west area and beyond.

Urbanreviewstl posted a couple of pictures on Instragram the other day showing the Jefferson Viaduct medians being dug up and cut out. Anyone know what’s up?

Protected cycle track coming as part of the 20th/21st project? Or just rebuilding the medians along with the rest of the Jefferson project?

I am beyond excited for this connection to open. I will actually use this to get to City matches. Hopefully when the old Mack dealership gets redeveloped they will extend the protected bike path another block south to LaSalle.

Saw this on Reddit:

A new center median will be built with a protected cycle track on the east side of the bridge.
