Seeing John Auble hunched over always cracks me up.

In addition to the loss of the Union Pacific and AT&T jobs that Dweebe mentioned, the large, art deco-y office building right across the street from 2 Cents Plain has been vacant for some time, and I believe the upper floors of the Maurizio's building are vacant as well. That side of the street could really use some life.

I'm a big fan myself. I actually tried to be him for Halloween last year at a party. Everybody thought I was Inspector Gadget though--no one seemed to know who Auble was. Savages.

I like Auble's book on St. Louis gangsters. It seriously could have been written (not researched, but written) by a retarded nine-year-old. One of the most astonishingly poorly written things I have ever seen published; it is absolutely full of spelling errors and the grammar is experimental at best.

I know we have went a bit off topic, but from page 1;

where he has been known to dismiss a customer who doesn't want his soup: "To hell with you, cheapskate."

If he keeps that attitude, he might have to close do----oh, right.

I wish there were a good deli downtown. The closest thing to good corned beef is Teutenbergs, but the people there are so fawningly attentive that I can rarely stand to set foot in the place. Anybody got a better idea for a real deli downtown (along the line of a protzels)? If I am right and one doesn't exist, that is a major hole in the lunch market and needs to be exploited.

Steve, for John Auble, you have to do the impression Darryl Hammond does of Tom Brokah, with marbles in your mouth.

Good to see 2 cents Plain being remade into something cool. I look forward to it opening.

This is the owner of 2 cents plain(the concert venue). I am co-owning the business with my brother. Neither one of us are in the band Jumbling Towers. Our booking Agent, Nate Drexler, is. 2 Cents Plain will be open mid-september. If you want more information you can contact me here, or on our myspace page. www.myspace.com/2centsplain Come down anytime you like, we've got great drink prices and an awesome line up of bands. I can't wait to see everyone and enjoy the show.

You can also come see them play at The Lot tomorrow, at the Schlafly Tap Room.

Hey, there's always Beffa's - I've had some great corned beef there.

Oh. Never mind.

Everyone knows that Jack's brother owns Carl's Deli on Clayton Rd. near Kaldi's and Wash. U., right?

Closed already?

I noticed both a for sale sign, and what looked like a for lease sign on the front facade. And the place was dark. On a Friday night.

Yep, they closed in September. This is what A to Z (RFT) had to say:

Downtown music venue 2 Cents Plain is closed -- effective immediately.

According to co-owner Brandon Cullum, "we've been in a big legal fight with our landlord for awhile now -- and he won."

Cullum says that the national shows scheduled at the venue will be moved to other venues; some of the local shows may have to be cancelled, however.

As for future plans for the venue, Cullum says 2 Cents "might relocate. It just depends on if we can find the right space and the right location. We'd like to relocate; that would be nice."

Given the nature of commercial rentals, I'm going to guess that the "legal fight" with the landlord meant that the landlord wanted to be paid rent, and 2 Cents Plain wasn't paying rent.

A search of Missouri court records turns up nothing filed against either owner or the business name, though, so who knows the real reason.

Translation: We were behind on the rent and the owner wanted to be paid.

I still crave their meat knish and crunchy sauerkraut with a Dr. Brown Cream soda. It was our special treat whenever we were in the area.  No one makes a knish like his!
